I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

Wow sets of 200 sounds so accomplished! The tingling in my shoulder this morning is trying to remind me that it won't be a case of sailing through (smile).

rightsofwomen · 23/11/2016 11:50

It's me. Now that I am back running I am afraid to say swimming has taken a nose dive! But I really do want to keep it up. It's good for me and once I'm into it I do enjoy it.

So 1K yesterday. Was good. Not busy so just up and down and lost myself.

bruffin · 23/11/2016 15:29

Our swim teacher worked us very hard today

we did 12 x 25 warm up
then we had a session of overarm with flippers which was

6 x full stroke
8 x one arm
6 x legs only
6 x catch up
6 full stroke
then take off flippers another 6 full stroke
and then 6 of any stroke to cool down
then a swim up the pool and dived in and another length back

As the pool was nice and empty, we carried on after the lesson to take us to 70 lengths.

The flippers make you fly but it is hard work Grin not sure what my legs will feel like tomorrow. Im going at 8am with my friend to do my hour swim.

Hissy · 23/11/2016 16:58

Nice session!! How long is your lesson?

Hissy · 23/11/2016 17:00

And where are you? :)

Can you tell I'm itching to get back in the water?

Throat is almost better :)

bruffin · 23/11/2016 17:49

I hour
It is a swim and stamina class. However its split into 3 lane with 2 teachers. It has complete beginners with a woman and man in their 70s or 80s. You have to admire them for itShock

Hissy · 23/11/2016 23:11

Yeah, we have 2 sections, beginners, I started back there 2yrs ago

SingingAvocado · 24/11/2016 13:39

50 x 33m lengths and back to just under 35 mins this morning (I realised that the 37 mins on Tuesday was for 52 lengths – Swimtag keeping better count than me – so not so bad afterall!). Hope you were well enough for your swim today Hissy. Impressed with your class Bruffin.

Hissy · 24/11/2016 21:39

Just got back from the lesson, did 350m warm up, then the lesson, then 400m to finish

So I've hit my month target of 10,000, I'm on 10,025, with a week left!

Could hit 13,000 for the month!!

bruffin · 24/11/2016 22:11

Thats brilliant Hissy. I went this morning and swam for an hour, no idea how many lengths. Im getting a misfit ray for xmas which you use with speedo ap,so hopefully will be able to finally find out. I lose track very quickly so no idea how many i do.

Hissy · 25/11/2016 07:19

You need a watch or counter that you can see the laps,in my opinion

The pool mate does it, I have a battered on I picked up from eBay, they aren't very expensive, prob cheaper than the misfit tbh

Want to get myself the Garnin swim when I've swum my mile...

SingingAvocado · 25/11/2016 20:13

Hissy can you see the laps on the screen as you are doing them on a poolmate? With Swimtag you don't know what you've done until it has been docked and uploaded at the leisure centre. It would be useful to know if you'd got to length 22 or 24 etc.!

Hissy · 25/11/2016 20:37

Yep! See the pics attached, you can set it to show lap in the top rh corner, or metres if you prefer
Time spent is shown large under the lap/metre count - you pause it - which is what is shown on the image here

SingingAvocado · 29/11/2016 12:54

Thanks Hissy. I could have done with one of those today when I accidentally swam 54 lengths instead of 50! Not easy to justify one though when my swim membership includes the use of Swimtag.

Shotgun I was swimming backstroke, getting near the end of the pool, when a hand grasped my wrist! I looked up to see another swimmer, who'd been standing there catching his breath! I don't know why he didn't just move out of the way but I guess it saved giving my hand another bashing!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 29/11/2016 13:10

Grin helpful but disconcerting!
I feel I'm slowly making progress; I seem to be able to manage a slow freestyle now, so I can pace myself rather than panicking about getting the next breath. It's starting to feel quite comfortable now, plus I'm confident using backstroke as a rest.
Maybe I should invest in a lap counter thingie.

rightsofwomen · 29/11/2016 16:02

Hairy arms hissy Wink

I meant to swim early after dropping DS1 off at the bus. Only remembered this as I dropped him off. Woops. So went at lunch time. Could't find my nice goggles, which I last wore to chop onions at the weekend.

Got to pool. 2 men in fast lane. Easily room for 3 of us to go up and down rather than round and round, so suggested it to first chap (fine) and then second (fine), but as we were agreeing, jobsworth lifeguard came over and told us we HAD to go round and round.
Surely they can leave it to the people in the lane to sort themselves out and only intervene if people are being twats. Never had this issue before.

I have a friend who works on front desk so shall ask her whether they've changed the policy. I don't do fancy turns or anything so round and round means stop, shuffle across and start again.

Anyway, both men left after 20 of my laps so I did a further 24 UP AND DOWN ON MY OWN = 1.1K in 35 mins.

I cancelled my full sports centre membership as I really don't use it now I'm running, but got a 3 month swim pass for £35. Brill. I shall aim to go twice a week. It's really good for me to keep it up.

It was over 50s session just after I left. I cannot believe that in less 4 years I can join them. I'll be able to go to women only, over 50s and all the lane/public ones. Excellent!

Hissy · 29/11/2016 17:20

they're not MY arms, rights!!!

Got that off t'internet!!

Hissy · 29/11/2016 17:26

Chopping onions in the swimming goggles... does that work? Would the nose clip come in handy too? Grin

I'm still off, am not well, but no idea exactly what it is, am just trying to take it easy and hope it buggers off the same way it came.

Have swum 10k this month, so I'm relaxed and happy to call that a result. I'll go again with the girls on Thursday which will be lovely, and we'll have our own lesson - lessons proper have stopped now until new year

rightsofwomen · 30/11/2016 08:45

hissy I could do with hairy arms at the moment. I dropped my car off for a service and ran home. Beautiful but very cold and now I can't warm up!

Yes, goggles work great for onion chopping, but you need to remember where you put them afterwards! I don't have a nose clip, but I reckon that would be a boon.

You've been poorly for ages. Have you been checked out?

10K is fab! Well done.

SingingAvocado · 30/11/2016 09:20

Rights – swimming goggles for chopping onions is a fab idea!

Yes, Hissy, it probably would be good to see a doctor?

TeenyfTroon · 30/11/2016 12:34

Just found this thread. I haven't RTFT but I noticed way back someone asking about learning front crawl at 45. I learned at 58 (3 years ago) so yes, you can do it. I spent a few weeks having to gasp at the end of every length, but I just built up slowly. I swim twice a week and do 66 25m lengths, breaststroke and crawl. I love it!

Hissy · 30/11/2016 16:11

I had a sore throats and fever last week, Monday

Got a bit better, bit bunged up still but ok

Then ran hot again on Monday, achey lions again

Still bunged up.

Non-appearing period (have done poas, negative ) you can't have a false negative 2 weeks after AF is due, can you? If it's negative, its negative, right?

Think it might be menopause starting, am 48.

Have appointment booked for next weds.

Hissy · 30/11/2016 16:11
