Are you going to return when gyms open?

Personally I don't think it's worth it. I'm able to do some exercise at home and will carry on for now.

I don't want to pay my usual fee to not know when I'll be able to access the gym. And even when in the gym, I think the rules will be frustrating and limit what you can do.

I cannot wait. I'm booked in for classes on Saturday morning.

However, its just for the short term as DL isn't going to continue with Les Mills. Once my membership is up, I'll be moving. Such a shame as I love my gym.

CeibaTree · 22/07/2020 07:27

I've already cancelled my membership. I've discovered running and there are so many exercise and yoga videos on YouTube that I don't feel the gym fees are worth it anymore - especially since I only really had time to go to the gym once per week usually.

SuePerb · 22/07/2020 07:44

yes I'm looking forward to returning to my yoga studio - it's not the same doing it alone at home.

I don't go to a gym atm as I run outside, but am thinking of starting to do some weights with a personal trainer so may join up.

I’m in Western Australia. Our gyms have been open since the middle of May . They were only allowed to be open during staffed hours and limited to the amount of people in. The gyms provided wipes, sanitizer spray, hand rub etc and everyone was and did ( at least at the gym I go to) wiped everything down. Classes have never been that busy ( one of the reasons I joined this gym !). So we didn’t have to book in. If people were wanting to use weights , do their own thing they were encouraged to come at other times than class times. It worked.
We now have 24/7 access to gyms. People still clean equipment. It’s great.
However we are tracking well and have had 101 days with no community spread and only 17 active cases in the state

Is that true about DL and Les Mills. Because I've heard they're denying it and saying it's temp due to restrictions and will bring it back when they can.?
RunningFromInsanity · 22/07/2020 10:28

I’ve already booked my daily sessions for Saturday-Saturday.
Cannot wait.

Monstermissy36 · 22/07/2020 10:28

I can't wait to get back to the gym...

However my gyms classes opened today for Saturday and were booked up with 20 odd waiting 20 mins after they opened.

I don't wanna pay for something I can't use. Hopefully it will calm down quickly 🤷‍♀️

@Polyxena I stayed up til midnight so that I was the first one to book because I was worried they would get booked up quickly. I needn’t have bothered as there were plenty left the next day but I didn’t want to risk it! Blush

PatchworkElmer · 22/07/2020 16:38

With regret- no. It’s too high a risk to my mind. BUT I feel very guilty about it! Hoping I feel differently by winter as I don’t like running outside in the cold.

I have just booked for 10am Saturday and Tuesday. Dread to think how difficult it will be after four months.

BilbyBlue · 22/07/2020 23:22

Nope. There isn't a more high risk place besides a hospital. I really miss it though.

moonbells · 24/07/2020 14:21

No. Which is a shame since I only discovered it at the age of nearly 50 and then turned into a bit of an addict. Never realised how much I would like running. But I don't much like running outside. I live in a very hilly area and there's very few things I can do which doesn't involve going up one, and I often hurt my knees running downhill again.

After the last 4 months I've lost all my fitness again and added a stone, so have ordered a home treadmill and I am ridiculously excited. It's foldable so I can bung it in a corner when not using. And having worked out that last year I spent over £1000 on gym and PT, it's a lot cheaper too... even if it only lasts six months!

Went to the gym this morning and it was great. Few of us waiting for the doors to be opened. Was just so great to be back.

NorthernSpirit · 25/07/2020 14:40

Went this morning (Nuffield Health) - very organised. Was wonderful to be back!

Spodge · 25/07/2020 16:32

I went this morning and it was lovely to be back. Sessions have to be booked so it does not get overcrowded. Protocol is to clean equipment before and after use, plus the staff go round cleaning stuff as well. I felt safe and happy. We're not allowed sweat towels, so had to resort to pulling up my T shirt to wipe my face and was lugging two bottles of water around as I normally need a refill but don't want to refill from a communal fountain. They have forbidden people to drink direct from the fountains but people are not good about keeping the mouths of their bottles away from the tap.

EmpressPenguin · 25/07/2020 21:22

I also went back today and loved it. But that is because I love the gym. I wasn't over impressed by the risk reduction measures. Given that gyms have been linked to outbreaks of covid on more than one occasion, and mask wearing is not really on the cards, there needs to be serious emphasis on hygiene and compliance. My gym seems to be operating just the same as they did before lockdown , except with a few more signs, hoping people might feel the urge to avoid others, wipe down their equipment and wash their hands frequently. The staff seem to be trying really hard reminding people, but the patrons, not so much. While I was thrilled to be back, I feel like there might still be a way to go before people adjust to the fact that we are adapting to a new reality, rather than going back to the old one.

LakeFlyPie · 26/07/2020 19:06

How are gyms organising BodyPump classes? I rang my gym to ask if suitably spaced 'stations' would be set up with step, bar, plates etc which people booked into class could arrive, use for class and then leave. This struck me as an obvious solution to the usual trail of folk traipsing back and forth to the rack in the corner of the studio but response was "that's a good idea, can I put you on hold...." cane back and said that they are encouraging people to socially distance when queuing for classes but it's business as pre Covid usual once inside HmmHasn't inspired me with confidence I have to say

EmpressPenguin · 26/07/2020 20:20

For my gym, they had marked out spaces on the floor and provided anti bacterial cleanser but that was it. Only one bottle of disinfectant per studio. I'll be bringing my own wipes in future, rather than sharing the single bottle.

I'm hoping to see some improvements next time. But right now it feels like my gym is trying to tread the line between giving their customers a normal experience and avoiding undue risk. Unfortunately, in my area at least, customers are not very aware and they need direction. They'll only clean their equipment if everyone else us doing it. If not, they think there's no problem. I know this sounds mad but that is what I saw on Saturday. Staff were being careful but members were acting like the last four months never happened. TBH this is in line with local behaviour so not much of a surprise :(

CoronaIsShit · 26/07/2020 21:13

2nd day back today and my back is feeling better already. Can really see how fast walking/jogging on pavement was making me so stiff with the impact on my joints. Feel so much better after being on the xtrainer, Very surprised I was almost able to get back to my pre-lockdown levels on weights too. Muscle memory is definitely a thing!

Our gym is allowing a limit if 100 or at a time (not including classes) and there’s only been a few other people in there the last two days. No more than 10 people have booked slots at the we’re going for the next two weeks as well which is great but I worry it won’t be able to operate for long if people are cancelling their memberships. Ours has a massive pool too which only a handful of people were in.

They have lots of sanitising stations dotted around with hand sanitizer, wipes and anti viral sprays to spray on them to double up, so well prepared. I always wiped machines before and after use anyway but taking a bit more time to spray, wipe and dry before using each machine now but it’s worth it. Lots of machines out of use for social distancing but still loads of stuff to use.

It’s great to be backGrin.
