What do you wear for running if you are not leggings material?

Debating starting to learn to run.... I've been given a pessary for prolapse and told that I can run with it in.... I need to try because of recovery from an injury.... I have never run before! What do you wear? I am not a leggings person and need something that won't be too rough on a scar.
What do you use to carry a phone and keys with you?

And what do I need to consider when buying shoes? Or will any type of trainers do?

I've never worn leggings in my life (thanks to lipoedema and fat knees, cankles and shins...yes, shins!). Always very envious of large women who can just get away with leggings and a floaty tunic.
Anyway, for the gym and running I just wear Sports Direct's cheapest joggers, they look ok. I have a stretchy lycra band for running, which i wear under my t-shirt and contains keys and phone.

[quote MikeUniformMike]Tracksters. Not sexy but very practical.

Ron Hills for me too.

High waisted leggings with a tight stretchy top in top and then a t-shirt in top of that. Leggings are the best for running. The stretchy top I wear is from prinarks shapewear range, although sadly they don't sell it anymore. I wear that because I have a B belly and I hate to hear the two bits of my belly slap together 😳 so it really squashes everything in.

MikeUniformMike · 31/08/2020 07:30

@DianasLasso, thanks. I'll also wear shorts but was never a fan of wearing running tights. The tracksters are great because they are not tight, wash easily, have a pocket, and can be worn over shorts to keep warm pre and post races.

@ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords, Mine grew a full size over a year and a half of serious running, and yes to going up a half size.
Feet often get longer when a woman is pregnant too.

MikeUniformMike · 31/08/2020 07:46

@ProLapsedExerciser, if you are not sure if you'll stick to running, get fairly cheap ones. Look online for neutral ones (unless you know that you under or over pronate) and look for ones that are in the sale because they are maybe a year or two out of date. By cheap, I mean decent brand but half-price. Try not to wear them for anything other than running.

Get your gait analysed when you have an established gait.

Your feet might not get longer but mine did, but I was doing some serious mileage.

Running bras are a bit uncomfortable but any jiggle might cause jogger's nipple.

I just wanted to share my experience. After ds2, I had a prolapse. I was scheduled for surgery which I then cancelled as had no way of doing the rest period. I started running during lockdown and now do 30 mins every other day. My prolapse has improved so much! I can barely feel it now.

MikeUniformMike · 31/08/2020 07:59

That's great news @CostaCosta

minnieok · 31/08/2020 08:04

I have leggings (just sports direct) with a pocket that fits my phone and door key. I wear a tunic top that covers my mid thighs over my sports bra and tight running top (to stop the wobble). Do couch to 5k to start with and try not to worry, once Parkrun returns I highly recommend, all shapes and sizes, I'm literally in the last 20 or so, but there's always walkers behind (just)

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 31/08/2020 08:06

Decathlon own brand trainers are good and reasonably priced too.

I have an expensive pair of fitted OCs too and often choose my cheap decathlon’s over them. And yes go a size or a half up as your feet swell when you run.

minnieok · 31/08/2020 08:09

Ps don't be tempted to buy cheap trainers - buy ones designed for running. Major high street sellers have a lot of fashion trainers so ensure you get a member of staff who knows the stock well or go to a specialist running store

fellrunner85 · 31/08/2020 23:20

First, shoes! Buy proper running shoes from sportsshoes.com where they have previous year's models on sale - look for Nike Pegasus; Brooks Ghost or Ravenna or Saucony Triumph for good quality, all-round neutral cushioned shoes.

Dunno what "not a leggings person" means, but comfort will be the most important thing. When I started running, I ran in huge thick tracky bottoms and a cotton oversized t shirt. That didn't last long as I quickly realised they became heavy and wet.
Now I tend to run in teeny tiny shorts (with a pocket, always with a pocket) and a racerback vest. I'm still not a "leggings person" in real life but, when running, being cool and comfortable is more important Smile
Would highly recommend Decathlon for cheap yet high quality kit.

AuntieStella · 31/08/2020 23:33

try the Nike Vomero - also neutral sole and usually cheaper than the Pegasus. A good entry level shoe (despite dreadful name)

Also look on Wiggle - they have a lot of old model ASICs at very low prices. Plus they do their own brand (dhb) - I've never tried the trainers, but they're generally sound and I think would be suitable to start with.

Do go up half to one full size

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 01/09/2020 07:16

@fellrunner85 - that trainer link is great. Many thanks. Have just splashed out on a new pair of trainers and saved £40 in the process. I’m not worried about last years colours... it’s the shoe that matters.

Harriedharriet · 01/09/2020 07:49

@Rainyday26

If you’re thinking about starting Couch to 5k ..well done it’s a great programme , just believe in in and don’t over think runs, otherwise you’ll be defeated before you start. I help run C25k programmes for our running club and my recommendation would be to do say 4 weeks of C25k before you start looking at new trainers. This is because you’ll need to develop your own, comfortable running style and in the first few weeks you’ll be a bit all over the place ! (In the nicest possible way).. To start with If you have old or cheap trainers they’ll be fine. Any old sports clothes will also do, however as others have said Lycra (Preferably running) leggings really are the most comfortable as they will have nice flat seams and wick away sweat. A baggy tshirt and layers are also good as you may get hot.

Once you get to week 4 you are a runner and know you’ll stick with it so it feels great to reward yourself with new trainers, preferably fitted in a running shop that does gait analysis.

Oh ..and just remember...slow down 😀

Rainy - what do you mean re running styles? And what do you mean by Slow Down? And finally (!) where do you get C25k? Although I will google that...
IvanTheDragon · 01/09/2020 07:53

I’m quite jiggly and prefer cycling shorts, but for some reason can’t get on with running leggings - the right size for one bit of me is wrong for another bit I think. In the winter I tend to wear men’s three-quarter length loose running shorts (come to just below the knee, some have mesh inside) and religiously apply Lanacane from boots - it’s an anti-chafing gel and it works wonders, you only need a little bit.

MikeUniformMike · 01/09/2020 09:17

@Harriedharriet, sorry to butt in but I think she means what sort of pace and how your feet strike the ground.

Slow down - go at a much slower pace. You should be able to talk as you run (probably not at first), so when you set off take it really steady.
If you set off at a running pace, you'll get out of breath and probably feel a bit demoralised, so if you go really slow you'll go further.

Try jogging at a walking pace but don't stop to walk.
It is really difficult when you start but progress is quick.
You might feel a bit of a wally at first but everyone starts somewhere.

Couch 2 5K is a plan for going from no running to being able to run 5 kilometers. There are probably a few plans around but here's a link
www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/

You may or may not lose weight, but you'll probably find that your posture is better, your skin is softer, you feel less stressed and things.

MikeUniformMike · 01/09/2020 09:19

The advice I gave might be different from what the app advises, but it is what works for me, and I never run with headphones or anything.

christinarossetti19 · 01/09/2020 09:24

I know so many people who started running with C2 5k and have never looked back. It's free and easy to download.

Leggings are the best thing for running if you're not ready for shorts. The 3/4 ones are good, and you can get plenty with a pocket for keys and phone.

Also a sports type top. Cotton t-shirts get hot and uncomfortable quickly.

Try TKMax. Sports direct for or JD for cheap and cheerful things to start out with.

Spanielmadness · 01/09/2020 09:31

I get so hot running I can only wear leggings if it’s around 0C or colder. Otherwise it’s shorts all the way......

Thank you Mike! Starting today....
