I've decided it is today- more because I would have to walk the last bit (pick kids up from school towards the end of run) and can't carry extra layers to put on ....is there an official rule with it? I know the last snowy week I couldn't go cos of icy paths but wondering if there is a temperature it's advised to not run outside at?

It's Ice rather than cold that stops me. Same with dark nights. I'd rather not turn my ankle on Ice. And it's not safe where I live to run alone after dark.

pinkhorse · 26/02/2018 14:51

As long as there's no ice there's no excuse not to run

HelenaJustina · 26/02/2018 14:54

I ran this morning, about -2/3 with the wind chill... no such thing as too cold, but really icy underfoot would slow me down a bit.

Thirtyrock39 · 26/02/2018 15:00

Damn it I was hoping you'd all assure me I was being very sensible avoiding my run and not just lazy and scared of the snow!!!

I always think that 'its too cold' is a good excuse not to go for a run. I've used it myself in the past when I was starting to run to loose weight, but now that I run because I like it, its only ice and deep snow that stops me.

SandLand · 26/02/2018 15:13

I don't think it's the temp that is a problem with your plan, but the walking home at child speed afterwards that could mean you get very cold. But then it's been a long time since I tried to run in anything below about 15C - I'm not in the UK. I give up around 35C.

lljkk · 26/02/2018 17:18

I can run confidently when plenty of ice around or even pure mud... discovered this with my run club recently. Others picking their way gingerly & I went at full pelt. I've have magnificent ankles & don't fear falling.

I imagine I could get down to about 0deg. F when the air is just too cold to breathe ime Had a great run today over icy snowy fields.

emummy · 26/02/2018 17:24

My record is -6! I had to put my buff over my mouth for the first bit to warm the air, then it was fine. It's the ice that's a problem, but I have bought some yak trax as was fed up of struggling. Might need to test them out this week. The snow is ok though, just wear my trail shoes for that.

ShowOfHands · 26/02/2018 17:27

I went out today and it was -3. I had my buff over my mouth for a while too!

I only don't run if there's ice.

CatsGoPurrrr · 26/02/2018 18:29

I agree with pp. I ran this morning. If it's snowy/icy on the pavement l, I run on grass. If it's been snowing, it's fun Smile

werekitty · 26/02/2018 19:17

I have ice trax, so I have no excuse even if there is ice and I don't do Bambi impressions. If it's crisp and cold I love running, just hate running in the rain.

Thirtyrock39 · 28/02/2018 09:17

Right i made the mistake of skiving my run on Monday when it was cold and now there's snow and I have to run today and so I'm going to go for a very slow 5k trying to avoid the icy paths

I am pondering what route to run... I dont' worry about ice but don't want soaking wet feet, either!

BrassicaBabe · 28/02/2018 13:46

I'm new to running. I've not broken my "3x per week" since I started C25K 1st Dec. Including Xmas week! We've got standing snow here. Lots of it. And I run on rural roads. So I've not missed Monday and Wednesday Sad

gussyfinknottle · 28/02/2018 13:56

I don't mind running in rain (good job, where I live) but won't run in dark or in icy conditions.

Bythepath · 28/02/2018 13:59

I don't run in the very cold. I have done a few times and breathing in the freezing air has really hurt my chest. I am however prone to chest infections. It is sad as I am looking at the glorious snow covered hills (I only trail run) but not worth it for me.

Thirtyrock39 · 28/02/2018 15:35

Well had one little tumble but managed 6k was very slow but actually quite enjoyed it and avoiding the ice made it quite an enjoyable obstacle course
Def easier than running in driving rain

My run today was great, about 4.5 miles. The snow is so dry it didn't get my feet wet. Only one even slightly slippy stretch. I wore sunglasses & a fleece neckbuff so could cover all skin when the wind whipped up & keep my eyes open; but there were fogging problems with the glasses! I ended up uncovering my chin to deal with that.

Much noticed it was colder than I am used to. Wore a hat the whole way which is not my usual.

tortelliniforever · 28/02/2018 17:26

Between September and May.

SandLand · 28/02/2018 18:14

If I go running tomorrow I'll be taking a balaclava, a jacket and possibly shorts over my tights.

If it's icy I'll play safe and do an indoor cardio session in the gym instead

lljkk · 01/03/2018 09:35

I (again) highly recommend sunglasses. To deal with the blowing drifts. Make sure you can cover all skin if required.

hohum, after 2 days of running on snow+frozen I'm swimming today. Run again tomorrow. :)

ohfortuna · 01/03/2018 10:06

Absolutely lljkk
I never ever run without my wraparound shades 😎
Getting the rain and wind in your eyes is Horrid 🤤and of course you gotta protect those peepers from the sun when it comes out🌞
I remain undecided about today's run.....🤔
Who else is going out today 😄

ohfortuna · 01/03/2018 10:08

I would like to swim but that involves cycling to the pool and I really don't fancy biking in this weather 🤤
