What do you wear for running if you are not leggings material?

Debating starting to learn to run.... I've been given a pessary for prolapse and told that I can run with it in.... I need to try because of recovery from an injury.... I have never run before! What do you wear? I am not a leggings person and need something that won't be too rough on a scar.
What do you use to carry a phone and keys with you?

And what do I need to consider when buying shoes? Or will any type of trainers do?

Leggings or cycling shorts type things with rugby shorts over the top. I wear a running belt.

Leggings with a top long enough to cover the bum. I wear a bumbag as I seemingly lack the ability to affix those phone strap things onto my arm.
The best trainers I've found for me personally are Hoke's as they're cushioney.

Trail running shorts. There’s some women’s ones from decathlon that have pockets. And they’re not too short like some women’s shorts. Mid thigh.

I used to wear sweatpants that had a tie at the waist that I could tighten, but now I wear leggings. I'm short, so their past my waist, but they're actually very comfortable and supportive, like a sports bra for my tummy Blush
How high up is the scarring?
I don't take a phone, I use iPod shuffle, which is small and clips to my clothes. My keys, I took the Yale key off the ring and put it into a pocket in the outside of my leggings, but you could also put it on a band round your wrist (they sell them in running gear shops, so they are a thing).
A good sports bra is a must, otherwise you could damage your breast tissue, even if a very slow jog.

I’m not a leggings person for everyday clothes, but wear them for running. Though I’m still in shorts at the moment as it’s warm.

You need proper running leggings not fashion ones.

Leggings are by far the best running gear. They reduce friction between bits of you, hold you snug and make you look better than expected.

Men's shorts I find comfortable and I feel much less self conscious than in leggings and much cooler

Leggings are the best though. They will hold you in and stop your belly jiggling and often have pockets for your phone and keys.
I used to wear a long top to cover my bum when I was more self conscious.

Have you been specifically told to run? It's not something that would usually be recommended as something new to take up with a prolapse.
Yes, and jump and squat/lunge with weights....

A good pair of running leggings hold you in so well honest! Id suggest a drawstring waist, makes all the difference, and you can get different cuts to suit your preference (high waisted or low etc) but once you find the right pair, you will be off! I didn't realise how well mine held me in til I moved to my shorts in the hot weather and wobbled everywhere Blush I'm yet to find the right shorts for me!

I’m not a leggings person at all day to day but I run in leggings. I wear nike leggings and I have a running belt for phone and keys.

there are these things called jogging bottoms, funny enough. Can get 1/2 or 3/4 length versions. In summer I wear men's shorts. My neighbour used to run a daily mile in jeans.

I didn't look good in leggings at first, but for keeping friction at bay, they are needed. I did try just joggers but they aren't the same. I have various pairs, not expensive at all. I got some from Decathlon recently that have a zip pocket in the back, just big enough for my phone and a key, but I also have a waist belt. I find an adjustable belt is better. I buy t-shirts and vests in the next size up as I like them baggy.
Trainers, see if you have a shop that will look at your gait. Clothing you can spend peanuts on, but you need foot support and also double layered running socks to prevent blisters. I like 1000 Mile socks and have also recently discovered Runderwear.

I like leggings for running, definitely avoid cotton, it's cold and miserable when you sweat. Aesthetics can piss off, it's all about the functionality and leggings in technical fabric are more comfortable than anything else! Can chuck a skirt, baggy shorts or long top on if you must.

I do need leggings or long (men's length) cycling shorts to avoid vicious chafing.

If you have a scar in the belt type region you can carry stuff in a hydration vest like this

I've had to resort to this as I had my appendix out a few weeks ago. Massive overkill really but my phone is too big for my leggings pocket and I need to be contactable if I'm running when DH is on call... It's pretty comfortable but measure for size. I'm a 28KK and the straps sit above and below my boobs (just,) and are just about long enough!

If you’re thinking about starting Couch to 5k ..well done it’s a great programme , just believe in in and don’t over think runs, otherwise you’ll be defeated before you start. I help run C25k programmes for our running club and my recommendation would be to do say 4 weeks of C25k before you start looking at new trainers. This is because you’ll need to develop your own, comfortable running style and in the first few weeks you’ll be a bit all over the place ! (In the nicest possible way).. To start with If you have old or cheap trainers they’ll be fine. Any old sports clothes will also do, however as others have said Lycra (Preferably running) leggings really are the most comfortable as they will have nice flat seams and wick away sweat. A baggy tshirt and layers are also good as you may get hot.

Once you get to week 4 you are a runner and know you’ll stick with it so it feels great to reward yourself with new trainers, preferably fitted in a running shop that does gait analysis.

Oh ..and just remember...slow down 😀

Just don't wear cotton leggings or yoga pants if it is raining.

You won't need the gait analysis until you have been running for a while.
Start off gently at a pace that is about as fast as your walking pace and try not to stop. People suggest run-walk but it didn't work for me.

Start of with tiny goals. Run very slowly to a fairly close landmark, and if you can, 'run' back. If you can't run, walk.

When I first started running, I wore a proper high impact bra, some cotton rugby-style shorts from a supermarket and cotton t-shirt and my trainers, which happened to be running shoes.

After a few weeks I invested in a running jacket and tracksters.

The shoes were fine but the running made my feet bigger so after about 3 months I got new shoes.

Any baggy t-shirt and short or leggings will do for the first few weeks, just don't skimp on the bra.

Noooo! I did not want to hear that! My feet are too large already! I don't have any trainers, so will need to get some. Thank you for all the tips.

I've never heard anyone say running makes your feet bigger, but it is very common to wear a size bigger than usual in running shoes.
