I'm doing my first park run this Saturday

And I am ridiculously excited, and quite nervous. I even went out and bought myself new sports socks today, not sure they will help me much! I started running at the beginning of June - not actually C25K, but along very similar lines - and have gone from a very, very unathletic person to being able to run 5k, which I find frankly amazing. Anyone else parkrun-ning this Saturday in the South West?

Just wanted to say good luck and you'll love it. If it's anything like my local one, the atmosphere is awesome and I regularly marshall the course.

WingingWonder · 12/09/2018 20:12

I’m thinking about this too!
We do the kids one as a family, but I’ve never actually run 5k, will they be marked if I walk some of it and the last person is back late?

Sorry10 · 12/09/2018 20:14

Good luck
They are great fun
I'm no fast runner ( probably 1 of the slowest) but I don't care . Everyone is so nice and encouraging I really recommend park runs it's a free way of keeping fit/ exercise seriously no excuse.

Sorry10 · 12/09/2018 20:17

Winging wonder
They are not marked but you see the route before you start and they always have someone at the back so you are never last . Don't forget your barcode so you get a time .

Hairytangerine · 12/09/2018 20:18

Do you actually need a barcode or can you just go along?

fruitpastille · 12/09/2018 20:23

You can do the run without a bar code and be an 'unknown' runner. At the finish they give you a little card with a number on which you then hand in to another volunteer who will then scan your bar code. If you don't have one then you can memorise the number on the little card then look up the results later online and see the corresponding time for your number if you scroll through.

Daisydoesnt · 12/09/2018 21:15

Thank you all for your good luck wishes! I am never going to be a fast runner, but I am so looking forward to taking part.

Fruitpastille it takes a minute or two register on the parkrun website and you can then print your barcode off yourself if you have a printer at home/ work. So you could even register Friday night and still go on Saturday with your barcode if you wanted to.

Yes I've got a barcode, just answering PP Grin Good luck, there are lots of different speed runners, some v fast and some who walk part of the way. You can also order fancy plastic bar code cards which are nice if you get into it.

Daisydoesnt · 12/09/2018 21:33

Sorry fruitpastille I got in a muddle who asked about the barcode.

Well done for getting this far and good luck on Saturday! I'm sure you will love it.

The parkrun family in incredibly welcoming. You will never be last and will get Cheers wherever you are.

Enjoy it!!

Sorry10 · 12/09/2018 23:14

Let us know how you got on Smile

AuntieStella · 13/09/2018 06:46

Have fun!

I'll be Parkrunning, but not in the SouthWest, and WingingWonder no they really, really don't mind how long it takes. I volunteer as TailWalker frequently, and it really is fine to walk the whole way, in practice many people try jogging a bit but it's not a requirement. The back is usually the nicest part of a Parkrun!

Daisydoesnt · 13/09/2018 08:20

Auntie Stella the back is definitely where I will be so that’s good! I am determined to run the whole way if I can, so I am going to start really slowly otherwise I know I will run out of puff. I will come back on Saturday and let you know how it went. Thank you all again

I love parkrun! It's so inclusive and everyone is super friendly. Just enjoy and don't forget your barcode!

Nesssie · 13/09/2018 08:23

Turned up to my first ever parkrun 2 years ago, alone, unfit and shitting myself!
I’ve met some great friends, who I run with 3 times a week and am doing my first half marathon soon!!

Parkrun is the best place to start out as you can never be last, and everyone is so supportive.
Good luck!

BitOutOfPractice · 13/09/2018 08:27

I love ParkRun. Everyone who does parkrun loves Parkrun. It’s an organisation with no downside!

I live about 25 metres from the start of my parkrun!

Iblinkedandiamold · 13/09/2018 20:55

Good luck.
I'm doing my first park run on Saturday too. I am training for the woman's mini marathon. Problem is I don't run. I do Boot camp twice a week. The instructor makes us run and i kinda trot along. Then i come home and eat all the biscuits in the house. Grin

Sinkingfeeling · 14/09/2018 07:21

Enjoy! I did my first parkrun 4 weeks ago after graduating from C25k. It was hard, but the sense of achievement afterwards was amazing. I’m annoyed I can’t do parkrun this week because I’m working!

givemushypeasachance · 14/09/2018 13:42

Well done all first time parkrunners! At the pre-run briefing they usually ask who has milestone runs to mark, who's a "tourist" from another area visiting the parkrun, and who is doing their first time. So you should get a welcome round of applause before you start! If you're confused about any aspect of anything don't be afraid to ask the run director (in blue and white vest) or any of the volunteers (in yellow hi-viz). I've found most fellow runners are also more than happy to help with questions too like double checking how many laps the course is or where the closest loos are!

Daisydoesnt · 14/09/2018 13:55

thank you mushypeas, and everyone else. I am such a worrywart I even went to the park in question last Sunday, walked round and sussed out where to park and where the loos are! Really excited about tomorrow, good luck to all those fellow newbies :0)

I’ve just parked up at my local Parkrun - I “graduated” C25K at the end of June and, apart from a month off in August, I’ve done a Parkrun every Saturday. I absolutely love it! Good luck Daisy let us know how you get on Smile. Have a great Parkrun everyone.

OhtheHillsareAlive · 15/09/2018 09:26

I'm thinking about doing Park Run - there are about 2 near me (one along a seaside rom which feels nice), but my current form on the treadmill is that I'd probably take about 45 minutes to do 5K (I do strength training rather than fast running!)

Is that time just too embarrassing?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 15/09/2018 10:47

Not at all OhtheHills. Have a look at the latest results for your local Parkrun that should give you an idea of where you’d be. You’d probably find, too, that you’ll speed up running with other people. Go for it!

PoisonousSmurf · 15/09/2018 10:50

I've been a Parkrun member for over a year, but I only ever ran once!
I think I picked a bad day and a difficult route as it was very hot (even in the morning), and it was a hilly run!
It took me two hours to stop looking bright red!
But apart from that, everyone was very nice and the cake at the end was worth it Grin.
I think I'm more of a bad weather runner as I like running in the rain. Not the sun!
