London marathoners assemble

As the ballot spaces start being allocated I thought I'd start a thread for those of us lucky enough to get a space.

I was rejected through the ballot but I have had a charity space since June so I'm running (and raising £1400) I've been training for a half so I can get the distance under my belt. Im up to 11 miles now in just over 2 hours. I'm slow but getting there. I'd like to get in under 5 hours but I'm happy to just be running it.

Kitty, my long runs on a Monday too! Will need to do them on my own though. Although I may rope someone in a couple of times and meet up with them for the last few miles.

Alittlebitofthis · 04/01/2017 18:45

Elba, it sounds like that's the best. At least you can defer. Fingers crossed for a quick recovery.

KittyandTeal · 04/01/2017 18:51

Oh Elba how annoying for you.

Definitely good you can defer if you need to. I hope you recover and are pain free asap marathon aside.

A little maybe I've been looking at the wrong week on my training plan then. Are you following the vlm one? I'm doing the beginners one for regular runners that are doing their first marathon.

I'm following a 16 week plan I got from someone at my running club. Started this week which will take me right up to London!

Alittlebitofthis · 04/01/2017 20:17

There are so many plans that I don't think there's a right or wrong way. So long as we're getting the miles in.

KittyandTeal · 05/01/2017 16:41

You're absolutely right alittle.

Rest day for me today, might fit a few planks in later but a combination of endo and dd being up till midnight with itchy chicken pox (poor thing) I'm ready for a rest!

4 easy miles tmrw. I like Fridays as I've got a running buddy for now

Alittlebitofthis · 06/01/2017 12:03

It's great when you have a running buddy. I've been running with headphones but find them a distraction at times.
Poor toot. Chickenpox are itchy! My ds had them last year. This is the last day of the holidays so my mum has picked up ds as I'm working the weekend. I was out for 3 miles. My pace was a bit quicker than Tuesday.
Rest weekend then my long run on Monday so it'll be 5 miles.

emummy · 06/01/2017 13:59

Hope your dd is better soon Kitty; my 3 had it one after the other, with 2 weeks between each one. That was a fun summer....
Lovely steady trail run with dh this morning. Sunday's long run will be 9 miles-ish, let's hope no sleet this time!

KittyandTeal · 07/01/2017 12:21

Thanks, she's much better now. Got enough energy to boss me around and make unreasonable demands 😂

Did an easy 4 miles with a running buddy yesterday. I'm finding I'm feeling tweaks and aches and pains all over at the moment. Much more than my half training I did. I'm wondering if it's my body getting back into the routine of running and strength etc or if I'm hyper aware because I have 'the fear' about injury. Either way it's very annoying.

Out for a 'long' run at 5 miles tmrw. Very hilly trail run so looking forward to it, I've been on road for a few weeks now and missed the trails.

Hello all hope you've all had great weekends!
I've managed to do my 3x week runs this week (first official week of training) woo - so hope I can keep it up. I really need to do some strength work too - thanks for the exercises (lower down thread) My glut meds are really weak so think will concentrate on them plus abs.
Am feeling quite good at the moment. Just v pleased to be out running again post baby and having something to work towards. Sure my motivation will drop when I'm staring at a 20 miler in the freezing cold ha ha!

KittyandTeal · 08/01/2017 08:19

I'm off for a 5 miler this morning with zero motivation. Going with my dad so no excuses.

I woke up in a proper cold sweat last night panicking about where and how I was going to do my 18-22mile runs. First time I've been proper stressed or thought I can't do it.

I think it's because I spent the whole morning organising my zumbathon and contacting people for raffle prizes etc.

I did an hours strength yoga yesterday which was great but I'm bloody aching today! That never happens with yoga!

Good luck this morning Kitty. The long runs will be ok, it's such a gradual build up. Had nucexearly run this morning along country lanes, very pleasant.

oliversax · 08/01/2017 12:03

Well done everyone. I did my first week of official training this week too. Even though it's an easy week it feels good to have ticked it off.

The 16 week training plan looks really achievable from the comfort of the sofa. The cold reality may be somewhat different.

KittyandTeal · 08/01/2017 12:05

My run was lovely, after having no motivation and Dad turning up half an hour early to leave I loved it. Beautiful new trail route, very hilly (well up one hill and back down the other side) muddy and fun.

Then dragged dd out for a 3k walk to try and get some of her energy out!

Weird question...does anyone else get post run chills? I used to get get it after long runs (8miles plus) but now I seem to get them after any run longer than an hourish. I even get them in the summer. Just really cold and bone chilled all day. Usually need a hot bath to warm up, even a hot post run shower doesn't help. I'm soooooo cold!

OP posts:
emummy · 08/01/2017 13:21

Yes I do, although more in winter. I tend to feel a bit cold all day. Feeling a bit warmer now after shower, food, coffee, more food! Was dressed plus wrapped in dressing gown at one point!
Well done on your run, sounds like your dad could be helpful in the coming months!

RockyTop · 08/01/2017 13:38

Yes, I get the chills for a couple of hours after a long run, never found anything that's stopped it.

Training plan going ok here. I did a half on New Years Eve, just to see if I could, but may plan had this week's run in as 11miles which I did this morning. Had a tricky week with a cold and little sleep so really pleased with myself that I've managed to keep to plan despite all that.

KittyandTeal · 08/01/2017 14:07

Glad it's not just me then. My friend knitted me a blanket in mermaid colours that I'm snuggled up in atm!

Rocky sounds like you're doing brilliantly.

My dad is training for a half we are doing in march. I think he will be very useful in the next few months. I think I'm going to rope him and a few other in for my long runs, meet people at certain points and they can run part of the way with me, seems like a good way to break up the long runs

Hello everyone! Sorry I lost the thread again. Mumsnet keeps logging me out and I can never remember my password when I want to type a quick reply.

Training going ok here. I must admit I only managed 2 runs this week as work crazy but did a hilly 10.5 miles today. Am now very sore and about to devour a huge bowl of pasta.

Elba - sorry to hear about your injury. Agree about resting up. No marathon is worth long term problems.

I couldn't decide which running plan to follow and so have put the long runs for 5 of them in a table. That gives me a rough idea of what I should be doing. Interesting that official virgin one has a 22 miler but all the others go to 20 miles.

During the week I will do one steady run with my running club and then another session - either cross training or pace running.

Happy Sunday everyone x

Alittlebitofthis · 09/01/2017 11:22

Hey. Everyone's runs sound like their going well!
I too get cold after a run. Usually heating up and extra layers on!
I went today and did my long run of 5 miles which means week one is now complete!
I was wandering about routes too as I always go the same one so this morning I took a completely different one! It was really nice. I was thinking about the longer runs and I've got some thought of. For my 20 mile one, I might get the bus out to a place half an hour away which is 20 miles and run back. The only thing is I'm thinking it's not paths all the way back and it's a busy country road. There's a old railway line near me so I could run to there, along for 10 miles then up onto the main road and run back back where there's definitely paths!
I know I've missed lots of what people have written. I wish you could see the thread at the same time as writing!

chocolatepastry · 09/01/2017 11:50

I think I've got plantar faciitis Sad training was all going fine but after my last run I developed a sore ankle/heel. Done lots of reading online and going to try more calf stretches and rolling on a ball/iced bottle, but really worried it'll get worse and not better given the amount of miles I need to be doing over the next few months Sad will be devastated if I have to pull out...

KittyandTeal · 09/01/2017 12:56

Alittle I often run the same few routes but as I've got more confident in being able to run further I've added new routes. I find running a new one so much fun, even one I've on,y done a few times. I plan mine out on strava and follow it that way. Have a look on the os map, there might be footpaths etc to be,p you avoided the road.

Chocolate I've had plantar fasciitis on and off a few times. I think I got it again a few weeks ago as my distance came back up again. It's settled down again now, lots of stretching, rolling and strength work. I find mine gets bad when I stop doing as much hip stability and core work so I've really focused on that and it was fine yesterday for my tough 5 miles.

Depending on how painful it is you my be able to run through it. That's what I've done in the past while upping the stretching and strength work. Are you in old trainers? Might be worth having your gait done again and checking your trainers aren't dead. Or a sports massage, that hurt like crap but really work for me.

OP posts:
Alittlebitofthis · 09/01/2017 16:01

Fingers crossed that you don't need to defer. When I did Edinburgh half last year I ended up with a sore hip that I went to physio a few times. It was due to not stretching properly.
I really like strava kitty although I've never planned my miles on it. Do you have premium on your one? I've worked out miles on fetch before. I'm 99% sure there's no paths for a lot of it. I was thinking as well, to get the bus there, I'd need to get a bus into town then another out the road so I'm probably just as well going from here.

KittyandTeal · 09/01/2017 16:15

No I just have the bog standard free one. The app is brilliant but if you log in online you can plan and save routes then load them up when you run. You can look at the heat maps when you plan too which helps. Sometimes footpaths are marked but not maintained well so I usually look on the heat map, if someone has run it then I assume its passable. It's worked so far 😁

Big achievement for me today. I've reached half way on my fundraising total! My page went out to my parents at school and so many have been so generous (many are not exactly flush for money either so it's so kind of them) I have to admit I've had a few tears reading the messages! I'm finding the whole putting myself out there and telling my story, laying myself bare really, mentally challenging. It's another step and addition to the challenge and I'm glad I'm going it but it's much more emotionally taxing than I expected.

Well done on the fundraising Kitty, that's great.
