What’s your running pace per km?

Sodamncold · 18/05/2020 08:42

I have improved during lockdown and I think (sadly) it’s because ice not been running with friends and so talking!

My routes are fairly hilly. I average 5.18 a Km. Sometimes a km on the route is as low as 4,47 a km but then on the steep climbs can be 6.5 a km.

But my average usually about 5.18

Length 6km - 12km

My son... 9 years old average 4.40 on a 5k run and arrives home not having broken a sweat!

Wow you guys are fast!
If I get my min/km below 6 I pat myself on the back for being on fire. Mind you, running isn't my main exercise so I suppose I'm not that geared up for it

MsJaneAusten · 26/05/2020 09:18

Speed is not important in running. It’s the distance that counts.

For you, maybe.

But for others, it might be the speed, or the social side, or making it up that hill, or getting to work, or beating a PB, or proving a point, or all manner of things.

This is the marvellous thing about running. What matters can be different for everyone. The motivation is different for everyone.

Mo

Mysterian · 04/06/2020 12:52

Just over 8 minutes. Very much in team "fat jogger"!

moveandmove · 04/06/2020 13:20

I work in minutes per mile not km but my best 5k time is 22.5 minutes. I'm a bit slower than that at the minute as I switched running for powerlifting!

PoopySalata · 04/06/2020 22:32

I prefer half marathon distance and about 80% of my running is at my HM easy pace, which is 5:50/km. So I'd call that my average pace. I've not run a 5k for a while but my PB is 22.54 which is about 4:35/km. I'd be slower than that now.

I started running in October 2018 (age 44), my first 5k took me 40 minutes. I've built up to 35 miles a week and always do one proper workout a week (intervals, tempo or hills).

I absolutely love running, I wish I'd found it earlier.

Mysterian · 05/06/2020 11:40

I'm a failure!

Week 6 run 3. "5 minutes running. My calfs and shins were tight to start with so the first 10 minutes were not good before they sorted themselves out. The main problem though was the beautiful location. A nearby common. A very open common which meant a bad headwind for the first half of the run. I had a minute's rest at the halfway point.

Behind me now. Next time I will stretch more before starting, and pay more attention to the weather. I might switch to nearby woods. A minor setback.

Brimful · 10/06/2020 15:36

I'm loving reading everyone's times! So interesting! If I'm absolutely flat out then 5.50 (just about getting a sub-30 5k) but my happy pace is 6.30-7. :) my 10k PB is 62 mins.

When its hot though, my pace slows down to 7.30!

GuyFawkesDay · 10/06/2020 15:45

Team newbie here too.

Average about 7minutes/km.

Obviously some are much faster because they're downhill 🤣

Ellapaella · 10/06/2020 18:54

Everyone here is so fast! I've been running (jogging) for a few years and can't beat 6.5 more like 7-7.5 most days. It basically takes me about 31 minutes to run 5K.
I've stopped focusing so much on time - I need to enjoy it and not stress about it. I started doing 5k and it got to the point where I needed to either get my speed up or go further with each run so I opted for going further.
I do have a heart condition which impacted my ability to exercise but I've had a procedure just over a year ago and managed to improve my fitness so much so that's good enough for me. The fact I can actually run 5k is an achievement in itself.

Ellapaella · 10/06/2020 18:57

I would like to know how to improve my speed though if anyone has any tips?

CuriousPixie · 10/06/2020 19:05

Well I’m underweight, a fit size 8 and I’m just a plodder. Most folk on this thread are way faster than I am. I’m happy to just do a run. Have actually stopped measuring how far, how fast because I’d find that I came in from a run feeling great only to check my stats to discover I’d run slower than I thought or not as far as it felt then I’d feel deflated and all my positive energy would disappear.

Coconut2010 · 10/06/2020 23:28

I can’t believe how fast some of you are!
I am quite fit and tend to average 6mn per km (or just under) for a 9-12km run. My fastest has been 5.30/40mn when I’m in good form and for a shorter run (6/7k), but I usually don’t bother running less than 9-10k.

Brimful · 11/06/2020 07:15

I hope others aren't put off by some faster times - (I find them inspiring and intersting) we're all so different you really cant compare yourself! Just enjoy your running at your pace, and smashing your own goals Grin

I am so, so proud of my 5k and 10k PB times, someone else might not be and would consider me slow, but that's okay! Just do you. :)

Panticus · 11/06/2020 09:56

@Ellapaella

I would like to know how to improve my speed though if anyone has any tips?
For me, I think it comes down to:
  1. Mixing up your runs - don't always do the same route and distance. So I will alternate between short (fast) runs, long (slow) runs, interval sessions etc.
  2. Most importantly - incorporate some interval sessions into your training. They are always SO hard for me but they make such a difference to my speed. There are heaps of different formats out there but again I try mix them up so some weeks I'll do 4 x 1km sprints, other weeks I'll do 12 x 400m or 90s intervals etc.
  3. Making sure you have rest days so your legs aren't permanently fatigued
CatandtheFiddle · 11/06/2020 10:17

Impressed by your speeds!

I started running outside again during lockdown, and have achieved just under 7kph over 5k - running on flat pavements. But I'm 60, so I go for stamina not speed.

Ellapaella · 11/06/2020 12:30

Thank you @Panticus - that's really helpful. I'll give that a try.

BadAlice · 11/06/2020 12:36

5km PB - 4:30/km
10km PB - 5:05/km
Normal training runs - 5:00-6:00/km depending on distance and terrain (usually a trail runner)

Currently pregnant - 5:50-6:30/km with the odd faster km thrown in when I feel up to it. Current pregnant 5km PB is 28:30ish.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 17/06/2020 07:33

In January it was about 8 minutes 30 seconds. Now it's between 6 minutes 30 and 7 minutes. I'm still slow, but I'm so proud of the improvement I've made. I'm not thin but also not overweight, in fact I've not lost any weight at all since Jan, but I am definitely fitter and healthier, and that's so important to me at the moment. I'm a teacher so will be interested to see if I can maintain this improvement when I'm in school every day again.

CatandtheFiddle · 17/06/2020 11:38

Wow, that's such an improvement! How did you do it? I mean - apart from just keeping at the running & getting fitter?

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 17/06/2020 14:36

Thank you! Literally just by running and doing PE with Joe on the days I didn't run! I hadn't run for over a year when I started again in Jan because of injury, but in my early 30s could run 10k in just under an hour (I'm now early 40s).

WhatHaveIFound · 17/06/2020 15:14

Just started C25K on a treadmill (yes, a version does exist) as I want to be able to run 5km before I go out into the real world. Have run short distances off and on for 30 years but never faster than 7mins per km.

I'm normally a cyclist doing 20-30 miles on rides out but i'm going to try and fit in running too.

CatandtheFiddle · 17/06/2020 18:23

I run at about 7 mins per km - I'm 61. A fast 5k for me is 35 minutes!

ShoeJunkie · 18/06/2020 08:18

I’m a lockdown C25K graduate - now running 6k a couple of time a week. My pace is a pretty consistent 6.40.

Hoping to build up to 10k by the autumn.
