I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

Well done Rights! I went this morning (once I'd scraped loads of ice off the car) and it was nice and quiet today, allowing me to work on my bilateral breathing without getting flustered by lots of people around. It felt good to be exercising after all the Christmas food.

bruffin · 29/12/2016 11:14

I did an hour yesterday with my new misfit ray. First half didnt get it working properly but then found it had to flash to tag lengths and i did another 30 so probably did a mile

OrangeSunset · 02/01/2017 20:55

Hi! Wondered if you seasoned swimmers might have an idea of where I can get a programme to profess my swimming? Managed 400m as part of a Tri last year, but have lost that ability now. I used a tri training schedule to get there, and would like one for swimming - ideally printable! Have found a few online but they are very badly laid out and I found myself transposing each session on to a post it. Very time-consuming!

bruffin · 02/01/2017 21:09

have you got any classes in your area? Ours are called swim and stamina which i thought would be good for you.

iI went to the olympic pool this evening with dd 19. She is learning to dive and living it. During her class i swam for 50 minutes and did a mile. It is a lovely pool and not too busy. I would go more regularly but it costs me over £10 a swim because of fares and tonight came out same time as West Ham and couldnt get into the shops so didnt have time to get food before train home.

Bruffin that's a great link, thanks. Aiming to go this evening so will give it a whirl!

HNY all! I'm out of action with a cold. Haven't beensince I was on holiday - 11 days and counting. Same with the gym. In theory I could go (according to the pt I was seeing your body only needs a couple of days for the immune response to kick in), but I don't think it would be fair on the other swimmers for me to be sneezing and dripping snot everywhere!
Will do some at-home strength exercises today I think - start the ball rolling. Good to hear peopleare getting back at it.

SingingAvocado · 03/01/2017 14:50

Get well soon, Shotgun!

Well 2017, let's get going!! I'm starting back with confidence and determination... and it's just as well as you'll see at the end of this post.

Took the boyfriend to the pool yesterday in return for him dragging me running on Christmas Eve. I'd say he got the nicer deal... It's ok, we luffs him... He bought my Garmin swim watch it honour of my mile swim 😍

So a quick 1300m yesterday and back today with son and his mate another 1250m.

Total for week so far is 2550m give or take.

And now the eventful bit:

Ok, slow lane but nowhere else to go as one lane taken by swimming lessons, other has 6 people in it all swimming mixed strokes, 4 breast stroke swimmers and then the slow, with 2 in it.

All goes well for 50m, i start the 3rd length and the woman is WALKING, I overtake her, but bloke at other end has set off and we narrowly avoided hitting

I said to her that she can't walk in a swim lane.

Apparently "this is my fitness routine, I can do what I want"

I said to her that you can't walk in a swim lane. I appealed to the life guard he said "there are no rules to say she can't" she even said that she has been doing it for years and fortunately stopped herself before she accused me of "just rocking up". Just as well...

I pointed out that this was dangerous, ridiculous and made no sense at all. I also may have pointed to the direction signs and said "it says SWIM anti-clockwise, not WALK"

Lane next to me then became empty, so I went in there and carried on, swimming off my fury.

Then another flaming walker joined her. It was bloody laughable.

At one point a young lad appeared at the end of the lane I was in but thought better of it and joined his mate in another lane. Perhaps I'd not quite swum all the fury off... 😂😂😂

Should add, duty manager was brilliant, was going to speak to the life guards and make sure they guide all walkers to the open swim area in future.

Oh and there was a flasher too...

As my son said "this isnt helping your anxieties about this pool, is it?" 😂😂

bruffin · 03/01/2017 19:37

the overs 50s leisure has walkers, but thankfully they stick to the rest of the pool. Smile

lljkk · 03/01/2017 19:39

Oh well, Hissy, at least it wasn't boring. There's an old codger at my pool who swims very slow right in the way, including in the fast lane Confused. He looks miserable before he starts & then everyone whinges about him. He needs go to open sessions, not lanes, methinks.

My pool twice this week has had a flurry of superfast swimmers in the fast lane. Bit of entertainment keeping out of their way. Lanes are equal dimensions, & yesterday it was 12 in fast lane, 11 in medium lane... 4 in slow lane!!

BestIsWest · 03/01/2017 19:40

Funnily enough my physio has advised me to try walking in the pool

Hissy · 03/01/2017 19:45

Oh yes, walk in the pool, but not Ina swim lane!

They do have slow lanes when it's all lane swim, and the first lane does permit walking, because there is no other option.

The issue was that there was already one lane fewer, because of swimming lessons, and there is a double lane for All Swimmers and families, non lane users stick to the rope and go up and down, a walker could easily do this. The woman could have swum in the lane, dipped under the rope and then done her walking next to the swim lane, nobody would have been inconvenienced

I've seen her before, will report her again and make sure the duty manager is called if she refuses to walk outside of swim lanes

This is WAR! 😉😂

Hissy · 03/01/2017 19:48

I'm going to see if I can manage a morning swim. It's completely in the wrong direction for work

Or I could pay and try the one near work... Perhaps wait until DS is at secondary school and more responsible for getting himself to school.

rightsofwomen · 04/01/2017 16:30

peri how is your leg healing? Are you climbing the walls yet? Hmm, bad choice of words. You know what I mean.

hissy interesting what you say about walking. A friend of mine does pool running most mornings. She pootles from the deep end to about 1/2 way down. It's never been an issue as I think she goes down the middle when the others are going round and round. I've been advised to do it when I've been injured from running, but until I get water proof mp3 player it's not happening. It's a great work out I think.

Hoorah for new Garmin! No one got me the 10 quid ticker thing for Xmas.

I've been for a 1K swim today. I barely get out of breath these days. I have improved SO much! I would like to get quicker. Am thinking it would be good to invest in some lessons before I attempt that though.

I'm having gel nails at a birthday party in a beauty salon this evening (if you knew me, you'd laugh at this!). Can I swim with them? If not I shall go for the callous peel!

bruffin · 04/01/2017 17:37

I had my first lesson back. They were mean. We did 18 warm up then 32 lengths of frontcrawl drills. interestingly my misfit ray only picked up 42 of 50,but that was most likely the legs only and the when we did one arm. Then did 14 to make up the mile and misfit picked those up properly.
Rights Ive had gels before and they seem to be ok when i swim.

Hissy · 04/01/2017 18:25

Rights I do gel for my toes, stays on forever... tbh it's the best for swimmers as it does stay on better/longer

I have zero issue with people using water for physiology, but not in a love swimming lane session. This flaming baby boomer could have easily allowed space for, ya know, swimmers and had her work out without screwing the whole lane for all users.

If people need to walk in a pool, they need to understand that it's not compatible with swimming and it's better manners/etiquette to allow those who are there to swim to do just that.

bruffin that sounds like a great (if knackering) session! I'm concerned my lessons are not pushing us enough, it needs to step up a bit or I'll have to find another group. £12.50 per week is 3 open sessions where I could hit mile lengths

As it is, I've asked the school if the adults can consider doing the Swimathon, all of us, even the beginners. I know they'd get so much out of setting themselves a challenge (however small) and achieving it. And any length they do is one that the more advanced don't have to... :)

bruffin · 04/01/2017 18:52

my lessons are £47 for 6 weeks. We concentrate on a different stroke every week. last term and this we are really concentrating on leg work.

Hissy · 04/01/2017 21:08

There's a (fast) lane walker/Hopper in aibu...

She's being corrected gently, but

It's because it's flaming January isn't it?

BestIsWest · 04/01/2017 21:18

I saw that thread and thought of you Hissy. [Grin].

Hissy · 04/01/2017 21:45

Think it has to be a wind up.

When are all the schools back? When will there be proper news for journos to write?

rightsofwomen · 04/01/2017 22:07
