Trail shoes - recommendations please

Road shoes are Saucony - they’re my second pair of this brand and I quite like them!

I currently have a pair of cheap Nikes as I rarely run trails, but over the summer will be doing a lot more off road so need a decent pair.

I have tried Ons and didn’t like them. Asics never fit my wide feet.

I’ve looked online at Saucony Koa - would love to hear any reviews! Or would I be better sticking to something more trail based like Salomon?

Sadly my local running shop only had Asics and Ons trails so I’m going to have to order online, try at home and return if they don’t fit. Not ideal....!

Thanks Smile

Let's face it you NEED different trainers for different terrains and different times of year and different distances etc so you'll just have to buy the lot Grinthat's what I tell my OH...

Currently in peregrines training for an Ultra and I love them but I have a lot of Innov8 stuff and ready to try their trail shoes as my peregrines are a bit knackered now- I do a lot of Trail events in the Lake District and most people wear Innov8, Salamon, Saucony or Hoka

SandunesAndRainclouds · 13/05/2018 20:21

apples You must know me!!!! One for mud, one for dry rocks right?

I’m taking myself off for the day next week to have a proper try on, no children or DH breathing down my neck.

Definitely need 2 pairs of trail shoes for different terrain. They're cheaper than road shoes, hence even more excuse to have 2.

applespearsbears · 13/05/2018 20:43

I love a bit of kit Wink

SandunesAndRainclouds · 13/05/2018 20:49

You are a bad influence!

I use Brooks (ghost/ glycerin) for road running and innov8s for trail- have run up to half marathons in My innov8s. I also have wide feet/ bunions. I did try the cascadia but after about 4miles they really hurt the balls of my feet.

applespearsbears · 13/05/2018 20:54

Don't get me started on socks I'm on the eternal hunt for a pair that don't feel like hot water bottles!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 13/05/2018 21:02

apples have you tried Decathlon socks?

I don’t get on with Brooks roads, so hadn’t considered their trails.

I'm a huge fan of many many things from Decathlon, but I just cannot get on with their socks.

My favourites at present are Stance

applespearsbears · 13/05/2018 21:23

I've tried neither Decathlon or Stance thank you I'll take a look. My current favourite are Injinji but I could still use thinner

Oi you lot! I’d just convinced myself I didn’t need trail shoes to do some off road runner this summer!

I’m socks: hilly mono skin are cool and lovely. Worth every penny.

dangermouseisace · 15/05/2018 17:14

badgerlady it depends what you are running on. Around my way trails are mud in winter and hard packed paths/grass in summer. I used my trail shoes the other day and wished I’d worn my road shoes as I’m sure I had the imprint of the lugs on the balls of my feet! It’s road shoes until the ground softens up.

Socks- I like Nike single skin anti blister and they’re relatively cheap as come in a 2 pair pack. And hilly twin skin but they’re too expensive to have lots of.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 15/05/2018 19:24

So the old trails are getting their last outing this week for a Beach run then I MUST make a decision.

I’m having a few niggles in my right leg which is annoying me. I did 5km on Sunday morning in my Saucony Freedoms and it didn’t bother me for the first time in a couple of week. Went out later for a 7 miler in Hurricanes and leg was sore, still hurting now. Can’t help wondering if it’s a shoe issue 🤔

Could well be, only takes a little foot trouble to trigger bigger problems

SandunesAndRainclouds · 15/05/2018 21:54

I’ve managed to get in with Physio tomorrow. I’ll see what she says.

Or as DD says.. fizzyoyo Confused

Could be shoes. I didn’t realise how worn both my pairs were until I bought new ones (shins had been hurting). I feel like my road shoes are tiny trampolines and shins are fine. I’ve started, for the first time, to log which shoes I’m using on Strava cos you can set an alert for x number of miles. Good luck at fizzyoyo

applespearsbears · 16/05/2018 16:49

@dangermouseisace that's a fab Strava tip I'll set that up

@SandunesAndRainclouds Grinfizzyyoyo!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 16/05/2018 20:56

Fizzyoyo has told me not to run.

It could be a combination of issues - but possibly a stress response or fracture. Maybe even muscle shearing from where it attaches to the bone.

So I’ve got some exercises to do over the next few days and back early next week. If they’ve worked then we can safely assume muscular, if not I’ll be off to GP to request X-ray. Gutted.

Sorry to hear that SandunesAndRainclouds fingers crossed the exercises do their job and its nothing more serious. Chin up, just means you've got more time to work on core exercises :)

dangermouseisace · 17/05/2018 07:56

Pants sandunes fingers crossed that it’s muscular not stress fracture!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 17/05/2018 20:35

I really hope it is muscular and it heals very quickly. I’m so fed up and it’s only been a day!

applespearsbears · 17/05/2018 21:03

Tape it up, it's amazing really helps recovery

CalmConfident · 17/05/2018 23:13

My road shoes are saucony (hurricanes I think) but my trails are Brooke’s Cascadia which I really like.

Hope you are rested and back out pounding the trails again soon.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 18/05/2018 18:46

I am resting... well, if you call decorating a lounge and looking after my 4 DCs resting!

It was really sore to walk on, but has improved as the day has gone on. I’m doing loads of calf stretches and I’ve dug a resistance band out to use. Fingers crossed it works!
