Anyone else turn beetroot when they run/exercise

Readysetcake · 14/07/2020 18:17

I do. I find it really embarrassing. I hate running when it’s busy as I feel people are staring at my bright red face.

I guess there is nothing I can do about it and it’s a pretty vain thing to worry about but it heightens my anxiety and I find myself not exercising because of it. Takes ages to go down too.

Just wondered if anyone else is the same. All the people I see out on my routes are steaming past me at blistering rates not even breaking a sweat!

Yes, me! Even when I was very fit, running 5 days a week, doing 10 gym classes a week, 10Ks etc. I was always being asked if I was ok!

Bmidreams · 14/07/2020 18:20

Yes! Always have. I try not to care!

expatinspain · 14/07/2020 18:22

Yes, always have. It's annoying as some people comment on it as if you're unfit or you're actually unaware you look like a tomato or something. Now I live in Spain I go even redder exercising in the heat 😂

MonsteraCheeseplant · 14/07/2020 18:24

Yes me and I HATE it. It makes me look so unfit! But it's really not a reflection of how hard I'm exercising. So annoying.

Pan44 · 14/07/2020 18:25

And me. And my fringe plasters itself to my forehead too, a particularly unpleasant combo!

Booksandwine80 · 14/07/2020 18:26

Yep. I also get strange white patches which make me look like some kind of mutated panda Grin

daisychain1620 · 14/07/2020 18:28

I go very red and the sweat lashes off me (attractive!)and it takes ages to cool down. It used to really bother me as my friends who I go running with don't break a sweat. I'm approaching in my late thirties and it doesn't bother me anymore, I just accept that's what happens. I just wish I had accepted it earlier!

OhMyDarling · 14/07/2020 18:28

Yep
I rarely exercise other than walking because of it

Alez · 14/07/2020 18:28

I do! Always have, even at my fittest. My skin generally really easily marks e.g. if I sit with cross legs I'll get a huge red mark within minutes, so I think it must all be related.

Readysetcake · 14/07/2020 18:35

So glad I’m not the only one! I knew it was unlikely I was, but it can feel that way when all you see is sweat-less people!
My skin marks easily as well Alez. I was hoping it would lessen as I got fitter. But nope. I do try not to care and I now know it’s not a reflection of my fitness. But I was hoping to be able to do lunchtime jogging when offices open up as my DH works away in the week so will be the only chance I will get post lockdown due to young kids. But I don’t like the thought of sitting with a bright red face all afternoon.

Me and I seem to sweat about four times as much as other people. I have no idea why.

But honestly, how much are you judging people by their faces when they exercise?
I’d say I’m more likely to think someone was g working very hard if they weren’t sweating and red faced Wink

Jodri · 15/07/2020 07:57

Yes I am puce and sweat buckets. Occasionally I will start sweat waiting for a class to start.
I’ve found wearing a Hygge headband helps soak up my sweat so it doesn’t blind me, so it could be worse.
I used to be so embarrassed and thought I was so unfit. Now, I own it! My skin is the best it’s ever been and I read once of some scientific findings that sweat has some components in it that is so good for your skin. I love my sweat patches and redness it shows I’ve worked hard and given my all in that session. As long as you are hygienic no one else’s problem. Yeah and unfortunately I totally judge those folk who don’t sweat or go red at all...they are coasting and not working hard enough.

MrsJamin · 15/07/2020 08:01

Interestingly it's only women this happens to! In women, blood rushes to your extremities when exercising but in men blood rushes to their central organs. So yeah, another shit thing about being a woman and doing physical exercise. It happens to me all the time when running. I don't care and neither should any of you, especially if it prevents you doing exercise which is the best thing you can do for your health!

Tappering · 15/07/2020 08:02

Yes - bright red face and it takes ages to go away! Really annoying.

fedup2017 · 15/07/2020 08:08

Yep. I used to avoid exercising because of it. Got to 40 and decided to no longer give a shit.
Its a bit unfortunate that lots of women's running tops tend to be neon pink, as it clashes a bit. Plus it can take hours for my face to return to a normal colour.
It shows I'm working hard though, which is a good thing

IsMiseMorag · 15/07/2020 08:10

Me too. Tomato red. And YY to the Hyggebands - who knew heads were so sweaty? I have six on rotation, they're fab.

MrsJamin · 15/07/2020 08:13

Just read this really interesting article - fab quote from a doctor:
Enjoy it – your red face means that your vascular system is directing large amounts of blood through your skin which is bringing lovely hormones and cytokines, as well as nutrition and removing toxins which will help keep your skin younger looking and healthier," he points out.
It's literally your body working efficiently and healthily. Shaming women who exercise and get sweaty and aren't groomed all the time... It's just got to stop!

stillfeelingmad · 15/07/2020 08:19

No I'm lucky my face doesn't get too pink but I am an excessive sweater, from the moment I start moving patches appear under my arms, on my knees and sadly between the ass cheeks. Makes exercise classes so awkward I have to shop very carefully Blush

k1233 · 15/07/2020 08:21

I get the bright red face. When I ride I can't have a grown up single plait as it matts at the nape of my neck. So I have two plaits. I also have curly hair. When I sweat a lot, my plaits decide to ringlet and spring up so I look like bloody Cindy Brady!

Readysetcake · 15/07/2020 21:25

@MrsJamin thanks for posting that quote. That’s a really positive spin to put on it! And you’re right we should t feel shamed at all. It’s our patriarchal society that’s conditioned us to feel embarrassed if we’re not looking like we’ve stepped out of a magazine. I shall try harder not to give a shit.

Yep, another trotting beetroot here...although I definitely give less fucks now I'm middle aged Grin

Siriusthedogstar · 15/07/2020 21:29

Yes!!! Bright red and puffy. Very attractive. My chest goes really red too. Also when I’m anxious or embarrassed or stressed. It’s such a gift 😁

DiscoMoo · 16/07/2020 19:00

Also a beetroot here with copious amounts of sweat. Joining a running club really helped me to realise it is totally normal, I found my tribe! I don’t care any more, if anyone wants to judge me for looking like I have exercised that says more about them.

MerryDeath · 16/07/2020 19:01

me 🙋🏻‍♀️ honestly just don't think i was made for exercise. i'm not even overweight or horribly unfit and i never do it as i just hate how it makes me feel and i go bright red to boot.
