Are you going to return when gyms open?

Personally I don't think it's worth it. I'm able to do some exercise at home and will carry on for now.

I don't want to pay my usual fee to not know when I'll be able to access the gym. And even when in the gym, I think the rules will be frustrating and limit what you can do.

Interested to hear other's thoughts

I think I'll be more than happy to go back to gym.

For me, I'm a bit sick of exercising in the same place I work, eat, relax etc. I'm so keen to be in a space that isn't my house!

josette · 10/07/2020 12:51

I don’t intend to. I will give notice on my membership. I have got into a routine of walking 6km a day and keeping fit at home.

NamedyChangedy · 10/07/2020 12:52

I'm in two minds - during lockdown, I've developed a solid at-home workout schedule that works ok. But I also miss having access to a barbell and a treadmill. I could potentially invest and make space for them at home, but I'd rather not.

I'm curious to see how gyms will set themselves up to meet the guidelines as it'll be a very different experience. And presumably they'll have to charge much more to cover their costs.

Cheesaholic · 10/07/2020 12:55

No. Gyms are very high risk places. Not worth the risk tbh. My area is seeing a surge in cases so I will not be going out.

evilharpy · 10/07/2020 13:10

I miss the gym terribly. I have plenty of equipment etc at home including a spin bike but I like the camaraderie of classes and always find I work harder at the gym. I've booked a couple of outdoor classes but will weigh up the indoor stuff and see how risky I feel it is. The gov guidelines around space (100sqft per person) and lack of loud music to discourage people from having to shout will mean that a lot of classes aren't feasible anyway just yet.

cariadlet · 10/07/2020 13:15

Before lockdown, I went to a class every day.

I think that I might start yoga and pilates again if they reduce class numbers in order to spread people out. I've bought my own mat in lockdown so would use that and you don't tend to breathe heavily so droplets won't be travelling far.

It will be a long time before I do an aerobics type class again - impossible to social distance and too much heavy breathing when you work hard and get out of puff.

I doubt I'll use the actual gym for a while either. I'm not keen on using equipment that other people have used.

GroggyLegs · 10/07/2020 13:21

I used to use the gym when the weather was too bad to run, or if I finished work early.
I'm sad to give up my membership, but I'm not willing to pay a monthly fee if the flexibility is no longer there.

I think the experience of using the gym could possibly be better in peak times, but if you're booked in an hour session with 5 other people that want to do weights & there's only 4 benches (my gym is small) it's going to be frustrating.

Also, people are manky.

heynori · 10/07/2020 13:22

YES!!!!!

We have a lovely gym in our apartment building. I'll be back the minute they reopen. I hate feeling fat and flabby.

nbee84 · 10/07/2020 13:29

I did an outdoor hiit class at the gym this morning. Loved it, pushed myself much harder than I would have at home and it was great to have the instructors encouragement and some actual real people to talk to afterwards Grin They are going to keep some outdoor classes going even after we can get back in the main building. The info we've been sent about how the gym has been set up and the cleaning arrangements (and plenty of cleaning equipment for self use that we can access) gives me confidence to go back.
However, I do intend to keep up some of my home workouts. I'm enjoying Les Mills on Demand and a bit of outdoor running.

DamnShesaSexyChick · 10/07/2020 13:30

I think I will do yes,

InglouriousBasterd · 10/07/2020 13:33

Yes, but mine is very well spaced out and spacious anyway, as well as being usually empty when I go (uni gym, go in the morning!)

Hinckers · 10/07/2020 13:35

I really can’t decide. I’d love to go swimming but the thought of Covid soup gives me shivers.

Headandheart · 10/07/2020 13:36

I can’t see how the classes I go to will work. Packed out aerobic
classes with everyone puffing and panting in a dance studio with air conditioning and no windows.

Devlesko · 10/07/2020 13:37

Gosh, no they are terribly expensive and exercise is free.
Never paid/ been to a gym in my life.

MrsJamin · 11/07/2020 12:33

I'm not in a rush at the moment, I have a good bunch of equipment at home and have been doing other things like running outdoors to supplement it. However I don't like working out inside my house so I think when the weather gets too bad I'll want to return to the gym. I don't do classes, I'd just be returning for a wider variety of weights and ability to work out in all weathers.

MarcelineMissouri · 11/07/2020 12:35

Possibly won’t be returning to classes just yet but I can’t wait to get back to swimming!

MrsDJ30 · 11/07/2020 12:55

@Headandheart those type of classes will now be extremely limited people based on the space they are held in. A lot of instructors are saying they won’t do it as there’s no income to be made from it.

Those who teach group exercise are still stuck.

480Widdio · 11/07/2020 13:07

Yes,but only swimming which is all I ever do.

Will use the outdoor pool late evening if possible, waiting to hear whether we will need to book,I imagine we will.I will go in swimsuit and come home in it,not using the changing rooms.

lljkk · 12/07/2020 09:27

I am gagging to get back in pool. Downloaded the app last night & trying to get a login. I was never a gym bunny but would happily go if I were.

KatherineJaneway · 12/07/2020 09:29

Definitely. I can't wait. I much prefer to exercise in the gym watching my iPad than long walks or just on my exercise bike watching TV

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/07/2020 09:32

Yes I’m desperate to swim. I’m 22 weeks pregnant and PGP is kicking in, long walks are out and whilst I’m doing a virtual pregnancy yoga class at home I can feel I just need to swim. I’m fine booking a slot in advance for this.

DigShin · 12/07/2020 09:36

@Hinckers covid soup it is! I miss the gym so much(and lockdown drinking has not been kind to my waistline!) but my anxiety is through the roof about touching equipment that lots of people are using. Don’t think I can do it... annoying because membership fees will be coming out again at the end of the month. £30 down the drain basically

EmmaStone · 12/07/2020 19:43

I'm not a member of a bricks and mortar gym (instead I belong to Move GB that gives access to a huge variety of providers. I largely use it for my yoga classes), but I do go to yoga, see a PT and my PT also holds a circuits class that I normally attend. Yoga I've been doing via Zoom, I think they plan to continue live streaming classes when they get back in the studio, otherwise it wouldn't be financially viable for them to hold a class for 5 people. I've really enjoyed the flexibility of being able to live stream, so that works for me.

I've been seeing my PT one to one outdoors for about a month, and am happy to do one to one sessions in his gym (it's only his space, not a large gym, and I trust him to clean between clients, he always had very high standards before Covid, so I'm sure he'll be very responsible). His circuits class is going to be trickier, outdoors would be viable, but again, not sure a group class indoors will make sense financially. Depends where he does it and what overheads he'll have I guess.

I'd probably be quite happy to swim, I reckon the chlorine would kill the bug, but using changing rooms and lockers would be a bit of a hot spot I reckon.

I'm also lucky that I have a lot of equipment at home, so have always done a high proportion of exercise at home anyway, so not much change really.

Mooserp · 13/07/2020 09:45

I rarely went to classes at the gym as I have lots of problem areas (dodgy back etc.) which means I can't do a lot of the exercises, particularly high impact. Doing online classes I can adapt the exercises and substitute different ones if needed, so I actually prefer it. I've also been trying lots of new things, such as playing around on an exercise ball, which I wouldn't do in a gym as it might bounce off and hit someone else or I'd get unwanted attention when messing up.

So it's worked out quite well for me being at home. Obviously I don't have a pool, but I'm going to go open water swimming instead.

No, I do yoga every day at home, also happy to walk miles. I'm sure DH will be going back though.
