Morning exercise and eating!

If you go to the gym / run etc first thing do you eat anything before hand? I feel lightheaded if I don't but sick if I do!

I get up at 5:30 and have a smoothie after at about 7ish and I don't always have breakfast anyway
DP has a banana on the way there

RedTreehouse · 05/07/2019 12:33

I don't exercise in the morning any more but when I did I used to have breakfast after. I did notice a massive difference in energy on the odd occasion I'd gym or run later in the day, after eating. It was the best way to fit it in though so I just went with the flow and did what I could.

BusterTheBulldog · 05/07/2019 12:37

If I’ve got a race I’ll get up early and eat, if it’s just normal exercise I don’t bother. What about having something bigger to eat the night before maybe?

Bippertyboo2 · 05/07/2019 12:38

I go to the gym in the morning without eating anything; I feel sick if I do but I do wonder if I'd have a better work out if I fuelled myself first. I am considering having a 20g Protein yogurt first thing.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 05/07/2019 12:40

Yes, this! Need to go for a run at 7am Sunday and not sure when to eat. I'm really prone to getting a stitch as well, if i eat.

Also hydration, I wake up pretty dehydrated but don't want to drink loads before going for a run. Tried hydrating the night before, had to wee at 2am, still woke up dehydrated!

TigerCameForTea · 05/07/2019 12:42

Maybe I'll try a banana then.. I can't bare to get up any earlier than 5.30am as it is 😊

I have a coffee and a cereal bar. It's enough to put something in my stomach without me feeling adverse effects.

roundtable · 05/07/2019 12:44

Sometimes I have fruit or yoghurt instead of the bar.

AnnaNimmity · 05/07/2019 12:51

no, i just have coffee if I run very first thing. But I get up at 6 and run at 7 - I don't think I could even eat that early.

Pleasebeafleabite · 05/07/2019 12:52

I have a smoothie too works fine

Pleasebeafleabite · 05/07/2019 12:53

Sorry - a small smoothie beforehand

Pinkarsedfly · 05/07/2019 12:54

If I run in the morning I have a latte and a banana.

I’ve tried lots of different things and this works best.

LimitIsUp · 05/07/2019 12:54

A small banana beforehand for me

CountFosco · 05/07/2019 12:58

I know a lot of runners don't eat before their morning run. I swim in the morning and eat before, yogurt and fruit. I wake up starving though, can't function until I eat. And then I'm hungry again by 9.30am.

MoonNoodles · 05/07/2019 16:25

If I swim, I don't eat first.
If I gym, or do a class, I usually don't eat first but some days if I wake up feeling overly tired or a bit less energy I will usually have half a protein bar before going to the gym. Its enough to get my stomach something to start using but not so much I get sick.

I find if I eat before exercise I can feel nauseous so I tend to wait until after.

WatchingFromTheWings · 05/07/2019 17:06

I'm up at 6am, coffee straight away, get ready whilst having a second coffee, gym by 7. I'm usually having a protein shake around 9 whilst eggs are boiling. The only time I eat before a workout is if I'm doing a race then I'll have granola or porridge 2-3 hours before. I can't run/exercise on a full stomach.

carrie74 · 05/07/2019 17:08

I'm not great in the mornings, but if I'm going for a run (never more than 5k), I'd happily go on an empty stomach. When I've got a weights or circuits session, I always make sure I've eaten something beforehand, at least an hour before. Most days I have Greek yoghurt, muesli and berries.

Daisydoesnt · 05/07/2019 17:09

I run early (6 or 7ish) and always eat first - I mean about 20 minutes before I pull my trainers on. A couple of bananas and plenty of water is usual, but this morning i had a small tub of bircher muesli that I'd made the night before. Run for about 45 minutes and felt fine on it. Certainly better than running empty. I am convinced your body gets used to running with something in your tummy.

A friend who does ultra marathons says this too - he said on his last ultra they were handing out bacon sandwiches at the stop point and he just ran along eating it! That sounds pretty extreme to me!!

OccasionalNachos · 05/07/2019 17:17

A small slice of toast with peanut butter, or a cereal bar, works for me. 30 mins to 60 mins before beginning to exercise. I can run up to about 5 miles without eating anything but it’s better if I do. Over that distance I need something.

ChocOrCheese · 05/07/2019 18:01

I don't generally eat anything unless I am lined up for a strenuous PT session - in which case I have a banana and (if I ate particularly lightly the night before) a mini babybel.

ragged · 05/07/2019 21:52

cup of tea, bit of orange juice? Sometimes a few bites of something else, mostly I'm good for up to 90 minutes without calories, though.

emummy · 05/07/2019 22:32

I always eat breakfast of granola & yoghurt. For long runs on Sunday I get up an hour before to have it and find that works for me.

0ellenbrody0 · 14/07/2019 16:49

I always do my morning run fasted. Water if during the week (6:30 ish) or water and tea before Parkrun or Sunday long run. Any food and I feel v nauseous. Comfortable up to about 12k If I’m running in the morning.

onemouseplace · 14/07/2019 16:51

I have a small banana and one of those small yoghurt drinks - it's enough to give me a bit of energy without making me feel too full.

SinglePringle · 14/07/2019 16:52

I do morning spin classes and have a coffee and a banana about an hour beforehand. Can’t work out if I don’t. And I am ravenous afterwards.
