I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

I used to see a personal trainer who was also a swimmer; the couple of times I was ill when seeing him he told me that a couple of days off was enough, after that the immune system is doing its job even though you still have symptoms. I had a horrid virus thing but still went to the gym three times a week - was about the only thing I did for a couple of weeks but I was surprised at how much I could manage. Not sure I'd feel the same about getting wet when ill but he seemed to think it was fine. He was doing trials for the Olympics so pretty serious and clued-up.

Hissy · 11/12/2016 21:58

I had a couple of Mondays off with high temperatures, but was ok by the Thursday lesson.

Am right as rain now.. wondering if I go to big busy pool on Monday , or pay to go to quiet pool and get another mile done.

I may go to RAF pool while it's open and then use public pool over Christmas and get my groove back there.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 12/12/2016 11:48

700m again today, mostly freestyle. It was quite busy, but the slower lanes looked really slow, so I plunged into the fast lane. Thought I was keeping out of everyone's way, but after about 250m the lifeguard came to the end and very politely asked me to chnange lanes! He called me 'miss', which softened the blow somewhat. Think I'll start working on speed over distance!

PetraDelphiki · 12/12/2016 17:05

Wow never swum anywhere where the lifeguards bothered...

I managed 1k yesterday (about 600m crawl) but the pool was overheated (felt like a bath) which was horrid! Looking forward to lovely outdoor swim tomorrow morning!

SingingAvocado · 13/12/2016 10:15

Morning all! You are encouraging me to get back in the pool. I've not swum for a fortnight and feel very guilty. Feel ok in myself (ear and sinus pain are gone now) but reaching for a tissue regularly. What happens about swimming if you are still snotty?

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 13/12/2016 13:27

Well without a noseclip I'd be permanently snotty (think I'm allergic to the fumes or something) so I'd say give that a try.

Hissy · 13/12/2016 16:34

My nose clip has changed my LIFE

PetraDelphiki · 13/12/2016 17:30

1300m today inlovely outdoor pool - have discovered the solution to my tumble turns...twist the other way!!!!

Hissy · 13/12/2016 18:18

🏊

Where is the open pool? Is it heated?

BestIsWest · 13/12/2016 18:33

Can I join? I used to swim regularly and did the 3k swimathon about 6 years ago but work and an accident got in the way.

Now my physio has told me to get back in the pool so I went today in my lunch hour and did 20 lengths.
I was hugely pleased withbthat not having been in the pool for 4 years.

Best of all the pool was completely empty except for one other person.

rightsofwomen · 13/12/2016 19:29

Welcome best.

Well done on getting back in the pool.
You must have a pretty good level of fitness to do 20 right off.

rightsofwomen · 13/12/2016 19:31

I was planning on swimming at 9.30pm but THE POOL IS CLOSED!! Glad I checked. Will make myself highly visible and go for a run when DS2 in bed.

BestIsWest · 13/12/2016 19:50

I always used to find the first 10 were the worst and after that I could carry on forever. I am terribly unfit but do a lot of walking.

PetraDelphiki · 13/12/2016 21:21

Hampton open air pool - definitely heated!!!

SingingAvocado · 14/12/2016 11:15

I've just looked up Hampton pool, Petra and it looks fab! My husband and I took out membership at the same time in August – me swim only and he got the full swim and gym membership but he hated being indoors so much he only used it about twice and cancelled as soon as he was allowed (3 months) and is going running instead. It is lovely being outdoors.

Hissy · 14/12/2016 13:29

Hampton is not a million miles from me, just up the M3...

ROADTRIP!!

PetraDelphiki · 14/12/2016 17:32

Tell me when - meet you for coffee (cafe there pretty good)

rightsofwomen · 15/12/2016 09:22

1k done early door.

SingingAvocado · 15/12/2016 09:43

I'm back to swimming! Did (accidentally) 52 lengths (±1700m) in 36 mins. And it all felt ok.

Welcome Best!

Hissy · 15/12/2016 09:45

Is your pool 33m then singing?

Good work!!!

SingingAvocado · 15/12/2016 09:58

Yes, Hissy, it is a 33m pool for the three early morning sessions a week. At about 8am they bring the divider back out and make two pools – a 25m training pool and a smaller pool behind it for lessons.

buckingfrolicks · 15/12/2016 19:25

1300m today best swim ever! Felt like a living god, afterwards

How do you manage food? Does the "no swimming for 2hours after you've eaten" rule still apply?

BingBongBam · 15/12/2016 19:44

What's the whip kick? I do about 45 lengths of breast stroke three times a week.
I'm another who got a strange compliment, they said how I was doing well to swim that far for a fat person Xmas ShockXmas Angry

rightsofwomen · 15/12/2016 19:55

I tend to swim first thing ie on a cup of tea, or last thing ie no dinner, and will then have something later. Or not...tend to get the post exercise non-hunger thing.

SingingAvocado · 15/12/2016 20:17

I go first thing too, before I've eaten anything – just get up and go. I'll sometimes bring a banana to eat on the way home.
