If you wear contacts and go to the gym

How do you shower after?

I always wear contacts when out of the house. I'm following a post op rehab program and at the moment I drive to physio, drive back and shower at home. But DH has a new job and is taking the car in Jan so I will have to go by bus. And my physio wants me to do two extra training sessions in the gym in between physio. Apart from the fact that doing a 2.5 hour trip to spend 10 minutes in the gym seems ridiculous, how do you manage contacts, showering and getting home again?

I just shower with my contacts in.

swashbucklecheer · 26/12/2019 19:22

I wear them in the shower and keep my eyes shut

concooktion · 26/12/2019 19:25

You don't worry about washing them out or getting an infection? I've never showered wearing lenses!

It’s never occurred to me to take them out.

Gonetoget · 26/12/2019 19:28

If I have mine in, I just take them out when I go in wet area/ shower. A glasses case and contact lense container aren’t that heavy to stick In Your bag.

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/12/2019 19:29

I often sleep in my contacts (thicker softer ones it’s ok to sleep in) and shower in them pretty much every day. I don’t run water directly into my eyes. No concerns. I’d never wear them swimming though.

beela · 26/12/2019 19:30

It's never occurred to me that it could be a problem Blush

I've been wearing lenses for 15 years though, and never lost one or had an infection.

dimdarkashian · 26/12/2019 19:32

As PPs have said. Just close your eyes when your face is under the water. Don't remove them for a while afterwards as the steam can cause them to temporarily stick to your eyes.

KatieRobin · 26/12/2019 19:36

I’ve worn lenses for over 20 years and have worn them in the shower, when I wash my face ... when I work out. If they ever feel dry or not right just keep a spare pair with you to change in to .... never needed to though ... in all the years

Popsdob · 26/12/2019 19:49

It's never occurred to me to take them out - wear them all the time apart from sleeping. Inc swimming.

PlanDeRaccordement · 26/12/2019 19:52

I shower, swim, sail, canoe/kayak and even white water rafted in my contacts. It’s perfectly fine.

DickDewy · 26/12/2019 19:54

I wear mine all day. The first shower of the day is before I put them in but I will have another 2 with them in.

mymadworld · 28/12/2019 22:12

I swim in mine so certainly would t take them out to shower. Mine go in the minute I wake up and come out when I go to bed bar the odd weekend morning when I might wear my glasses. Never had any issues in 20+ years wearing lenses.

NichyNoo · 28/12/2019 22:20

I've swam and showered with lenses in since 2002.

SwimmingintheDeepBLUESea · 29/12/2019 22:36

Technically you shouldn't shower with contacts in, in case you get water in your eyes. HOWEVER I shower and swim in mine (can't see anything otherwise as very shortsighted), I'm just careful not to get water in my eyes.

concooktion · 31/12/2019 07:02

I don't have spare lenses and the thought of risking washing so much money down the drain Shock

Do you all wear disposables? Are the recommendations different for those? Maybe I should look into getting some for the gym.

You really aren’t risking losing money down the drain. For more than 20 years, I have worn a variation of daily and monthly lenses and bathed and showered in them almost daily. It isn’t an issue.

mymadworld · 31/12/2019 09:49

No I wear monthly ones and there are never going to just wash out - at worst you might get a sore eye and rub and push one out but I go swimming once sometimes twice a week and shower daily and this has literally never happened in 20+ years. Sop fretting about it and just carry on as if you weren't wearing them

SwimmingintheDeepBLUESea · 31/12/2019 13:31

At the moment I have daily ones but it was the same when I had monthly ones. The lenses aren't going to wash down the drain. The only risk is that you shouldn't mix contact lenses with water - so you just close your eyes to wash your face and carefully wash hair.

Of course the other option is take your lense fluid and case with you, shower with lenses in case, then put them back in.

SwimmingintheDeepBLUESea · 31/12/2019 13:35

Also if you get your lenses from an optician, they will usually provide a replacement, if something happens to one

8paws8legs · 31/12/2019 13:38

If you're worried about it just take your holder and some solution and take them out for 10 minutes then put them back in.

Llareggub · 31/12/2019 13:39

I do everything in mine, although I do take them out when I dye my hair...

Tableclothing · 31/12/2019 13:43

I've worn lenses virtually daily for over 20 years and they've never washed out of my eyes in the shower.

Tolleshunt · 31/12/2019 13:51

Aren’t you lot worried about that amoeba thing that can burrow into your eyes if you get water stuck under the lens? Losing a lens is a drop in the ocean by comparison....

Tableclothing · 31/12/2019 14:05

Aren’t you lot worried about that amoeba thing

Not really. It's very rare, more common in subtropical climates, in less developed countries and in people with weakened immune systems, apparently.

"The estimated rate of Acanthamoeba keratitis is 1 per 250,000 people in the United States, although rates vary among studies: from 1.65-2.01 per million population up to 1 per 10,000 people who wear contact lenses"

I use daily disposable as well, which I suspect helps reduce the risk.
