I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

See, at our pool the over 50s session is called 'Young at Heart.' I'm not sure . . .

Hissy · 02/12/2016 22:53

Deffo rights send her a link!!!

You'll have to insist on mumsnetter sessions....

When I manage to get the house with a lake.... You're ALL invited!!!

It's off he market atm... But not off my radar....

Hissy · 02/12/2016 22:59

Crosses fingers 😉

rightsofwomen · 02/12/2016 23:42

Are there eels in this lake?

bruffin · 03/12/2016 09:18

Hissy Grin I not sure about eels either.
We have what is called the "leisure 50s" unfortunately for a while it was a bit more "leisure 70". There is a lane for lane swim, but it was taken up with groups of ladies swimming together chatting. I even saw a triangle of two ladies swimming forward and one on her back (vertical swimming) chatting. They were most put out when we came along and wanted to swim properly. They did have the rest of the pool to chat, so not sure why they had to do it in a lane.
I did have a chat with my DS who used to be a lifeguard there, why it was allowed. He said it wasnt worth the hassle of telling them off (think he was a little scared of them bless him) but they do tell them if they are causing a blockage.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 03/12/2016 12:28

Hmm that sort of thing is what puts me off the 'young at heart' sesh here. I'm hardly a swimming ninja ploughing on for hundreds of metres, but I do like to go up and down rather than having to do a weird diagonal thing at the end of each length. I tuck myself against the rope when I have my little rests so as not to be in the way < halo >.
Our pool has wide steps at the side of the shallow end where you could sit and chat and still be in the pool, but the preferred option seems to be to stay at the end with feet dangling in the water, taking up maximum space.

Hissy · 03/12/2016 20:54

Eels? God I hope not!

There's bound to be fish in it tho. It has 2 islands...

buckingfrolicks · 04/12/2016 23:18

Have rtft and ordered new goggles and a lap counter. Thanks. Didn't know such swim goodies existed!

I have just started swimming, for weight loss and fitness. Working alot on technique as I have to get better technique if I'm going to get to your mileage and times. I've invested in an hours' lesson on Tuesday as a kick start. Mixed feelings as not even sure I can swim for an hour!

Luckily for me I have a spa place nearby which does relatively cheap deal for semi retired. So no kids there and v few men. I have no idea how long the pool is though! So I do 20 lengths of what I suspect is a 25 (or less) meter pool

I like this thread!

Do start Woo. I'm so glad I did; I feel so much better for it,

Hissy · 05/12/2016 20:16

Someone on my mile group asked why don't you sign up for the www.aspirechannelswim.co.uk ? and "you could totally do it"

Good grief! Don't ask me questions like THAT!!! God only knows where answering questions like THAT will get me...

Mile first... need to crack the heck on and swim the continuous mile first..

rightsofwomen · 05/12/2016 21:05

Do it woo! Report back and make yourself accountable to us!

I went to mats and flames with DS2. He is getting better.

I have asked my auntie for aquasphere goggles and a teapot

So...shall I drop DS1 at 7am, swim, drop car at garage then run home or miss out the swim. Plan is to swim twice a week. My main concern is my hair, it will freeze to my head and be a very heavy helmet of ice...and give me a rotten headache!

Hissy · 05/12/2016 21:17

I took a knitted hat on Saturday and wore it under my hoody

I looked proper gangsta

In leafy Hampshire village 😂

I dunno... I'll consider it... I want to do the mile first. I'm well on my way

rightsofwomen · 05/12/2016 22:12

You run as well? Did I know this?
I get warm when I run, it's when I stop I get cold.

Hissy · 05/12/2016 23:09

Not running yet, going to give it a go next year, I wore my wooly hat after swimming in Saturday.

I took it off when in Tesco... Grin

rightsofwomen · 06/12/2016 06:35

Smile glad you didn't wander around Tesco like a gangster...standards need to be kept!

I won't swim and run this morning. Aside from anything we need to leave in 26 mins and I am still in my bed!

rightsofwomen · 06/12/2016 07:58

Back from my run. Thankfully most of it was off road as the last bit through the village was an ice rink.

SingingAvocado · 06/12/2016 10:20

Welcome newbies! No swimming for me this week. Whole family down with various colds / sinus infections / ear infections (daughter off school too) … grrrr. Better week next week!

rightsofwomen · 06/12/2016 13:49

Are you poorly as well avo or just looking after the rest of them?

Ear infections and sinus probs are awful. Get soon mini avocados.

SingingAvocado · 06/12/2016 14:44

Thanks so much, Rights. Yes, me too (plus looking after them)! Very unhealthy house at the moment …

rightsofwomen · 07/12/2016 08:45

Reporting a 1K swim in 30 mins.

Bit busy at the pool. Aunt is getting me the goggles for Xmas!

How's the avocado household this morning?

SingingAvocado · 07/12/2016 09:51

Good morning Rights. Things are looking up in our household. My daughter has gone to school today as her ear is much less painful and she really wanted to be back. We all had a solid night's sleep which has made a big difference. My ears are better and I don't need tissues quite as often. A lot brighter generally! Well done on your swim! Wondering whether I should try tomorrow morning or wait until completely clear of cold (getting my energy back now).

rightsofwomen · 07/12/2016 14:18

I'm sure if you're feeling OK then a gentle swim will do you good. Just don't count the lengths - it'll be just to get a good stretch rather than anything else.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 08/12/2016 10:48

700m today, well chuffed. I decided to go for it and aim for mainly freestyle; think I did about 500m so that's a big barrier crossed for me.
Very slow but I'm aiming to build up distance so will continue to try and ignore the dry-haired breasstrokers gliding past me!
Hope you're feeling better Avocado.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 08/12/2016 10:48

Breast-strokers I mean!
