London marathoners assemble

As the ballot spaces start being allocated I thought I'd start a thread for those of us lucky enough to get a space.

I was rejected through the ballot but I have had a charity space since June so I'm running (and raising £1400) I've been training for a half so I can get the distance under my belt. Im up to 11 miles now in just over 2 hours. I'm slow but getting there. I'd like to get in under 5 hours but I'm happy to just be running it.

Don't panic kitty!

I've had pretty much 3 weeks off with injury, but my chiropractor isn't worried and says (as long as it gets better) I've still got enough time to do a 'good' marathon.

I've got some gel heel cups now and they seem to be helping so fingers crossed. It's such an emotional rollercoaster isn't it?

One day I think I'll be fine, the next I'm convinced the pain will only get worse and I'll have to defer.

psychoactive · 08/02/2017 13:14

Agree don't panic! Remember rest and recovery are central to training, I couldn't run at all for the last six or seven weeks before November marathon (but I did hammer my glutes in the gym with expert help to at least get the rear engine as strong as possible) and it was absolutely fine - I think any averagely able fit person could complete the course if their head is in the right place (keep moving!)

KittyandTeal · 08/02/2017 14:17

Thanks all. I feel a bit too ill to do anything tbh. I've managed to keep up the conditioning exercises that my coach gave me and foam rolling but that's about it. I think running 10 miles on a chesty cough has done it.

It is such an emotional roller coaster. I'm still up and down with my ankles as well so at least this will be a good rest for them!

That's good to hear chocolate. I keep telling myself there is ages and if needs be I can run 4 times a week rather than 3 if I get too behind.

Psycho that's great advice. I think I'll crack on with strength stuff if my ankles still keep crappie out on me.

I think I'm just terrible at being ill now. I'm too busy!

Maid I'm glad the shoulder is on the mend. I got 'caught' doing a few planks and hip drops at playtime the other day by our school vicar 😂 He came and joined me after a puzzled face and my explaination.

If all falls apart I'm planning on walk/running the whole thing and soaking up the atmosphere!

It's such a rollercoaster isn't it kitty?

I'm on day 13 of the most horrendous virus I've ever had (apart from the time I got the proper flu) I'm feeling almost 100% again but still have a hacking chesty cough and feel totally wiped out. No training of any description for the past fortnight hasn't helped morale in the slightest.

I spoke to DH tonight about the likelihood of me deferring Sad I would be so gutted but realistically I'm not going to be back up to full strength till next week at the earliest and I just feel I've run out of time (I also have the GP next week about my breast lump which I'm sure will require further investigation)

DH was lovely and reminded me that I will have the whole of the summer to enjoy training (hopefully) without the worry of health issues so I feel slightly happier about it.

I think I'm going to give it till the end of February and see where I am, while trying my best not to kill myself in the process Wink

Another one struggling with a cold here...we are dropping like flies! Hoping it won't go to my chest but I'm asthmatic so we will see. Hard as it is, in the long run it is counterproductive to continue through illness/injury- just prolongs the recovery. I'm saying that as a total hypocrite though as my back is playing up a bit and I'm steadfastly ignoring it in the hope it will magically go away!

Really hoping I can do my long run (12 miles) on Saturday. After that I have two weeks until my half and think I might do a mini taper. I'm tired and it might help my back. Don't ever feel like I've properly recovered from a run before I have to move onto the next one. Doesn't help that my rest days are usually spent at work on my feet for 12 or so hours!

KittyandTeal · 08/02/2017 18:31

I think this year has seen a few really nasty viruses around. This one has wiped my school out like nothing I've ever seen. I went in a few weeks ago and we had 80% or the teachers off and loads of tas off too.

My plan has a few 'down' weeks planned in. Next week being one with a long run of 5 miles so if I'm better that'll be a nice week to ease back in.

Sending mahoosive get well vibes to all. I've been laid down with bloody cold. Five days of no running now. Going to attempt run on treadmill tomorrow. The cold air on my lungs makes me wheeze at the moment so figure a warm gym might be better. Am getting so stressed about it. Have been actively avoiding my plan. Can't bring myself to look at what I should be doing but can't. Ffs. Stupid germs.

emummy · 08/02/2017 22:36

Oh dear, it's like a hospital around here! I do hope you all feel better soon, get the fluids and healthy foods in, rest, rest and rest some more then you can all get out there again. Thinking of investing in a face mask, no germs here please! Although with 3 children, it's only a matter of time...

chocolatepastry · 09/02/2017 09:18

God don't emummy- 2 of my 3 kids have had a feverish cold thing so fully expecting to get that just as my ankle is better!! (Tho least we know colds and viruses go away!)

Loads of time left (I keep repeating myself in a slightly panicky tone) Confused

KittyandTeal · 09/02/2017 12:31

There is. I've just looked at my plan with a slightly panicked face and dh has just gone 'yeah but move this here, do that then, skip that one and you're back on track' I feel better (mentally) now.

I have a 4yo at preschool, a husband who is a pc in schools and I'm a teacher (eyes and ks1) so I've got no chance in terms of keeping germs at bay. I usually have a cast iron immune system but I think the longer runs are asking their toll.

In terestingly, after the meet the experts day I have been thinking I'm probably not eating enough but treating myself on run days with a cookie or cake etc. I'm looking at my diet again and adding in small snacks of fruits and nuts and trying to up my protien. I'm not cutting treat or sugar out but adding some more good stuff in. Need to be a bit moe sensible and see food as fuel rather than calories now.

Oh god, I'm supposed to go running and it's snowing. Fucking snowing.

#nesh

emummy · 09/02/2017 15:49

Had a run in the snow this morning, felt like a real tough runner! Go for it Maid

KittyandTeal · 09/02/2017 15:51

I really want a snow run. Do it (or is it a long one)

OP posts:
Elba84 · 09/02/2017 15:57

No snowy runs here (south cost) but I did my 10 miles in gale force winds and driving rain. Felt hardcore afterwards! Go for it I say, and look forward to the endorphin rush and sense of pride after!

My backs really playing up again Sad But I've never run further than 10 miles and times running out. Not sure what I'm going to do- sensible thing would probably be to take a break but I don't want to!!!

MaidOfStars · 09/02/2017 16:37

Right, I have over knee socks under running socks and thermal leggings, two layers of vests (why today did I not pack a long-sleeved bottom layer?), a long-sleeved hooded top, a head tube, a head band, two pairs of gloves.

KittyandTeal · 09/02/2017 17:31

Elba that is hardcore! Hope your back feels better soon. My sensible head says rest it and catch up later (can still do it on 16-18 miles) but then I've been running on a dodgy ankle (with advice from a coach) so I'm the last one to listen to my own advice!

Maid good luck, you are about o join elbas hardcore runners club!

OP posts:
MaidOfStars · 09/02/2017 18:19

Made it. 10.5k, just over an hour. Nice easy pace, freezing face Grin

elba I can run in rain and cold, but I hate hate hate running in wind. Even on a nice summer day, bright skies etc, if it's windy, I hate it.

KittyandTeal · 10/02/2017 08:34

Well done maid. I'm actually jealous of your freezing run. That's a bit twisted!

OP posts:
MaidOfStars · 10/02/2017 09:56

Yeah, you weird!

Blissful rest day today. No exercise whatsoever, other than daily steps (maybe 25k).

PickleSarnie · 10/02/2017 10:28

I love running in freezing cold weather. The canal freezes over and it's so pretty and quiet. It's attempting to snow here but just a few half arsed flakes.

Just been to the gym to attempt running for the first time in a week. Didn't go well. Still wheezing like a 90 year old chain smoker. Did a really slow 40 minutes. Probably would have been overtaken by actual 90 year old chain smokers had I been outside. Getting really stressed about it now.

KittyandTeal · 10/02/2017 13:48

Pickle I think that may well be me on Monday.

OP posts:
chocolatepastry · 10/02/2017 14:01

No chance snow here (rubbish south coast- never get any!) but it is very cold and miserable.

I'm planning to attempt a run tomorrow...! Been looking at the training plans and I can easily get back on track despite all my missed runs as I was a bit ahead on mileage before injury so feeling confident about that... but only if the ankle/heel is better. It's pain-free when I'm walking (and jogging to school when I was late for pick up!!) so fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes crossed!!

Kitty, hope you feel better soon, but don't rush back- you can afford to miss more than you think I reckon- and same for Pickle, worth getting fully better first.

KittyandTeal · 10/02/2017 14:44

Thanks chocolate. Atm i think I'm feeling better-ish for now. Felt like I was a bit better this morning. I'm planning a relaxing weekend and then a 5 miler on Monday (unless it snows tmrw in which case I might have to do a gentle couple of miles.

Fingers crossed for your run chocolate. I get the impression there is a fair a,punt of wiggle room on the plans s long as you're at a certain level of fitness already.

oliversax · 10/02/2017 21:41

I'm in the chesty cough club and have spent a good couple of days searching Google to try and justify going out to run with a bad chest, funnily enough all the advice points to staying home. Feeling frustrated but know rest is the right thing.

Well done snowy & windy runners. I feel a bit of a failure for missing this week. Plenty of time to bounce back (hopes).

KittyandTeal · 11/02/2017 12:31

Oliver it's a horrid one. If it makes you feel better I got ill last Wednesday. I ignored it and did 8 miles, then a zumbathon and a bust wknd. Then I ran 10 miles and wiped myself out.

I've tested Tuesday onwards and I feel like I'm getting better. I'm going to attempt my 5 miles on Monday.

I reckon if you rest properly now it won't be too long before you're better. I've managed to drag it out my ignoring it!
