10,000 steps - how long does it take you?

I know I need to move more - WFH really hasn't helped. But to do 10k steps I have to go for a walk for 1 hour 15 mins - am I really slow or is this about right? My routine is to walk 9-10pm - not sure this is going to work in the winter...

Put your Fitbit or whatever on your dominant wrist. I get steps for washing floors, polishing mirrors, stirring in kitchen and always notch a couple of hundred drying my hair. Also get them if you hoolahoop.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 23/07/2020 00:41

You don't have to get the 10,000 all in one go, you'll get a few thousand just moving around the house during the day - getting a cup of tea, going to the loo, making lunch etc.

You probably only need to do a 20 - 40 minute walk on top of that. How many are you doing already?

IdblowJonSnow · 23/07/2020 00:48

At least an hour I think.

But then you're not getting more steps in, just tricking your FitBit and what's the point in that?

I usually have to walk for about an hour to get 10K steps OP but by that stage I have usually got some steps on earlier in the day typically 1-3K

didireallysaythat · 23/07/2020 08:07

@EatsFartsAndLeaves when I was Inthe office, I did clock up 2-3000 steps. Now I get out of bed, go downstairs for breakfast, back up stairs to start at 9:30 and then I have calls most days until 13:00, starting again from 13:00. I tend to take a litre of water with me, so I don't leave my desk until 17-19:00. When I bother to track I can do less than 400 steps on a busy day.

Good to hear that 1-2 hours is what I need. I could go out at lunchtime but I think I'd get bored doing the sane shorter walk every day - in an hour I can almost get as far half way down the village (as far as the shop).

With dog, I seem to do one thousand in ten minutes. So if I had zero would need to do one hour forty.

AliceinBunnyland · 23/07/2020 08:36

OP I have found it harder to do the steps at home. Unless I specifically go for a walk or have an active day around the house then I wouldn't get anywhere near 10K.

Going to the office I'd get 10K just from the walk from car to train, train to office, buying a sandwich at lunchtime...

WitsEnding · 23/07/2020 08:41

That’s about right, or at least about the same as me. The fresh air is a bonus, by winter you will miss it if you don’t go out. Autumn morning walks are lovely.

didireallysaythat · 23/07/2020 09:15

Thank you all. I'm enjoying an hour of a pod cast in the evening sun but I'm sure in the winter I can enjoy it in the dark as well...

It takes me around an hour and half to do 10,000 steps walking the dog. That’s usually with 10 mins of ball throwing.

I have just got back from a shorter walk than usual (heavy rain on its way so wanted to get a walk in before then).

Here’s the analysis

Round it up to 5,000 steps in 45 mins = 10,000 steps would take 1 and half hours.

10,000 steps - how long does it take you?
chatwoo · 23/07/2020 12:39

I've started doing this in a "challenge" with my colleagues. Usually takes 90 mins of just walking, or less if I've pottering around the house fairly frequently - but I'd prefer for most of the steps to come from actual proper walking.

I’d prefer to do 10,000 steps in one walk too or split between 2 walks. Any steps I’ve taken just pottering around the house/garden is surplus.

10,000 steps done during walks where you can break a sweat plus surplus pottering usually gives me between 13000 - 14000 steps per day 😊

MrsJamin · 23/07/2020 16:23

Stirring a pot is a ridiculous way to "to get steps in". Steps is not a very useful way of measuring physical exercise especially if it includes things you're doing sitting down. 150 mins a week of exercise that raises your heartbeat is the first measure of what you should be doing, and then I'd just compare time taken. An hour of walking a day is a good thing.

Rinsefirst · 23/07/2020 16:43

@MrsJamin
For over a year I averaged 25k steps a day.
I wfh four hours a day so it took me 3 hrs. Bloody hard work and not feasible for everyone. To get my steps in I got up an hour earlier. It was crazy and I couldn’t sustain it so I only do 18k now and actually am more interested in calories burned.
However, annually I make confectionery at Xmas on a semi pro basis. It involves standing stirring for an hour at a time at the cooker. Believe me stirring can be a workout and I could easily chalk up 3-4K steps a day that way. I think getting steps in by any method is to be applauded because you are actually moving. Not everyone can leave their home.

MrsJamin · 23/07/2020 17:43

It's up to you what you do, I'm just saying it's not "steps" that's all.

AliceinBunnyland · 23/07/2020 18:05

It's up to you what you do but standing and stirring (while it may use energy and burn calories) is not "steps".

Fanthorpe · 23/07/2020 18:31

I’ve just checked my Fitbit data and 10,000 steps for me is 4 miles, and I did it in an hour and fifteen mins.

Have a fast walk round the block first thing, try and pace about a bit more in the day, an hour in the day, fast walk round the block the other way in the evening. All adds up.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/07/2020 18:37

I Mumsnet on my phone or read my Kindle at lunch time. I do this while pacing the kitchen. I can rack up the steps without realising (about 1000 in 10 minutes). I do the same while watching TV... Pacing the Living room.

chatwoo · 24/07/2020 04:31

@FinnegansWhiskers I love the term "surplus pottering"! Grin

fellrunner85 · 24/07/2020 08:00

On a walk with the kids (say 3-4 miles an hour) it takes around an hour to do 10k steps.
If I'm running, it takes 6.5 miles to get to 10k steps, so around 50 mins.
I'm still surprised by the difference in mileage for 10,000 steps, but it works out that that the slower you go, the more steps you take per mile.

Fanthorpe · 24/07/2020 08:06

I guess when you’re running your stride length increases as you’re propelling yourself a bit harder.
I take a lot of steps over a mile as I have short legs/stride.
Also different devices give varying results.

Scruffyoak · 30/07/2020 08:50

Not sure. Because I have an active job and 4 kids I usually hit 8000 on a day at home/work without doing much. I have my goal a bit higher to 15000 so that means I do exercise. It does take longer than you think if you watching it on a walk.
