I'm doing my first park run this Saturday

And I am ridiculously excited, and quite nervous. I even went out and bought myself new sports socks today, not sure they will help me much! I started running at the beginning of June - not actually C25K, but along very similar lines - and have gone from a very, very unathletic person to being able to run 5k, which I find frankly amazing. Anyone else parkrun-ning this Saturday in the South West?

"I'd probably take about 45 minutes to do 5K (I do strength training rather than fast running!)

"Is that time just too embarrassing?"

No, not at all. You'd be very unlikely to be the last in at 45 mins. Tails usually expect to be in between 55-75 minutes, depending on terrain and whether there's a jolly group of walkers. Sometimes it's faster, but I've just had a flick back through my stats and I have only ever one been under 45 when being Tail (and I remember that wet day when turnout was unusually low and there were no walkers)

How did everyone get on today?

ContessasGulagSpaDay · 15/09/2018 12:11

How'd it go op?

My ambition when I first did parkrun 2 years ago was to get around without having to stop - I went today and am hopeful of a PB Grin I'm still not fast but much better than I was! You can do it Star

I did it!!! And as you all said, it was really fun, encouraging and welcoming. Lots of cheers and shouts of encouragement all along the way. I started really slowly as planned (lots of small children overtaking me on the first lap!!) but managed to run the whole way and even saved a bit so my last lap was my fastest. My husband clocked me at 31.39 although I know my "official" time will be a good 10-20 secs slower than that. I really, really enjoyed it and will go again in a fortnight.
Two questions for you experienced runners. I found running laps surprisingly boring (!!) I hadn't anticipated that. Other than think about my form, what do you think about or do you just try and get in the zone?? And very embarrassingly just as i pulled up I suddenly did a tiny wee. (yes I am a middle aged lady). I had "gone" before the start and I wasn't even aware i wanted to go. Has that happened to you?? Any words of wisdom? Luckily my husband passed me my spare jumper which I could wrap round my waist, although i don't really think anyone would have noticed/ cared.

That's brilliant well done! That's a fantastic time too I did 31.51 today and I struggled! I was hoping to get under 30 but it just wasn't happening no idea why! Hope you keep going, I've only done 3 so far but I love the atmosphere Smile

Daisydoesnt · 15/09/2018 12:21

Oh well done Butternut - I will be aiming for a time in 31 territory so you have already done what I'd like to! It was quite warm this morning wasn't it? I can't imagine what it was like in the peak of the heatwave. Too hot for me.

I have wee issues too op. Pelvic floor exercises helped, and black exercise leggings are your friend....

BibiThree · 15/09/2018 14:37

Well done! That's a fantastic time.
Look at other Parkruns in your area, some will be one large loop or an out and back. Maybe less boring than several smaller laps.

Thatstheendofmytether · 15/09/2018 14:39

I really want to go to one I just don't have the courage to go alone, keep trying to get someone to go with me but haven't succeeded. I haven't been running for ages so think I would be walking most of the way. Does anyone do that? I don't want to be the only one walking.

Iblinkedandiamold · 15/09/2018 16:09

I did the park run with a friend. We strolled around and I was a little frustrated. I don't run but I would've walked fast.
She hasn't done much excersise so it was great for her to complete it.
Took us nearly an hour. 56 mins.
Still it's better than sitting on the sofa.
OP, I have a weak pelvic floor. I'm not in my 40s yet but I've had that problem for a long time. It's why I don't run. Blush

I've just done my first park run today. Having finished C25k in May. It was great everyone very friendly. Even better there was a cafe so could have post run cup of tea! Definitely going again.

OhtheHillsareAlive · 15/09/2018 16:30

Thank you everyone for your reassurance. In awe of the 31 minute times. Great work!

Sorry10 · 15/09/2018 16:59

Well done !!!
And remember doesn't matter how slow you go still lapping everyone on the couch .

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 15/09/2018 17:12

Well done that's fab!

I signed up weeks ago but due to one thing or other I haven't made it along yet!

PostNotInHaste · 15/09/2018 20:59

Well done !! I’ve been going for nearly a year an your time is around my PB which only happened a few weeks ago and is a distant memory at momemtnas had op and first one back today,

I always run with a sanitary towel in just in case. A good play list on phone helps me but ours isn’t laps, it’s a circuit. We have people who walk all the way at ours, my DC did when I made them do it ! You also see people doing C25K app whilst going round.
