I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

The swimsuit has been dispatched!!!

1K done this morning. Plenty of room in the pool. Kerching.

SingingAvocado · 18/01/2017 09:28

SuperRights!

Sidney you were asking about a stroke that helped with abdominal muscles. I haven't found the answer but I do try to pay attention to tightening my stomach during front crawl and backstroke. It helps lift my legs higher in the water which is better for the swimming and I reckon it must do a little bit of good to fight a flabby middle.

BestIsWest · 18/01/2017 09:37

I find using a kickboard and holding it in front of my head at full stretch good for abs. I think backstroke is too.

BestIsWest · 18/01/2017 09:38

What is this costume? I'm a long bodied 5'10 so well aware of,er, costume issues.

rightsofwomen · 18/01/2017 10:07

Oh do keep up Best Wink
This is the cossie www.marksandspencer.com/secret-slimming-printed-short-swimsuit/p/p22499580

I'm 5'7" and struggle so I can only imagine how traumatic swimsuit shopping is for you. It does say this one is longer length.

rightsofwomen · 18/01/2017 10:08

[adds kick board to wish list].

rightsofwomen · 18/01/2017 10:09

nb. I wasn't attached to the secret slimming (am pretty slim), but the boy shorts and the loverlllly colours.

Hissy · 18/01/2017 11:46

I have my new swimsuit rights, it's nice! it's not entirely what I expected, but it does look good.

Although I think I've dropped more bulk to be honest, so although am not 'slim' per se, im slimmER than I was.

Lovely Boyf is nagging me to let him take me shopping. i HATE shopping. I still have 2 pairs of work trousers that don't hang off me.

I'm pretty much well today, ignoring cough and slight sniffle, will get to the quiet pool for a session today, try out my tempo trainer, and practice some Total Immersion moves so I don't get told off too much when I go to the speed workshop.

Hissy · 18/01/2017 11:48

I'm 5'6", but all legs, well not all... Short body

Hissy · 18/01/2017 11:49

This is now the Mumsnet Cozzie!!! Grin

Biking007 · 18/01/2017 12:06

Any recommendations for short arse v.big boobs swimmer?Grin I tried a boy leg one mentioned upthread from proswimming but it pulls in the crotch when in the pool & looks hmmm. I'm fed up spending £40-50 on boob support cosies (I also hate the plunging neck line these usually have) which only last 3-4mths when most of my pool time is standing around with my 5yr old Hmm helping her swim. I do get in a single weekly 30-40L for me, and twice in the summer when the outdoor pool opens next my work which I love Smile

rightsofwomen · 18/01/2017 12:25

Grin @ MN cossie! Let's get us a M&S photoshoot!

We need a photo Hissy! Well done on the toning. It'll be all that swimming Grin

Can't help Biking, I am tall with zero boobs. Happy to browse the internet for you though! Do you like sporty looking ones?
What about this bad boy? www.leialingerie.com/freya/underwired-swimsuit/as3991.aspx?colour=purple

Biking007 · 18/01/2017 12:39

That's flipping perfect rights have just ordered a 40G I love Freya bras as they "fit" me well - your a genius I can never find cossies I like that don't look granny style in my size. Thanks.

Hissy · 18/01/2017 13:39

rights I will wear the MN cozzie on my TI Smart Speed Workshop and get a screen grab from the video :D

I like that Freya coszzie too! nice one!

wapphighwood · 18/01/2017 13:51

Swimming efforts thwarted by poorly 2yo for the past few days but managed 1k at lunchtime today Smile trying to do more front crawl lengths to get heart rate up, managed about 10 out of 40, wasn't particularly counting. My crawl technique is quite bad, my leg kicks don't seem to add anything. 4.8% of distance target completed.

Biking007 · 18/01/2017 16:14

I'm impressed by the front crawl training I've spent the last 18mths trying to teach myself but panic hold my breath too much arrhh I seem to have to swim 30L of back stroke/breast stroke (full face under) before I get in the "zone" and feel brave enough to try crawl. The most I've managed is 1L full bilateral breathing but I keep persisting Smile
I'm super excited my older DDs swim club have just emailed me to say she is moving into the development squad L8 Smile she will be stoked she's 9 but looks 7 as quite small physically but swims like a rocket it's a joy to go swimming with her as she can go in the lanes now and motivates me to go Grin I can't wait to tell her later.

Sidney · 18/01/2017 17:16

Thank you SingingAvocado and BestIsWest - I'll see if either of those 2 tips reduce the size of the flab around my middle!

BestIsWest · 18/01/2017 17:17

My kicks don't seem to add anything to my front crawl either. No idea what I'm doing wrong. I always do a few lengths with a kick board as I've had some muscle wastage due to an illness and I'm supposed to be building them up.

But even before that, I used to do lengths with a float between my legs, just using my arms and I used to be faster without using my legs.

SingingAvocado · 18/01/2017 17:59

Congrats to your daughter, Biking. That is fab news!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 18/01/2017 19:18

Rubbish legs here as well. Apparently some swimmers don't particularly use their legs - but they can still swim fast. I really can't!
Love that booby cozzie - can only find it in my size at full price though. Can't really justify £60 when the current one is fine although it does do the hated plungy-front thing.

Biking007 · 18/01/2017 21:04

Thanks avocado she was super Grin Grin tonight then a bit gulp when she thought about how it will feel at her first session she is far braver than me!

BestIsWest · 18/01/2017 21:38

Some good tips on freestyle kicking here Swimsmooth.

Point your toes, stretch your ankles and kick from the hip while imagining you are clenching an imaginary coin between your buttocks.

bruffin · 19/01/2017 09:34

We were always told to kick from the hip.

Did a lesson yesterday and concentrated on breastroke.Got my stroke down to 5 glides in 25m. Swam a mile overall.
This morning actually got up for an early swim. Did an hour and swam 1900m, uf i had realised i would have done another 4 lengths to do the 2k

rightsofwomen · 19/01/2017 15:01

The suit has arrived.
It's going back I'm afraid. Not long enough and the shoulder straps are too far apart. Nice fabric and colours though, so a shame. Oh and I wasn't expecting the inner boob lining.

I signed up for the 2017 swimathon this morning. I have to do 5k on April 7th, it should take me about 2.5 hours hopefullyShock
