I did the first run today, it was quite tough Blushjust looking for some reassurance and encouragement really. I have a tendency of not sticking to things/making excuses and would love to see myself get fitter over time.. motivation/tips/stories needed!

Thanks x

Just chipping in as a c25k graduate running my third 10k later today. I only took up running in January 2016 and while I'm utterly shit at it, I enjoy it, and I do it!!!!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 28/05/2017 10:02

Good luck with the 10K, Everyone!

I've got my first official one tomorrow. If I get round in under 1h20 I'll be happy but if it's longer than that I'm still going to be pleased with myself.

grannycake · 28/05/2017 12:24

Keep going Pennina and repeat a session if you need to. I run down a cycle track on a bypass and the first week I struggled to make it from 1 lampost to the next This morning I ran all the way down that section (Wk4 Day1) - you will do it if you keep trying and I have found it surprising how quickly the fitness builds up. Still can't imagine running for 30 mins+ though

Zohz123 · 30/05/2017 09:49

Hi guys! Just popped on the thread to see what was going on. Not running because I'm fasting but it's all I can think about. I'm contemplating just going out for 15 minutes or so (not following the plan) to keep my strength up. But I'm also worried because no food or water for 20 hours! I'm itching to get back into it. Will start again at Week 5 I think

Running 25k??? I can't imagine.

I did 20 mins non stop on Sunday. It was okay. I didn't enjoy it. V hard.

Today it goes back to 8 mins running, 3 mins walk, 5 mins running, 3 mins walk, 8 mins running, 5 cool down.

Why?

Then next run is 25 mins non stop.

What is the rationale for this because it seems like a big old jump to me. And then back to smaller interval runs.

I'm so tired today. First day of period. Bad idea to run if I feel absolutely cream crackered?

Everyoneafter3 · 30/05/2017 15:00

Getting through that first 25 minute stretch is a massive psychological boost.

I knocked two minutes off my previous 10k on Sunday: I'm closing in on something respectable... Grin

SkiBike007 · 30/05/2017 16:53

The program does work I had the same thoughts in my head about putting back the walking in after nailing the 20min run, but it helps to build distance. Once I completed C25k and built upto 10k I regularly add in a 1min walk at the 25min mark and sometimes 45min mark as it allows me to go further. Keep going you can do it, some days are just easier than others.

winkywinkola · 30/05/2017 19:29

My app doesn't give distance either so I open Runkeeper at the same time so I can get a sense of how far I've run.

4K today! Whoop whoo.

FaithAgain · 30/05/2017 23:13

Hello! Just wanted to add my encouragement. I did c25k starting in January 2012. I couldn't run to the end of the road when I started! The 'run' bits were torture and hyperventilate! But I kept going, extending my distance. Once I could do 5k I ditched the app and just ran a bit further each time. I gradually built up distance. I did a couple of 10ks. By October 2014, I'd done a half marathon!

My tips would be: keep going, push yourself to go out 2-3 times a week. Have a look at signing up for a race, it'll motivate you more. Get your gait analysed and make sure you have the right trainers. I pay over £100 for mine but once you start running over 5k you need a good fit (I found out to my peril with blisters inside my arches!). Warm up, cool down. I love my Fitbit for tracking my runs and the one I have (charge 2) has a setting for intervals. Doing intervals has really helped me improve my pace (when I started, I ran a 16 minute mile, now I can do under 12!). Find people to run with. Listen to podcasts, it takes your mind off the running. Most of all, enjoy your surroundings! Smile

elsie07 · 30/05/2017 23:26

I'm a graduate - started in Jan this year having previously not run at all. Still maintain the first few weeks were the hardest so keep going. Still not managed under 30 min 5k but am getting close so that's ok.

I had some problems with knee and thigh pain (strong aches really) for a few weeks but rested (a bit) and used ice and it all seems to have stopped now which is excellent because I thought injury would stop me from carrying on. Now I realise that it was unlikely you could go from no running to road running without some aches and pains.

What I'm struggling with now is that it's getting warmer and that's making running much harder for me.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 31/05/2017 09:59

I did my first run of the week yesterday after a 3 day break. W7r1. It was a completely flat route so I thought it would be easy but it wasn't. It was quite warm which doesn't help and the was no lovely down hill 🙂.

Anyway I did the 25 mins and, with the walking I went 4.5 k which is the furthest I have done. Considering a park run on Saturday but not sure how to tackle it at this stage.

Pennina · 02/06/2017 20:35

Thank you faith and elsie for the encouragement. I've had to take a slight break as we've had a family bereavement. I am determined to keep plodding away at this as if nothing else it certainly gets me out three times a week exercising to the extent that my heartbeat gets going! Pottering about with my horse and the garden although good for general fitness was not enough to help me lose weight. I've dropped a pound and a half which is good and in the right direction. I'm useless at dieting so I am doing a combination of cutting out that which is calorie laden and no good for me and increasing the exercise. However bad I am at this I find my energy levels increase for a good 24 hours afterwards. Hope everyone else is okay and next week I will be plodding around my nature reserve once again

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 02/06/2017 21:10

Sorry about your bereavement, Pennina. Flowers

It really does sound as if you're going in the right direction though.

FaithAgain · 02/06/2017 21:29

Oh Pennina, be kind to yourself. Flowers Brew I've taken breaks when life stuff got in the way. I always go back to it in time though, it's the only form of exercise I consistently commit to!

Crazy8 · 03/06/2017 14:48

I'm not sure of this question has already been answered but where do you all keep your phone when you run? Also can anyone recommend some headphones that don't fall out when running. Thanks

grannycake · 03/06/2017 17:26

I use a stretchy belt from Amazon over my hips. Phone a bit of a tight fit but works fine

FaithAgain · 03/06/2017 17:35

I wear an arm band designed for my size of phone. I find either ear buds for running that hook over ears okay or I have a Bluetooth headband with speakers (sound is quiet though).

WheresTheEvidence · 03/06/2017 17:57

So having not ran since last Sunday (5min/3min) I went our today and my goal was an 8 minute stretch. Didn't think I'd make it. But set off slow and steady and actually managed the 8 minutes. It was actually timed quite well as I got to my destination (the pub) just as I got to 8 minutes. I then stopped for a drink and a chat then when leaving thought I'd tat myself and tried week 5 dayears 2 basically run for 20 minutes .... and I bloody did!

So I've run 28 minutes today - how is that possible?

SkiBike007 · 03/06/2017 20:42

I use a buddy pouch from blue gizmo it's brill as it uses magnets to sit over front hip of my leggings and I honestly don't notice it at all. I couldn't use an arm band and the bumbag thing just kept riding up.

Well done evidence great running

Borntoflyinfirst · 03/06/2017 21:08

I'm feeling frustrated! Got to week 6 but having real problems with my left knee so I've taken the last week off - and my knee still hurts! So annoying as I feel like I can manage the runs in terms of fitness (my next run was due to be 2x10 mins) but struggling with the pain - even after buying some very expensive trainers a couple of weeks ago! I've decided to wait until the pain has completely gone before starting up again but it's driving me mad!

Sleepingonthebus · 03/06/2017 21:45

Crazy8 I just bought some Taotronics Bluetooth earphones from amazon for £20 and I love them. My earbuds were always falling out.

WheresTheEvidence · 04/06/2017 08:33

Got my 5k race for life today.

Does anyone havery any good stretches they do after their run. Woke up today with severe back pain and wondered if it's because of my 20 minutes run yesterday.

Taking the race today slow and steady :)

SkiBike007 · 04/06/2017 09:55

When my knee niggles I find my hamstrings and legs are really stiff so i try to do lots leg stretches and the priformus stretch really helped my lower back pain, along with "child's pose" - YouTube will have vids to demonstrate. I like Erica Vetra yoga for weight loss vid on YouTube it's good stretch out for 20mins.

Gd luck for those doing park runs today.

WheresTheEvidence · 04/06/2017 14:00

So dido the 5k race for life at a slower jog/occasional walk in 43.56 Very proud of myself!

Thirtyrock39 · 04/06/2017 18:20

Did my first 20 minutes with out stopping- not as tough as I thought considering I was slightly hungover Blush and the 5k suddenly feels achievable !
I also got one of the Amazon fit belts to put phone in
Can't believe only five runs left !! Have downloaded map my run for regular runs once I've completed the 5k
