Can anyone recommend fat burning exercise for someone with bad joints?

I started Joe Wicks in lockdown and my knees started to suffer. Stopped lunges and that helped a bit.

Moved on to LMOD and the first body combat left my shoulder sore for three weeks and counting.

Pump is running heavy which also aggravated knees Sad

Did CXworx last week and my knee is still in pain from side lunges.

Meanwhile I'm piling on weight again and losing all the muscle tone I had built up.

Would really appreciate any suggestions 😭

Someone I know runs Pilates classes with an emphasis on mobility - since lockdown they've been online so you could access them from wherever. Might be worth checking out? www.mobilates.co.uk/

(No idea how much fat you'd burn but it might be helpful anyway just to keep moving!)

Palavah · 26/08/2020 07:29

Flow yoga, pilates and barre will all help.

JadesRollerDisco · 26/08/2020 09:11

You can do most things so long as you modify them a bit. I had some Davina DVDS where they had one person doing the exercise, and Another doing a lower intensity version for people with joint issues etc. It really helped me increase my joint strength, because instead of over doing it I was building it up. I was also doing swimming, Pilates and lots of walking, and some gentle yoga, which all helped support my body.

Ketosis is your perfect day burning exercise. Requires no energy outlet and will have a very positive effect on your joint pain.

*fat

picklemewalnuts · 26/08/2020 09:14

Tai chi is surprisingly arduous. No risk of injury. It doesn't look like you are doing a lot, but you are.

MsMartini · 26/08/2020 09:21

I'd get some advice. Strength training can help support joints but you need to know what the issue is to do it safely.

endofthelinefinally · 26/08/2020 09:21

Following with interest. I suffer from very painful joints and poor mobility. On long term steroids, so also have severe osteoporosis. I have been low carbing for months and have managed to lose a bit of weight, but every time I have attempted any exercise apart from gentle walking, I end up in worse pain. Lock down hasn't helped.
I will take a look at the pilates site.
OP I really sympathise.

How about an exercise bike?

joeysapple · 26/08/2020 13:44

Will try body balance for a while, which I think is a mix of yoga, Pilates and tai chi. It just doesn't feel like it's doing much compared to Body Attack etc. But like you say, better than nothing.

I think a bike might work well for cardio that's gentle on joints but my house is tiny and I just don't have anywhere to put an exercise bike (or even for storing a real bike!).

What about swimming now that a lot of the pools are opening up again? It helps take the pressure off your joints.

emmathedilemma · 26/08/2020 17:22

There's no running around in Body Pump?
If your knees hurt it could be down to your trainers or even technique. I have flat feet so wear arch support orthotics and if i don't my knees hurt as my feet and ankles roll inwards when I exercise. I have to be really careful with form doing squats and lunges.
Body balance is low impact, there's no jumping around. Cycling or cross trainer would be your best forms of cardio.

doadeer · 26/08/2020 17:28

Vinyasa Yoga has lots of lunges and can be hard on knees so I'd avoid that. Pilates is mainly mat based so lots lying down. Could you cycle on a bike? Swim?

What is the source of your joint pain?

roundandsideways · 26/08/2020 21:33

One of the most under rated type of exercise is just walking. You can go at your own pace, and it's free, although it is time consuming.

imnottoofussed · 26/08/2020 22:20

Definitely no running in body pump. I attended physical classes weekly for about six months and never moved from the same spot Grin

thenightsky · 26/08/2020 22:24

I'm in the same situation OP. Used to be a long distance runner years ago, then arthritis set in. Total hip replacement last October. Started back running in Feb. Did well till I hurt my knee (damaged cartilage) at beginning of May. Started back running 1st July. Now I've pulled my calf muscle and developed a frozen shoulder.

Its soooo frustrating Sad

notapizzaeater · 26/08/2020 22:58

Have you looked at figure 8, few people I know rave about it - it's on my list of things to research

RedRum27 · 27/08/2020 00:56

@joeysapple6 weeks ago I started following team body project on YouTube. I was always the person to start exercise do great for two weeks and stop. I have tried Joe Wicks multiple times and can’t stick with it. It’s great exercise but I’m not fit enough/confident to maintain his level.

team body project are brilliant honestly. I track it on my Fitbit and to say I’m still with them 6 weeks on is a huge achievement.

Their focus is on movement and moving the body and building your fitness. Great lengths for workouts approx 30 mins each. This is the first one I was recommended to try and they have loads on their YouTube channel. Highly highly recommend them!

RedRum27 · 27/08/2020 00:58

I forgot to add, it’s low impact but high intensity and all standing. One thing I hated about Joe Wicks and the like is the idea that burpees seem to be included in every workout video and I hate them!! So for 30 seconds I’d stand there as I didn’t know what to substitute it with and ended up losing faith and giving up. Team body project are burpee free Grin

joeysapple · 27/08/2020 07:02

Thanks for all suggestions. @imnottoofussed I meant attack, not pump. I can't do Pump at the mo because off the squats and lunges. Attack is full of running.

I will try team body project and going to try to commit to balance too as I've just shelled out £96 for a year of LMOD. 😩

Chloe ting - fat burn videos have low impact alternatives to all the moves, you could try those

Todayisanewday75 · 27/08/2020 07:14

I second @RedRum27’s recommendation for Body Project. I’ve been a member for four years. I used to do their high impact workouts but have recently switched to low impact only, because of my knees, but still feel like I’m getting loads out of it.

KatherineParr4 · 27/08/2020 07:17

Swimming sees the obvious one to me.

Rainyday26 · 27/08/2020 07:55

If your knees are suffering it maybe that the small knee muscles themselves are simply too weak. I ran for years without problems even though I had ‘weak’ knees and couldn’t do lunges etc. Then I got injured snd it turned out because I sit at a desk and have hyper flexive knees the wrong muscles were taking the strain. If you look on line there are plenty of basic knee strengthening exercises that you can build up slowly and gently 10-15 mins a day that will increase your tolerance massively.
