I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 25/01/2017 20:22

Don't think so - not unless she'd forgotten to put her top on! Grin

KanyesVest · 25/01/2017 21:59

Hello again, and thanks for the welcomes Smile

I had an inauspicious start to my reinvention as a waterbaby. I packed myself up, ready to hit the 1pm "business swim" at the pool just round the corner. When I got there I had a long discussion with the guy on the desk about how the swim wasn't on. His argument was that it's not on on Wednesdays. Mine was that today was Thursday. Seems his view held more water (boom tish) than mine Blush. Anyway, I got to the other local pool for just after 1 so got 40ish mins in the very civilised middle lane. I lost count, but I did between 30&40 lengths, a mix of crawl and breast stroke.

Shotgun, the lifeguard was on stellar form here today - I saw him having a chat with at least 3 people about lane etiquette. Our casual lane is nearly half the pool with lots of rehabbers, learners and chatters. It leaves the other lanes tight enough (7 in each of the middle and fast/crawl lanes at one point) but things keep moving reasonably well.

😁kanye

i rang up the osteopath and said can I have an appointment at the Lara Croft centreConfused. Our centre is named after a gold medal cyclist not tombraiderBlush

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 25/01/2017 23:15
Grin Great going Kanyes. Our pool is hopeless about communication. The timetable online is completely wrong; apparently the correct version is on the app. Except during the Christmas holidays, when the app said 'open begween 9am - 5pm.' Um okay, but when can I swim please? When I phoned up I was told they have the timetable available on leaflets at reception. So . . . I have to drive over there to find out when I can swim, instead of someone updating the bloody website and app! I've seen mums coming away with little ones, all pacced up with their swimming kit, trying to explain why they can't swim today 'because of the silly timetable.' Hmm It's appalling really, but the people st the desk cheerfully couldn't care less, and it's not their fault anyway. Phew that was a rant!
bruffin · 26/01/2017 12:12

Did 110 laps this morning 2.75k. Then went to see osteopath and ive strained my supraspinatus muscle which also affect the ulna nerve. She dug deep on the massage and feels better already.

SingingAvocado · 26/01/2017 12:16

Interesting to hear, Bruffin. My shoulder started hurting a bit on my Monday and Tuesday swims. I iced it (bag of frozen peas!) yesterday which is usually my osteopath friend's first advice. Couldn't swim today because my husband is away again – maybe just as well. Found this: www.swimsmooth.com/injury.php (so maybe need to roll more!).

SingingAvocado · 26/01/2017 12:18

By the way, you swam REALLY FAR Bruffin!

bruffin · 26/01/2017 12:25

I have to ice it 3 times today and tomorrow. I did do nearly all breaststroke, because of my shoulder and only stopped once to have a moan with a friend about the flipper swimmer who nearly hit my face.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 26/01/2017 13:35

Much sympathy for the shoulders. I can recommend weight training; I've had a painful shoulder for years but since seeing a strength & conditioning coach at my physio, the improvement has been amazing.
Thanks for the link Avocado. I'm sire I've read all that stuff before but tend to forget in the struggle to stay alive! I'm sure I was taught to cross the miine and to enter using the thumbs - times change!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 26/01/2017 13:36

Cross the midline I mean

bruffin · 26/01/2017 13:56

I know i dont cross the midline, because i was taught not to do that and i dont think i twist my hand too much. However i think i may have had a lightbulb moment, before christmas i was knitting a lot to make christmas presents and having googled it and shoulder pain can be a problem.
As i said previously i dont do a lot of front crawl, although we did concentrate on it yesterday. I will ask the osteopath when i see her next week.

KanyesVest · 26/01/2017 14:12

Wow, bruffin, that's an amazing distance. Sounds like you're getting good advice about your shoulder. Who knew knitting could be so dangerous Smile

I went to the pool on the eight day and had a lovely swim. I did 40 lengths managed to keep track this time! in about 35 mins which I was pleased with. I could have done more, but decided not to push it too hard in my second swim so I don't send another part of me wonky.

lljkk · 27/01/2017 10:41

Long swimsuits: I am 5'8" with a long body (inside leg = 31-32") & just got this legsuit from Wiggle which fits fine. The leg part is just enough for modesty, perfect.

The model looks SO delighted with it!
What's the shelf bra bit like? I really don't need any sort of boob support in a swimsuit or anything else in fact

The speedo one looks good as well but they don't have it in my size.

lljkk · 27/01/2017 11:16

No shelf, just extra fabric to reduce nipple prominence. I'm a D-cup & thought a bit more boob support could be nice, but it comes in different sizes anyway. Sizes at Wiggle might be limited since it is on sale. I got a 38"/UK 14, I suppose I could have had a 36 and maybe that wouldn't be so long, but then there's the D-cup problem.

(I think I prefer no model. If I see a perfect model wearing something my instant thought is "Well I don't look like her so probably not a product for me.")

flamingnoravera · 27/01/2017 12:32

I got to the pool late today and had to pick up my pace to get my 1km done. I did it in 25 mins!

I felt guilty though because a woman in the showers was complaining about the end wall feeling greasy and I know it is because I swim with my hands coated in vaseline to prevent prunyness. I do try to avoid touching the wall but sometimes I cannot help it and it must leave a greasy film. I would hate to touch it if it was not mine. But I cannot swim for more than a few minutes without it.

PetraDelphiki · 27/01/2017 14:54

I managed 2k yesterday in 1hr 15 (according to my activity tracker - could have sworn it wasn't that long!!!) which I guess is pretty slow :-( but first time doing that distance (basically non stop) - and with tumble turns! Just need to keep doing it!

bruffin · 27/01/2017 14:59

My 2.75k yesterday was 1 hour 40 breastroke, with the odd frontcrawl to stretch my back.Went for steady pace rather than speed.Building up to 5k for the swimathon.Trouble is i dont know how many ive done until i get out and check phone.

Hissy · 27/01/2017 16:23

I'm on 13400 for the month...

If I can cram in 1600m I'll hit a nice round 15000.

If I squeeze a bit more out of the month I'll potentially hit 16100 and then have swum a nice round 10 miles...

Not bad considering a week off for a cold...

bruffin · 27/01/2017 17:08

Well done Hissy, Ive done 11750 with probably 1 swim this weeked left this month

PetraDelphiki · 27/01/2017 17:12

I'd love to build up to 5 k...not sure about spending 2-3 hours at a time training for it tho!

rightsofwomen · 27/01/2017 17:25

8749 for the month so far.

KanyesVest · 27/01/2017 19:57

Holy moly, I should have read all your distances before going swimming today... I only did about 30 lengths, 30ish minutes Blush. It was a bad time to go - a family swim in half the pool and one of the two available lanes was booked. The four of us doing lengths kept crashing into each other but it was terribly polite and lots of "after you", " no you first" at the ends. And I was a lot more tired than I thought I was both from lack of sleep and just muscle tiredness from the two longer swims.

I see some of you use apps. Which ones do you find good?

BestIsWest · 27/01/2017 20:00

Kanye, my longest distance thus far is 640 m so don't worry. We'll get there.
