What exercise do you do that's NOT running?

So fed up of being overweight.
I know that I need to exercise more as well as eat less.
I currently swim and walk.
And contemplating getting back into yoga...
Any other ideas of what I can do to feel good?
Lots of my friends jog and bang on about all the 1/2 marathons they are doing but I can't run due to a knee injury.
I need some alternative exercise inspiration please?

Weight lifting also makes you look better as you lose weight 😁

I'm intrigued about the bouldering. Do you have to have a natural body-type to be good at it? I have no upper body strength and I am fairly tall and - although not overweight - I am heavy. I like the look of it though and we have a bouldering 'gym' near us. I have taken DC there and I've watched. Does learning technique help?

Sorry for the hijack OP

underover being tall is good for climbing! I'm 5'6 and overweight, no upper body strength (at the moment anyway). I sometimes struggle because some of the routes are set for taller men, and although there's normally a way round it a bit of height helps! There's basic techniques which make it easier to climb and the gym probably runs beginner or taster sessions to teach you. But you can have fun and get fit with minimal technique- i got in good shape spending a long summer doing lots of climbing and I'm not that good at it at all.

Badminton, spinning... and attempting to do more dance classes. Actually after years of going through periods of doing lots of exercise but not losing any weight (including a "career break" as a full time dog walker), I thought I was maybe too old to lose weight (in late 30s). However, it really is true that you just need to eat less. I started eating breakfast, a pret soup and protein pot for lunch and skipping dinner and started losing 1lb a day! I've put a bit on again since but will go back to it as I felt great and it also gave me more energy.

CrossFit is amazing. I had lots of sessions with my PT in quick succession when I started. Mos I still see him but do my own thing on other days. I have never felt so good or so included at a gym before. Everyone is so welcoming and you scale it so you can do the exercises. I can’t recommend it enough.

babysharkah · 25/02/2019 19:15

I have seriously dodgy knees - cartridge trimmed in both from skiing injuries - and I HATE running. HIIT and circuits at the gym under instruction has changed the way I think about exercise, the exercises are body weight and mostly what a physio would tell you to do for dodgy knees. I love it. Have lost weight but more than that I am strong and fit and my knees are less dodgy. I've lost a ton of inches.

I wouldn't recommend it without professional supervision though.

CatandtheFiddle · 25/02/2019 19:34

Cardio: what about rowing? Or a spin class? You need to be pushed & get out of breath & sweaty.

Or, you could look at serious strength & resistance training. Pop over to the Weights Room it's not about body weight & losing it and there are threads there with recommendations for strength & resistance training programmes.

Best to see an exercise specialist: sports physio and/or personal trainer to get you started.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 25/02/2019 19:37

Body Attack, Body Pump, Body Combat and HIIT for me.

I find that you need to try various things to find what you enjoy. I wouldn't do Zumba if you paid me. I only do spin if there is literally no other options. There's a lot of trial and error.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 25/02/2019 19:59

Bodypump and running here. Bodypump helped me lose two stone (along with some diet adjustments). It was slow and steady though. DH has dodgy knees so switched from running to cycling, which he really enjoys now.

CleverKnot · 25/02/2019 20:25

run + cycling, swim, walk, kayak, skate, haul buckets of water & bags of wood.
Don't like activity that involves loud pop music, fixed routines, slow motion (like yoga). Am terrible at ball sports.
I'm probably do myself serious harm with weights.

I like ceilidhis. I'd do that again if I had a gang of friends to go with.

I belong to a gym that does group personal training, so essentially classes cut with very limited numbers, I love it. I do a mix of outdoor boot camp (flipping tyres, sprints, really intense army type stuff), corrective exercise, metafit which is HIIT, circuits and weightlifting, which I love. It’s really social and I’ve made some cracking friends. I got 4 times a week. I’m carrying 3 different injuries including knee injury, but I’ve been able to scale up from low impact to really high impact stuff as I’ve got loads stronger (think box jumps, tuck jumps etc).
I also boulder and absolutely love it, try to fit that in weekly with the kids and weekly with a friend for a more intense session.

Walking is a fab way to keep fit and lose weight. Keep the pace meaningful and make it part of your everyday. Listen to some music / a podcast or audible - just keep it consistent. Every. Single. Day. Sounds like you enjoy swimming too, so factor that in a few times a week. Weight training is important. It keeps your metabolic rate higher for longer after you have finished working out. Hence it is good for weight loss. More than that though, it strengthens your bones which protects your future frame against osteoporosis. If you don't want to join a gym, there are plenty free workouts on Pinterest.

On a Friday and Saturday night I fill a large glass object with liquid. I then place all four fingers on one side of said object and my thumb on the other. Raise with my right arm until the glass object is level with my mouth and tilt head back, this stretches and tones the tendons on your inner arm and underneath your chin. Put glass object down and replace with more liquid. Repeat 30 times.

HIIT at home.
Weights & Kettlebells at home - youtube - either Bodyfit by Amy or Fitness Blender, sometimes HASFit.
Youtube dancing vids by Popsugar.

Swimming.
Yoga & Pilates.
I want to get back to Body Combat at the gym, but life keeps getting in the way!

TeachesOfPeaches · 08/03/2019 06:55

Not sure when jogging became running

Margot33 · 08/03/2019 07:01

I can't run either because of my knee and foot. I tried cycling for a few months, but it was a hiit dvd that really worked. I use the DVD 5 times a week.
