Hi, I tried running again today after 2 months off.

It's still sore!

I'm so frustrated. It hurts just under my ankle bone on my left foot on the outside. I've seen osteo, accu and podiatry. It's on the outside of my foot.

Has anyone had this? What could it be and how can I get rid. TIA

Have you had an x-Ray?
I would see a sports physio too.

emummy · 02/06/2019 06:15

There's a tendinitis that gives pain in that area - personal I think? Second a sports physio, one that knows about running.

emummy · 02/06/2019 06:16

Not personal, peroneal. Sorry!

FATEdestiny · 02/06/2019 10:23

Do you run on pavements? The left-right slope of driveway kerbs gives me pain in a similar place. I'm much better running on flat surfaces.

Nowadays I either run on canal paths or bridalways, or if I have to do a road run then I try to run on the road surface instead of the pavements.

Delatron · 02/06/2019 20:40

Yes see a sports physio. If you are rolling over slightly on one ankle then that could indicate weakness/ tightness in the hips. Often ankle/foot injuries are due to weaknesses up the kinetic chain.

shortaris1 · 02/06/2019 21:41

Thanks all. Yes I'll see a running physio. Yes I run on pavements. I live in a city.

I deffo have tight hips too.

How old are you OP? I had similar issues (outside of one foot). Little did I know at the time, but I had early osteoarthritis of the hip making me run lop-sided.

palahvah · 02/06/2019 21:46

Not sure what type of pain it is - is it possible your shoe is rubbing?

shortaris1 · 02/06/2019 21:48

I'm 40 @thenightsky

I land on my toes if that helps anyone

Had to give up running 5 years ago due to arthritis in both hips and eventual hip arthroscopy to tidy up the cartilage damage from running. I feel your pain.

Haven't found anything else that makes me feel like running did. I go to the gym regularly now but not the same. No advice really, just sympathy

Branleuse · 02/06/2019 21:57

running is so high impact. Terrible for the joints and terrible for the pelvic floor.

i used to love running too, but cant do it now, which is a shame. I can do short periods on a treadmill, but youre going to have to find another exercise you love

shortaris1 · 02/06/2019 22:02

@branleuse I'm not ready to do that yet. I don't love anything the way I love running. I can pretend I do but I just dont.

I feel your pain but I am in my fifties so it is not worth the grief anymore. I swim now and I hate it!!!

shortaris1 · 02/06/2019 22:05

@Billy Swimming is dull as plus I have bad skin and am shit at it!

I completely get how you feel OP and don’t give up hope. You can come back from injury with guidance. You just need to get to the root of the problem and strengthen/ iron out any imbalances.

I injured my back a few years ago and thought I’d never run again. I was devastated. I’ve done two years of glute and hip strengthening, loads more stretching and foam rollering than I’ve ever done! But at the moment I’ve had nearly a year of injury free running.

thenightsky · 02/06/2019 22:07

Yep OP.... I was early 40s too. Please get checked out for hip arthritis. I kept on running and I wonder now if that contributed to my pain and disability now, 10 years later.

crummyusername · 02/06/2019 22:07

Stress fracture? Is it tender when you press it? I had something like this on my ankle a few years back, never really got to the bottom of what it was and it took 3 months or so to recover, in hindsight I reckon that's what it was. It did get better though!!

If I were you I'd go to GP and get referral for X ray, just to rule that out. And if you run and it hurts, stop straight away rather than carrying on to the end of the planned route or you could make it worse.

I feel your pain too... I've got an injury myself, haven't run in over two months, I'm missing it SO MUCH. Trying to keep fitness up in other ways so I can quickly get back into it once injury healed.

Singletomingle · 02/06/2019 22:09

Have you had your running style analysed? Are your trainers reasonably new and good quality? If not maybe get some new, differet trainers.

crummyusername · 02/06/2019 22:09

And could you use the injury time to do more strength work, which has got to be a good think for preventing future injury? I got a good book called strength training for runners.

shortaris1 · 02/06/2019 22:10

I'll call podiatry tomorrow as she did say they would xray if it didn't improve.

How do they check for hip arthritis @thenightsky

Delatron · 02/06/2019 22:16

Also, if you have a weak pelvic floor then you may have issues when running but running won’t cause those issues.

If you can’t run without issues in that area then you need to do some pelvic floor work.

Studies have also shown running actually strengthens bones. Lots of misconceptions about it being bad for the joints and the knees. This is only if your form is bad or you have imbalances and weaknesses. You need to be strong to run.

shortaris1 · 02/06/2019 22:21

Thanks @delatron I have had pelvic floor issues. No kids but a hell of a lot of use when I was young Grin

Are you in a gym or could you join one for a bit? Elliptical trainer trainer good for keeping up running fitness while you get injury sorted

shortaris1 · 02/06/2019 22:46

Thanks @Crummy I am in a gym. I just need to go! Starting again tomorrow as I've piled on weight.

crummyusername · 03/06/2019 07:53

I’ve been using elliptical trainer as it’s similar muscles to running plus BitGym app which gives you a workout to follow and scenery to look at
