I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

Thanks eightytwenty. Unfortunately I don't really have time for an hour (I fit in swimming first thing before getting the children ready for school etc.).
I struggle to count too now I count in batches of ten and that helps. Psychologically as well as just keeping count!

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 01/03/2017 22:07

Tough session tonight! 2100m in the hour. The coach was a bit of a task master hence the bigger distance! Happy enough with that anyway, furthest I've gone so far.

Hissy · 01/03/2017 23:15

A quiet 1300m for me tonight

I booted myself out of the pool, otherwise I'd have stayed till 9 and swum something silly

Which would have hurt me for my lesson tomorrow...

I feel much better for a swim, it was a good idea!

rightsofwomen · 01/03/2017 23:57

I wanted to go tonight for my mental health, but DS2 super clingy so I couldn't.

Will run after school drop off tomorrow and then work in the evening.

I've got my new swimming cap! It made its debut this morning. It is a Speedo silicone one (www.proswimwear.co.uk/speedo-multi-colour-silicone-swim-cap-grey-white.html). Speedo was the make recommended in the link from Shotgun (thank you). It was a doddle to get on. I was remembering the rubber swimming caps of my childhood that were impossible to get on without help. Next time I need to have a bun not a ponytail in my hair so as to keep the ends dry (a bit of water got in around the neck, but I was surprised how dry the very top of my head was). So hopefully happier hair now … (I'm sure it doesn't help its general condition that I colour it to cover up the grey!).

Great swimming Face and Hissy. Hope you get your run / swim in and feel better Rights.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 02/03/2017 09:18

Where are you all btw? Is everyone here in the UK? I'm in Ireland ....

SingingAvocado · 02/03/2017 09:20

West Sussex

rightsofwomen · 02/03/2017 09:20

Just back from run. Chakras are more balanced.

Face I live south of Cambridge.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 02/03/2017 09:28

Good to hear that rights!

I always find it amusing when women speak of running with their child in a jogging buggy - it's AWAY from the kids I want to get when I exercise GrinGrin

PetraDelphiki · 02/03/2017 09:39

One bit of advice for the hair is to soak it before you get in the pool - according to hairdresser once the hair is saturated it won't absorb more chlorinated water!

SingingAvocado · 02/03/2017 10:11

I hadn't heard that Petra, thanks (off to Google it!).

Just done first swim in a month, finally over the lurgy! God it was a struggle, only managed 14 lengths but am easing in . . .

Good news about the swim cap Singing, might try one myself, could then go on days when I don't need to wash my hair, which I avoid at the moment.
I'm in Gloucestershire.

Hissy · 02/03/2017 11:42

I have a zoggs fabric cap, pink (am so not girly) although replacement nose clip is pink now too... #worrying

Had to wear TI rubber hat on Sunday, god they are tight! Hate them! Gave me a headache

I only wear a cap to stop hair swirling around my face.

I'm in north Hampshire, will happily partner anyone who wants a swim buddy... :)

BestIsWest · 02/03/2017 17:26

800 done lunchtime. Better than last week.

buckingfrolicks · 02/03/2017 19:53

I have that cap I think, avocado, it's brilliant.

I have been watching youtube videos to polish my breast stroke, the difference is amazing now I have my legs and arms working properly, I go like a rocket, only trouble is my swim has changed from a comfortable, meditative, peaceful thing, to a fast and tiring thing that leaves me feeling knackered! But it's all to the good - they do say if you leave the pool without feeling like your legs are gonna give way beneath you, you aint worked hard enough.

I'm in N Herts so not far from RightsofWomen possibly.

buckingfrolicks · 02/03/2017 20:04

MYusername - goodness me, no I don't give a thought to what people look like in the pool.

I love anyone who is grafting away at their swimming - it's a shared experience, if you like, because there's me, size 18 (down from 20 after 4 months of swimming 4 x a week) and walking out into the pool area like a Venus, I'm so chuffed with myself these days with all the swimming I'm doing.

The only people that rile me are those who huddle, chattering in the middle of the pool, doing absolutely fuck all swimming. They irritate me!

buckingfrolicks · 02/03/2017 20:04

Hissy, what is this Total swimming immersion thing of which you speak?

BestIsWest · 02/03/2017 21:34

Glad I am not competitive. There was I doing my front crawl and trying my hardest being lapped by a woman doing breaststroke with her head up out of the water so as not to get her hair wet. Going twice as fast as me. I was well impressed.

Hissy · 02/03/2017 22:09

Bet she was doing the wedge kick, so she'll be totally fucking up her hips.... she'd be better off doing nothing...

Hissy · 02/03/2017 22:14

Best you're on the Facebook Mile group right?

Look at some of the newbie posts, a wondrous woman called Pamela posts, one thing she says is "slow down to go faster"

There are all kinds of speed in the pool. I get big muscley airmen get in my pool, (well it's theirs actually.. ) they thrash up and down for 20mins and get out.

Sure I could do that, but what does it achieve?

All power, but no strength, no stamina, no swim fitness

Best, you will get there... keep on swimming!!

Hissy · 02/03/2017 22:20

bucking I had the same with the backstroke! Used to be my rest stroke, but I've fine tuned it, now I can belt along... knackering!

Have a look on YouTube for TI, there's a lot there. Effortless endurance.

I'll see if I can find a link.

BestIsWest · 03/03/2017 05:56

More rotation, less kicking then? Should be going lunchtime and will try that.

lljkk · 03/03/2017 15:51

All that technical stuff scares me. I'm at my limits already.
I am learning to draft in the pool, so fast breast-strokers suit me fine :).

Last night was amusing. 35 in the pool (I was warned as I entered). For some reason at least 16 were in the Fast lane so that was carnage. I can swim in medium or fast, luckily. I swim faster when I'm in medium lane b/c I don't have to let others pass.
There were huddle-chatters, a few who couldn't swim straight & a few who didn't believe in letting others pass, but mostly good. Only need a 1 minute rest from my goggles, even better.

No swim tag so I had to estimate my distance, boohoo!
