How many 'active minutes' do you do each week?

I'm attempting to do 500 plus minutes a week as started new exercise programme.

So that's over an hour a day of something. Today I've done yoga, weights, aqua aerobics.

I've just looked at my Fitbit stats and last couple of weeks was just over 500 minutes. I'm happy with that. I do 4 (ish) classes a week as well as school runs and I've got a pretty active job

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2019 19:03

Oh that's good. I'm attempting to bump myself from sedentary to active as sitting is having a horrible impact on my health (knees/hips)

Just checked my fitbit too. Ranges from 500 - 850. That's walking the school run when I can and classes most days at the gym. I'd class myself as very active so I think 500 mins a week from sedentary is quite a high target. It may be better for you to aim for 300 the 1st week, 400 the next etc. Or just go for the 500 and see how you feel. What you don't want to do is end up knackering yourself out the 1st week and dropping back to next to nothing.

SeaViewBliss · 26/06/2019 19:08

I’ve gone from barely any to 150 minutes a week which is the minimum recommended.

I am going to the gym 4 times a week and walking in between. Hoping to build up to 30 minutes every day.

maybenextmonth · 26/06/2019 19:34

I've just checked mine and I do around 400. I definitely thought it would be more than that so am going to try and increase that.

AnthonyCrowley · 26/06/2019 19:36

Between 700-1000. I get around 80 mins most weekdays biking to work and back.

Sarcelle · 26/06/2019 19:39

840 minutes a week. I have gone from being a real lazy Herbert to loving exercise.

AnthonyCrowley · 26/06/2019 19:41

I don't find either yoga or weights put my Garmin into active mins. Even an hour of bodypump may only get me half the class active time even though I'm dripping sweat.

Just done two hours of tennis though admittedly playing gently with a new tennis player and only got 19 mins in 2 hours. Confused

TheSmallAssassin · 26/06/2019 19:44

I wouldn't go from sedentary to over an hour a day, you risk injury (you need some rest days in there to let your body recover, even elite athletes do!) and it's going to be hard to sustain. It's really good to aim to be more active, but do it sensibly! My average is around 400 minutes a week at the mo, although I'm exercising 4 or 5 times a week, I'm driving to work more often than I should...

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 26/06/2019 19:44

I do a minimum of 1350 a week as that's the school run each day and my weekly bike ride. I usually walk an extra half hour each week day in addition to that. Weekends vary as to how much I walk. I don't drive so do about 30 miles per week walking and 11 miles cycling.

sessell · 26/06/2019 19:50

I hit 300 a week just with a basic daily walk to work and back (half hour each way). Don't discount walking - at a pace! Recently I've been averaging 500 a week, with a longer walk/ hike at the weekend.

HundredMilesAnHour · 26/06/2019 19:59

I do 900 on a bad week, over 2,000 on a good week. I go to the gym 6 days a week (doing weights and strongman stuff, HIIT and a little yoga) and I also walk (fast) at least 50km every week. It's taken me 12 months to build up to that level though. You need to go slowly, especially if you've been sedentary for a while, so you avoid injury. And make sure you eat well to support the extra exercise you're doing.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/06/2019 20:01

My average over the last year was 77 a day, so about just over 500 a week. That sort of doesn't surprise me as I run a lot, but it surprises me that it's not more as I am constantly on the go (I do 17k average steps a day)

However, as active minutes is based on heart rate, as you get fitter you'll clock fewer minutes for the same activity as your heart rate won't go as high as quickly. I do an hours circuits class and it sometimes only records 15-20 active minutes, despite working really hard, but because I run so much my cardio fitness is very good.

Apolloanddaphne · 26/06/2019 20:03

I appear to do around 600 each week I do no other exercise other than walking my dog twice daily and doing household chores.

AnthonyCrowley · 26/06/2019 20:32

Don't get anything for dog walking and I go quite briskly.

I have noticed recently not all my cycling commute counts some days so think it's true about how as you get fitter you have to work harder to get it to count.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2019 20:58

Ah, there's definitely a misunderstanding. My Fitbit counts 'active minutes' as walking over 30minutes - so I already do 300 a week with no difficulty at all just commuting/dog walking/one yoga class

The 200 extra I'm hoping to do is aqua aerobics (45 minutes twice a week) and 20 minutes twice a week lifting weights

Interesting to hear the vast range of activities your doing and I'm so shocked that different trackers aren't counting active minutes when you're playing tennis ShockShockShock

Yes, my heart rate (because I'm so unfit and very overweight) is CONSTANTLY in heart burn mode - it goes up to 120 with just movement like light walking

So basically even light strolls greater than 30 minutes count on my Fitbit

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2019 21:02

Actually this is my graph - as you can see I'm so unfit I'm constantly burning fat Hmm

How many 'active minutes' do you do each week?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/06/2019 21:15

Laurie you can change your settings so it records active minutes after 10 mins not 30. (I did this because my school walk is about 12 mins long and it was never clocking it)

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2019 21:35

You're right Blush - it is 10 minutes or more on mine

OP posts:
lljkk · 26/06/2019 21:39

Fitbit says 810 this last week... I know there's at least 80 minutes swimming + at least 10 more minutes cycling (to pool & back) to add on top. 900 this week.

AuntieStella · 27/06/2019 07:37

It wouid depend on what counts.

My Garmin logs the amount, based on rise to heart rate and tells me a figure for both moderate and gigorous.

Normal walking does not make my heart rate rise enough to be logged, even though my pace is brisk. Excluding that, it's about 300-500 minutes a week (mainly running)

SudowoodoVoodoo · 30/06/2019 07:40

I have a polar watch with heart rate. My last full week was 2d 4h or average 7:33 per day. I walk a lot doing things like the school run (it's short but does stack up!) plus structured exercise, although gentle pilates/ yoga barely register as my heart rate stays down in the 70-80 bpm.

300% of my daily activity level seems to be a mark of tiredness where I can barely stay awake in the evening, even more so when it's been largely from busying about rather than just a big run.

ferretface · 01/07/2019 08:53

My Fitbit records anything over 10 minutes and my usual is 500-800 minutes. It does capture dog walks as well as my walk to/from the station (only 12 mins or so but usually done at military march pace!). I usually run 3-5 days a week with gym classes 2-3 days a week plus dog walking/general activity.

If a lot of the minutes are walking minutes it's an attainable target. My best ever week was 1400 minutes but actually a lot of that was walking around New York (clocked up over 200 miles that week along with running!) so the intensity was quite low.

If your Fitbit does heart rate I would also look at time spent in cardio and peak zones -may be a better metric of true heart rate rising exercise. Although a dog walk takes me into fat burn zone to be honest I don't think it does much for fitness or fat loss etc though obviously good for general health.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/07/2019 15:56

Well last week I managed 404. I would say I'm feeling pretty 'active' if active = knackered Grin

I'm definitely sleeping better, averaging 7 hours now instead of my 6 and a half and that's making a difference to how I feel every day.
