What’s your running pace per km?

I have improved during lockdown and I think (sadly) it’s because ice not been running with friends and so talking!

My routes are fairly hilly. I average 5.18 a Km. Sometimes a km on the route is as low as 4,47 a km but then on the steep climbs can be 6.5 a km.

But my average usually about 5.18

Length 6km - 12km

My son... 9 years old average 4.40 on a 5k run and arrives home not having broken a sweat!

@ozziex99 it really depends! For your average amateur woman, I would say sub-25 minutes is good, low 20s very good. But for my husband and his running friends they would say sub-20. But really, I figure an awful lot of people couldn't run 5km at any speed so we should be proud of whatever we can achieve!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 22/05/2020 06:26

It depends on terrain surely? I live somewhere very hilly. My usual long run I do is 12 miles with 3000'feet of climbing! However if I run along the valley or the canal it's much flatter and faster.

Sodamncold · 22/05/2020 06:38

@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie

Yes - I did say difference in my speeds when hilly and flat in OP

6:30 ish; was 5:45 when fit but currently doing C25K so much lower! But it's ok, it's better than doing nothing!

Flamingolingo · 22/05/2020 07:22

This is really interesting, thanks! I’m trying to learn to run (I hate running) and was looking at my stats on Garmin yesterday. My running pace is very consistently 5.30 - 5.40/km but I can’t keep it up (struggling to move beyond 5 mins of continuous running for my intervals). I was wondering if I’m going too fast and it looks like I probably am!

Jeleste · 22/05/2020 07:34

I run at 8-9km when at my best. But ive been running for years. I do have to take a break over spring/summer because of my hayfever asthma. I sometimes run at home on the treadmill during that time, but even inside i have to use an inhaler after 30mins, so usually i just stop running in that time and do short exercise programs.
When i first start again from a break i run at 6km and i run for an hour each time.

DaisyDaisydoo · 22/05/2020 07:41

Oh god this has made me feel so slow!! I’m on my last week of couch to 5k and my running watch always says 9 point something!

rosy71 · 22/05/2020 07:44

About 6 mins per km so 30 mins for 5k & 60 mins for 10k. Parkrun is often quicker - about 5.50. Running on my own further than 5k, I often go much slower, anything up to 6.45 per km. I've been running with my 12 year old recently. On one 4k run I managed 5.36 per km!! I had to lie on the pavement when I got home I was so tired!

TwistyHair · 22/05/2020 07:48

@Flamingolingo everything I’ve read says to start slow. And that’s the only way to build up. I tried niko niko but that’s felt too slow. However I’m still reslly slow but can now run for 28 minutes. Which wouldn’t be possible faster.

chutneypig · 22/05/2020 07:54

I’m anything between 5.30 and 7 per km at the moment. I’m rubbish at pushing myself outside of parkrun or a race. I’m slowing in the heat too.

@DaisyDaisydoo that was my experience at the end of c25k too. You’re going into a great period where pace will pick up quickly, it’s very satisfying. It’s far better to keep it steady starting out, I hear of so many people push it early and then have to stop completely as they’ve picked up an injury.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 22/05/2020 07:54

Between 5.40 and 5.20. I used to be much quicker but a series of injuries, lack of time to run and age have slowed me down. Lockdown has allowed me to go back to running 3 times per week. I can't do more frequently due to injury risk but can now run 10k relatively comfortably again Smile Yesterday was slow but so hot!

Flamingolingo · 22/05/2020 08:25

Thanks @TwistyHair - I thought I was being slow, but it looks like maybe not slow enough. Certainly doesn’t feel fast. But perhaps I need to take it slower

Sidge · 22/05/2020 08:55

I’ve been running again since February, and am more of a Shetland pony than a racehorse. I’m very short, a bit chubby and more of a jogger than a runner.

My best 5km time is 37 minutes and my 10km time was 77 minutes. I accidentally ran 9 miles last weekend in 1:45 so I was pleased with that.

I’m not a natural runner so am just pleased I’m doing SOMETHING and am getting fitter and stronger. I’ve signed up for Parkrun for when it restarts, and would like to enter a 10k.

For me it’s beating myself, not anyone else. I’ll never manage a 20 minute 5k, ever, so am not even going to try! I’ll just enjoy the process.

DaisyDaisydoo · 22/05/2020 08:55

@chutneypig thanks that makes me feel better!

ReturnOfTheTriffids · 22/05/2020 09:02

if I ran 5km it would take 40 mins. I can average a pace of 8mins a km

if I did my fastest, best ever km it would take about 6 mins 30 seconds but I couldn't keep that up for more than a km :)

I quite like running the pace I do. It switches off my mind. Every now and then I try and improve my speed and run quicker than 8 mins a km and every time I fail. I think I am just destined to be a slow runner.

it used to bother me but it doesn't any more - I'm not running to race, I do it to keep the weight off and keep sane. I'm also not a natural runner - I've got short legs and exercise induced asthma and turn purple when I exercise!

Looneytune253 · 22/05/2020 09:34

Hahaha my absolute best has been 8.03 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ but I am just part way through couch to 5k. I am NOT a runner

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 22/05/2020 09:54

New to running and borderline obese (BMI 30 on the dot, down from over 36 after DS was born).

My current speed is around 7.6min/km over 5km (38 mins in total for 5km). I'd like to get it down under 6min/km so I can do 5km in half an hour.

If I'm just running a mile I can do that in 10 minutes so I think that's 6.25min/km.

I'm hoping as I get back towards normal weight and get fitter my times will improve.

rookiemere · 22/05/2020 09:58

I joined a great FB challenge this month called This Gurl Runs. You set yourself a challenge of either running 25km 50km or 100km over the month and pay £15 and if you succeed you get a tshirt at the end of the month.
What's particularly good about it - and pertinent to this thread - is people post their runs including speed. I'm always in the last 10% at parkrun taking around 37-39 mins to do it, but loads of similar and slower runners in this group which makes me feel a lot mire satisfied with my own times.

rookiemere · 22/05/2020 09:58

This Girl runs not gurl Blush

BlackLabRules · 23/05/2020 18:59

I've just finished C25, could anyone in the know interpret these? Reading this thread it looks like I'm a tortoise when in my head I'm Paula Radcliffe!

What’s your running pace per km?
rookiemere · 23/05/2020 19:18

So you're 7.32 mins pee km. Perfectly respectable pace and you wouldn't be last in parkrun.

rookiemere · 23/05/2020 19:18

Per km not pee km Grin

HoneysuckIejasmine · 23/05/2020 19:21

About 8:40. Joint problems!

Ultrasoft · 23/05/2020 19:29

I'm only doing abou 5:30 now in my 50s after a string of injuries but at my peak (late 30s, I was a late starter) it was about 4:50

Theredjellybean · 23/05/2020 19:40

Good heavens you lot are fast.
I run half marathons regularly and train in hilly routes and still average 7:30-8 min kms
I used to get upset and tried all sorts to speed up.. Now I just enjoy my running and am proud I run 20kms three times a week.
Plus I like slow running.. More time to my self
