What exercise do you do that's NOT running?

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 22/02/2019 22:25

So fed up of being overweight.
I know that I need to exercise more as well as eat less.
I currently swim and walk.
And contemplating getting back into yoga...
Any other ideas of what I can do to feel good?
Lots of my friends jog and bang on about all the 1/2 marathons they are doing but I can't run due to a knee injury.
I need some alternative exercise inspiration please?

i swim four times a week and do classes such as spin, zumba, boxercise. i hate running - unlike my boyfriend who loves it and runs miles every day! i also do yoga as it relaxes me and to strengthen my core and improve my posture.

PinkBuffalo · 22/02/2019 22:32

I am very unfit and just started exercise this year. I currently do 3 classes a week, spin, LBT & yoga.
I work full time and manage to fit these in. I can already feel a difference in my fitness levels and hope that I can keep on improving!
I can recommend all of them if that helps?

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 22:34

I do gym fit, body pump, body attack. I don't do running either as my knees wouldn't cope

clary · 22/02/2019 22:36

oh ok I came on to say swimming.

tbh I don't think you will lose weight swimming unless you really go for it and swim a long way.

Best way to lose weight us to eat less. Spinning is good?

HopeAndJoy16 · 22/02/2019 22:38

I go bouldering at a local climbing wall. I hate jogging but find this is a really good way to keep my mind stimulated whilst exercising. It's worth doing a beginners course to get the basics. It's great fun!

CountNaught · 22/02/2019 22:38

I have a bad foot and so I use the weight machines and the rowing machine.

FrangipaniBlue · 22/02/2019 22:39

Cycle, swim, weights in the gym, spinning, Pilates and fell walking

28282ooooh · 22/02/2019 22:42

Hot yoga - bikram and flow.

I'm a runner too Grin

Dohee · 22/02/2019 22:43

Pilates is brilliant particularly if you are injured. It is developed from physiotherapy actually.
I go to the gym (could you cycle/rowing machine for your cardio?) and then some gentle weights.

My gym gives you 5 one to one sessions with a personal trainer (PT). First one is assessing you, second is setting up your gym routine, third is nutrition, fourth is a follow up on the gym routine to see if you're ready to try higher weights etc. and 5th is to assess you 2 months in to see how you're doing.
If you have money to spare, a few PT sessions in a gym would be worth the money.

I also do all sorts of classes at my gym, Boxercise, yoga, pilates, LBT (legs bums & tums), ABT (abs bums & tums), HIIT, Zumba etc etc.

My local gym is brilliant.

Hecksonaplane · 22/02/2019 22:44

I have up running due to a bad knee but manage to play netball 2/3 times a week. I love it so much, it's never a chore

Dohee · 22/02/2019 22:44

If you can find a gym that isn't terribly busy, they're better. When I worked in the city it was like hamsters on a threadmill, everyone rushed, cramming classes into your lunch time etc.

ThursdayLastWeek · 22/02/2019 22:46

Low impact classes for my bad foot - body pump & spin at the gym.
Totally separate classical pilates mat class.
Crosstrainer st the gym when I want to recreate that solid cardio feeling I used to get from running,

CherryPavlova · 22/02/2019 22:50

Walking and swimming.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 23/02/2019 13:50

Cycle, swim, yoga and running

Slippershoes · 23/02/2019 13:54

I do kettle bells at home and sometimes I do a medium impact cardio YouTube video.

Greenteandchives · 23/02/2019 13:58

I do RPM, BodyStep classes on low impact options, Bodybalance Pilates and swimming.
Running was fine when I was younger but destroyed my pelvic floor. I miss it but won’t do it again.

AuntieStella · 23/02/2019 14:21

I'm a runner, but I'll shut up,about that!

I do Pilates and a resistance-band based general fitness class.

With a knackered knee, have you considered kayaking? It's good cardio if you paddle briskly (but you can start as gently as you like) and ll from the upper body, so no chance of aggravating a knee. It's good for the spirits to be on water. If nowhere local to you, it's a good holiday activity

CountFosco · 23/02/2019 14:27

I swim 4x a week (half an hour, 1km) and do yoga 3x a week (1h a day). Try and walk as much as possible on the yoga days. I don't like exercise that makes me sweaty (don't notice in the pool).

It might just be that you need to increase what you are doing but if you fancy doing something else look at classes offered in local gyms or take up a team sport.

CountFosco · 23/02/2019 14:29

DH cycles to work, that's fairly low impact but don't know if it would still aggravate your knee. Fitting exercise into your daily life is the best way to increase the amount you do.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 23/02/2019 14:30

Banned from running, not that I ever could, due to hip.

Airbike, rowing, free weights, swim, general flow stuff, bit of Crossfit within reason, used to do Pilates, yoga also breaks me

Hockneypool · 23/02/2019 14:37

Cycling is very good for dodgy knees as it’s low impact especially compared to running.

Yoga or Pilates is great for flexibility and strength.
Also look at leg exercises to support your knee.

Bloomburger · 23/02/2019 14:44

Spin
Boxing
Pilates
Body Balance
Resistance Training

No matter what you do. It's only 20% exercise, you need to sort your diet out.

BazingaBaby · 23/02/2019 18:19

I cycle to or from work every day (building up to both ways once I'm a bit more confident road cycling) and do 1 hr a week Clubbercise class. I think if you can find something you enjoy, you'll stick with it easier.

carrie74 · 23/02/2019 19:36

I do a mixture, but don't belong to a gym. See a PT fortnightly, circuits class once a week (my PT runs it at local leisure centre), yoga once a week, a bit of running sometimes, a bit of cycling sometimes, sometimes a swim, a game of tennis, badminton with the kids, Fitness Blender workouts at home, walking (have a couple of keen walking friends, so try to slot in some longer, 'proper' walks with them too).

My children are old enough to be left at home now, which has allowed me to up my exercise game. My Apple Watch has also been a real motivator.

Sweating and getting out of breath is quite important though (I know it's initially unpleasant, but now I feel cheated if I'm not covered in sweat at the end of a workout Grin).

AnnaMagnani · 23/02/2019 19:41

Am very unfit and also have bad knees which have limited me before.

Have done the Low Impact programme on Fitness Blender and am so much fitter, lost a stone am also eating a lot less and have moved on to another programme. My knees are also v happy.

You only need a mat and some hand weights - although I keep having to buy new weights as I'm getting better and better Smile

I've quickly got the hang of what to substitute when moving on to a non-low impact programme - but my quads and hamstrings are so much stronger now I often just have a go anyway and my knees so far are holding up SmileSmile
