Well done mammy It won't be long until you are sub 30. Running longer distances than you are used to would be my tip, makes you faster over shorter distances Grin

Welcome back HRH

So, I ran my Magic Mile yesterday (not pleasant but managed just over 8 minutes) and worked out my pace/timings using Jeff's calculator. It came out really similar to another run walk method I saw which was based on your 5k PB. So tomorrow will be my first attempt at Jeffing. Will be very strange walking when I'm not used to it and don't need to! But if it stops me picking up injury it will be worth it.

mammymammyIRL · 18/11/2017 08:23

how to work this without offending anyone - when I run and end up walking a few metres I feel like I've failed and my aim is always to complete my distance by running the whole lot , so with that in mind does jeffing feel like failing or is it ok because you've gone out with that mindset? Confused

Thanks purple!

I’ve no idea what Jeffing is but an 8 minute mile is awesome. I’ll have some of that please!

Purplerunner · 18/11/2017 09:10

Well mummy that is what I'm worried about. That I will feel like a plonker walking after only 3 or 4 minutes. When I don't need to. But if that is what I need to do to get round a marathon I will give it a shot! See how it goes tomorrow.

Thanks HRH but as my friend can churn out under 7 minutes miles for a 10k and even manage 6 minutes, I feel like a slow, lumbering thing in comparison. Should probably give myself a break Grin

Purplerunner · 18/11/2017 09:11

mammy stupid auto correct

mammymammyIRL · 18/11/2017 09:58

purple 8 min mile is bloody amazing. Do update to tell us how you find it on longer runs

mammy I'm jeffing, and no offence taken! I don't think of it as failing, insee it as conserving my energy to ensure I go the full distance. I'm doing London, and will be jeffing the full thing.

mammymammyIRL · 18/11/2017 10:39

loudestroar I need to study this!!

mammy if you're on Facebook, have a look at a page called Girls that Jeff

londonmummy1966 · 18/11/2017 12:46

Go Jeffers - I rarely feel a plonker walking on a training run as no one knows how far you've run before you start to walk. My first "race" on run walk was the Royal Parks and I did run solidly for the first 15 minutes. It wasn't an issue as lots of people had used their walk run training plan and so there was always someone else walking. It was a bit annoying at the Great South though as people kept telling me "you can do it" whenever I stopped running - I know it was well meant but...

I imagine that a lot of people will walk run the London Marathon though so I wouldn't worry about it - as they say no matter how fast you're going you'll always be overtaken by the back end of a pantomime cow. Grin

LoudestRoar · 18/11/2017 13:46

I'm having Walk/Run is all part of the plan printed on the back of my running top dor the marathon. (Also, This is a 5k, right) Grin

TriGirl007 · 18/11/2017 19:35

It’s interesting the psychology of run/walk I struggle to get going again after I walk Grin so I tried to slow down generally on my longer runs which is paying off with fastest shorter runs now.
Did 9k whilst daughter at her club this morning with a sprint at the end as I was running lateSmile

mammymammyIRL · 19/11/2017 06:27

I'm on Facebook- will do that now loudest

LoudestRoar · 19/11/2017 07:13

I have 6.5 miles on my plan today. Would it be crazy to try for 7? My last few weekend runs were 4.5 miles. It's silly, but my longest run to date is 6.59 miles, and I want to beat that distance, but don't want to mess up my marathon training.

HRHPrincessMegan · 19/11/2017 08:24

Go for it loudest. It definitely won’t mess up your training and will give you a great psychological boost.

I’ll be doing an epic 2k this morning! I’m accompanying DS1 at the junior park run. Yesterday I ran 3m at a steady pace of 9min mile then took a breather and a drink and then ran a single mile at 8.30 min pace. I really want to get to 8 minutes. My bootcamp trainer recommended that I jog 10 mins to warm up then do 1 min sprint/1 min jog for 12 mins followed by 5 min jog and then repeat with the 1 min intervals and cool down with 5 jog. He recons that’ll improve my speed. I’ll try in next week.

LoudestRoar · 19/11/2017 14:15

Did it! Feel good, although afterwards I was walking, and felt something pop in my foot. Was painful at the time, but seems ok now, just a bit swollen

londonmummy1966 · 19/11/2017 14:48

Loudest thanks for that tip - I've joined the Facebook page and found someone I know on it so I've DM'd them to see if they'd like to run walk sometimes.

Had a good run this morning 15km with some big hills but at a similar pace to the very flat 16km I did last week so feeling fairly happy.

randomsabreuse · 19/11/2017 15:05

5.6 mile trail race today. Really fun. Averaged about 11 minute miles with some queues for stiles and up one hill.

I don't find run walk works for me other than up hills - probably because we have so many hills that a fixed schedule would have me walking down the nice hills and running up the horrid ones. I do sets of 8 x 6 steps to get up the nastiest hills - try to run for 2 8s then walk one 8x4 steps and repeat until the end is in sight which works for me.

Have just broken 30 minutes for my "easiest" local Parkrun - some way to go on the two trail ones though! Would love to aim for a 1 hour 10k but there are no even vaguely flat 10ks until beyond my planning window at the moment so continuing with running longer and slower plus weekly speed work.

LoudestRoar · 19/11/2017 15:34

You're welcome londonmummy1966 Glad you found someone GrinI

BusterTheBulldog · 20/11/2017 14:05

Am also going to look up jeffing. I’m another that often feels like walking is failing (I do it though!!!). Managed to do 20 miles total last week, nothing longer than a 6 which is a bit of a pain though. Hoping to do an 8.5 at the weekend, I found a good new route by getting lost a while ago so keen to do that ‘properly’.

Thank you for the advice to run an extra session per week-definitely feeling the benefit!

HalleLouja · 20/11/2017 14:20

So after smashing my previous HM a few weeks ago I then completely smashed the new PB and managed under 2 hours and then some. So am still pretty pleased with myself. So I started this autumn with a PB around 2.09 and now its just under 1.53.

Buster walking is not failing. My friends jeffed around a HM in good time seeing as they were unable to train due to injury.

HRH apparently 1 minute sprints are great training they blinking hurt. Also do some longer intervals around 400 to 700 m. Plus some hill training.

HRHPrincessMegan · 20/11/2017 20:38

Halle - I. AM. IN. AWE.

What is your secret? Is it interval training?

BusterTheBulldog · 21/11/2017 05:12

Awesome work Halle!!

LoudestRoar · 21/11/2017 07:25

Halle I'll have what you're having! Grin
