London marathoners assemble

As the ballot spaces start being allocated I thought I'd start a thread for those of us lucky enough to get a space.

I was rejected through the ballot but I have had a charity space since June so I'm running (and raising £1400) I've been training for a half so I can get the distance under my belt. Im up to 11 miles now in just over 2 hours. I'm slow but getting there. I'd like to get in under 5 hours but I'm happy to just be running it.

Sending a gazillion best wishes kitty x x

Been to the physio today (moved from weds because I couldn't even walk to the train station on weds so worked from home) He didn't think that I've done any permanent damage but he reckoned I'd be a bit of a dick if I attempted the marathon on it (not his exact words obviously) Am so fecking gutted. I tried to hard and feel like such a failure. If I'd only strengthened more, stretched more, lost that stone I need to lose. But hindsight is a wonderful thing I suppose. People have sponsored me. They're going to feel conned now. I'm deferring to next year though so I WILL do it. Just not this year.

Will be cheering you all on from my sofa this year. Best of luck all!

KittyandTeal · 10/03/2017 18:16

Thanks all. Been a rough day but I'm ok. I've just done a 4 mile trail run so I feel a bit better now.

Pickle I'm so sorry, how frustrating and upsetting for you. It sounds like, as hard as it is, you've made the right decision.

On a slightly grimmer note, I'm loosing another toe nail after Sunday's half. I've just trimmed it and there was a blister underneath that popped. My dh gagged 😂😂

Thinking of you Kitty - glad the run helped xx I prefer not to look too closely at my feet- I'm slathering the heels in scholl cracked heel stuff as they dry out really easily, and got one black-ish nail and one that's gone all thick and ugly!

Pickle, so sorry for you, but well done for not being a dick Grin and you'll smash it next year, with all you've learnt so far!

emummy · 10/03/2017 20:16

So sorry to hear your news Pickle. You will definitely get it done next year.

KittyandTeal · 11/03/2017 08:02

I've decided I'm going to join a cheer squad next year (or volunteer to marshal but I think that's quite hard to get into) so I'll be there to cheer you on pickle.

My dh might be one of the ones that hands you a medal too

pickle so sorry to hear that. Must be so disappointing and frustrating. It does sound like the right decision though- it's not worth risking long term injury, or not getting around.

kitty Flowers sounds like you and your family have been through so much.

chocolate it is heartening, in a weird way, that we are all struggling. I guess it's natural! I'm dreading the next few long runs- but I doubt many people would enjoy running 16+ miles on there own in whatever the weather throws at us!!

I haven't been out since my 14 miles. Have had dry socket after my wisdom tooth extraction and the pain has been unreal. Currently full of antibiotics and pain killers and feeling sorry for myself, but improving. Hoping to be back doing an easy run on Monday, and have planned 16 miles for Friday. Antibiotics should be complete by then so hopefully will be recovered and feeling up for it!

Twodogsandahooch · 11/03/2017 17:56

Hello everyone. Sorry I haven't been on the thread for a while. Haven't been on mumsnet that much over the past few weeks.

Sounds like all of you are doing great. My training has been a bit up and down. I managed 18 miles last week (last 3 complete hell). We decided to drop the mileage today to 13 and I thought it would be a breeze. How wrong was I? I was knackered by 10 miles. I think my running partner's pace might be too fast for me and I need to slow down for my long runs.

Had a lovely massage this afternoon though. Good luck for those doing races/long runs tomorrow x

oliversax · 11/03/2017 23:28

pickle so sorry to hear that. Can only imagine your frustration. You will do it next year and I'll be another cheering you on from the side lines.

Elba I have had dry socket and it is one of the most excruciating things I've ever felt, huge sympathy. Although once treated it healed pretty quickly. Hope it does for you too.

Well done everyone, when I'm flagging or lazy you all keep me ploughing on.

If anyone wants some inspiration and has Netflix the Barkley marathons is a brilliant documentary.

chocolatepastry · 12/03/2017 18:47

I might check that Netflix doc out Smile

chocolatepastry · 12/03/2017 18:52

Sorry, posted too soon!

I did 16 today and knackered Grin But felt easier than last week's 14 so that's good! A combination of having a running buddy for 6m, drinking on route for the first time and eating better yesterday in preparation for today all helped I think.

6 weeks today guys!!!

emummy · 12/03/2017 19:51

Well done chocolate.

I had my half marathon today. Went well, initially dry and sunny, then rained solidly for an hour so totally soaked! Got chatting to another woman at mile 6 and we ran the rest of the way together, which was really nice and made it much easier. Got a PB by 8 minutes, so really happy. Will def be running London at a slower pace though!

LobsterMac · 12/03/2017 21:21

Well done emummy! What was your time?

emummy · 13/03/2017 07:19

Did it in 2:10 Lobster, was hoping for 2:15!

KittyandTeal · 13/03/2017 08:20

That's brilliant emummy!

I'm heading out for a half today. Got Hastings half next weekend and I'll do 5 before so that will make it up to 18.

OP posts:
LobsterMac · 13/03/2017 18:30

Wow that's brilliant! I have my first half in a fortnight and I'll be pleased to do under 3!

Twodogsandahooch · 13/03/2017 20:19

Help! Went out for first run tonight in new marathon shoes and it was agony. They were the newer version of a type I've run with for years (Asics nimbus) and so assumed they'd be fine. I had ankle pain, ball of foot pain, numb toes. I don't know whether everything is just so sensitive at the moment and I just need to keep wearing them in, or whether to bail out and run in my old ones, or C - try a new shoe.

What is everyone else doing?

KittyandTeal · 14/03/2017 07:19

Two I always find I need about 50miles in a shoe before they stop making my foot numb. I usually wear them for short runs first.

Could you save your old ones for long runs and news ones for everything else? Bit of a nightmare. I've still not had the guts to wear my sauconys for anything over a 6 mile run

OP posts:
emummy · 14/03/2017 07:28

That doesn't sound right Two. I have never had issues changing shoes, like you I move to the newer version of the same shoe and they have always been just as comfy. Did they make very big changes to the model? You might need to go to a shop for some advice.

chocolatepastry · 14/03/2017 07:35

Yeah, I'd go back to the shop and ask. (I bought some asics that didn't feel right on a short run and they swapped them for a wider fit for me)

Shoes are too important to take a chance with!!

I've got my first bit of chafing Confused so off to look at runderwear!! (Tho Vaseline might be cheaper!!)

Twodogsandahooch · 15/03/2017 20:57

Thanks everyone. Sorry fo slow reply. My bloody phone keeps logging me out of mumsnet. I did 5 miles in the new trainers tonight and they felt better- slightly numb but no ankle pain. I think it is all the plump cushioning.

Will go back to my old ones for the long run at the weekend.
What is everyone up to this weekend? It's funny how the training plans differ so much.

KittyandTeal · 16/03/2017 19:14

I'm doing 18 on Sunday. 5 early miles then headed for the start of Hastings half for the final 13.1. My cousin assures me there's lots of support which I'll need for those hills. It looks brutal.

I want to start getting race ready as, although I love the crowds and cheering etc, sometimes I find the noise etc a bit overwhelming and knackering in itself. Is that weird?

OP posts:
oliversax · 17/03/2017 10:33

Well done on half time emummy. I have a half on Sunday but heading out to a wedding today so not sure that will be the best training!

Good luck for the long runs everyone.

KittyandTeal · 17/03/2017 18:09

I've just had one of those runs where it all worked! Not particularly fast but some definite steady and tempo sections. Legs hurt but that pain that's acceptable, breathing was good and my head agreed with it all.

Only 4.3 miles but I needed a run like that. Now for 18 on Sunday (and I think I'm getting my period!)

OP posts:
chocolatepastry · 17/03/2017 18:26

Well done kitty and good luck for tomorrow- you'll smash it!

I'm feeling fairly positive about it all today- probably means tomorrow's run will be hideous Grin

Missed a mid-week run this week because of poorly ds- my first thought as he was throwing up was 'I can't get it, I'm running the marathon' shortly followed by 'oh rubbish, I'm gonna have to miss a run'!! (He's fine now)

Twodogsandahooch · 17/03/2017 20:35

Have fun at the wedding Oliver.

Close shave Chocolate!

Good luck Kitty and everyone else.

I'm aiming for 20 tomorrow. I have also. made the brave decision to run without my partner. Her natural pace is faster than mine and I don't think I will be able to keep up with her for 20 miles. When we did 18 I was ok for 15 and then crashed for the final 3. I'm hoping the slower pace will mean more left in the tank. We are going to follow the ame route.
