I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

Swam 1K today.

I'm back running properly now, so I'm afraid swimming has dropped off a bit. In fact I got some sort of automatic email from the sports centre saying they'd noticed I hadn't been as much lately!

I think the main problem is busy pools. If I can switch off and not have to look out for other people then I really quite enjoy it. Today was busy though. I am going to keep it up though as I really think it's good for me.

cottonsandlinens · 02/11/2016 22:13

Well done rights. I agree about busy pools. Mine is generally ok but I went earlier than usual today and it was a bit manic which means I spend more time waiting at the end so I don't either crash into someone or to let a quicker person go past.
I did drills today using the hand paddles. Strangely the swim tag thinks I'm doing back stroke when I use the paddles but I can't see I'm doing anything different with my stroke. It's really weird.

weegierama · 03/11/2016 15:05

Well inspired by all the early morning swims here I was in pool by 7.30. Did my week 4 routine and in work feeling fantastic by 9am. Think this could be the way forward.

SingingAvocado · 04/11/2016 12:05

Well done Weegie. I got talking for the first time yesterday to someone I always see when I go swimming and she was saying she goes straight to work from swimming and likes the feeling of getting it all done at the start of the day. She also swims on Sunday and when I said that was very dedicated she shrugged and said that she likes to eat and swimming is how she pays for the luxury of eating what she wants!

Hissy · 05/11/2016 20:40

I had a good day too, took myself off to the pool I've been avoiding due to it being busy and the lane etiquette gets tricky at times etc.

I had about an hour so I just swam what felt right.

Did a total of 1650, with 750 pretty much continuous laps.

Happy with that!

I think I'm going to have a go at week 2 of the Zero to 1 mile programme and see how I get on, then the week 3

Fed up with the blocked nose again tho!

SingingAvocado · 09/11/2016 13:53

Hello everybody. It has got a bit quiet on here. Hope you are all well and enjoying your swimming. Day off for me today but back in the pool early tomorrow morning. Well done Hissy!

Hissy · 09/11/2016 16:54

Taking today off, seeing as I finally have my nose back... want to keep it that way for the lesson tomoorw

I can always stay on afterwards for some distance.

Am on 3500m for the month so far! Am aiming to do no less than 1000m per session ideally 1200m

weegierama · 09/11/2016 18:52

I've been doing sessions of 50 straight lengths. Going for my mile attempt next week

Hissy · 10/11/2016 07:05

Oooh weegie!!! That's awesome!!

weegierama · 10/11/2016 10:04

Thanks hissy. Suspect I'm very slow! My swimovate arrived this morning so hoping that will motivate me to focus on speed once I've got to the distance I want

SingingAvocado · 10/11/2016 10:35

Weegie and Hissy are doing us proud!

I didn't use Swimtag today as it hadn't been set up yet and the newish receptionist didn't know what to do. She offered to get the manager but I needed to get on. It felt quite good not to be so pressured actually but I suppose the point of having Swimtag is that it makes you try harder!

Hissy · 10/11/2016 16:25

Genuinely don't think about the time.

Get the technique right and the time will take care of itself.

Relax head and neck completely to bring legs up, bubble the legs to balance and help propulsion, arms bent on exit to keep kinetic energy, lead with elbow.

Water is 8x more resistant than air, so just chucking yourself at it, trying to fight it will just bugger up your joints and wear you out

Steady, consistent and streamlined

If you can time yourself, time a fast length and then time a relaxed and comfy one...

Try and tell the difference between the times, there won't be much difference :)

Can i join Grin

Have been swimming lessons for 14 years as they make me go. However we used to do 30mins which really wasnt enough so now we have an hour lesson.
Yesterdays example of a lesson was
18 (6 of each stroke) warm up
then backstroke work most of it with flippers so ended up doing 50 x 25m lengths then i did 18 afterwards in breaststroke to take me to over a mile.

Over the summer when i was going 3 to 4 times a week swimming for an hour without stopping mostly in breaststroke but with 10 forearm and about 10 backstroke. I have music on a waterproof mp3 , which is mostly musicals because if find they are about the right rhythm, although there is bit of Script and Sam Smith in there.
I would love to know how many lengths i do, probably around 80 lengths, as i am not that fast, but i dont stop at all. I want a swimming fitness watch. I am looking at the garmin swim or the poolmate at the moment. Would like one that analyses stroke.
I have mentioned to the teacher about the swim tag and she sounds interested.

bruffin · 10/11/2016 16:45

Sorry meant to say since winter finding the motivation to get up and go early very hard. I work three days a week so have to go on my days off. I have lesson on wednesday and join a friend on thursday morning, but not been well so have missed some of those normal times.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 10/11/2016 19:19

Bruffin hi and welcome! 80 lengths non-stop! < bows down >
Well I showed up today, quite proud pf myself as I hauled my lazy arse out of bed and was in the water by 7.30 (I usually drop DS off at school first). Had to get out after14 lengths though, as was cutting it fine time wise.
I made a start on Hissy's zero to 1 mile though, so did it in blocks of 8 and 6, which was a first for me; I usually rest every 2. An improvement!
Must look into this swimtag of which you all speak.

bruffin · 10/11/2016 20:15

Swimtag is provided by the pool. Im going to suggest it for our pool, my teacher sounded interested but as its council run then its the powers that be need to give the go ahead.

I can do breaststroke all day, but my poor bladder cant take anything more than an hourSmile.

bruffin · 10/11/2016 20:21

Our swim teachers have always emphasized the glide in breaststroke. One of the drills we do is see how few strokes we can do in a length. Ive got it down to 6,but my friends can do 5.

bruffin · 10/11/2016 20:21

Not that i do 6 normally.

Lifeisabeach · 10/11/2016 21:00

I've been a bit slack with my swimming since half term, but trying to get back to twice a week now. I did 1.5km on Tuesday. I'm not getting any quicker though and not really sure how to.

Just got a Garmin watch for my birthday that can be used for pool swims, so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I normally just do 40-60 lengths without stopping, but I'm wondering whether to use the watch to do sets, say 3x400m with recoveries or something, to see if I can up my pace over a shorter distance.

Hissy · 10/11/2016 21:45

Just finished my lesson. Jeez she worked us hard... at 7.25 I talked myself out of staying on for the public session...

At 7.30 I told myself that the mile won't swim itself..

So I did my first week 2 session and then another 100m to round that up to 1000m. So a good q
1500m for the day id say...

5000m for the month so far...

SingingAvocado · 11/11/2016 09:28

Welcome Bruffin!

Hissy · 11/11/2016 23:31

Oh for the love of God, does ANYONE have a tip for dealing with chlorine allergy? I can't breathe at all thru my nose, it's driving me mad!

I have sterimed. But not sure if I'm using it correctly, I'll take anything... I have a nose clip but not tried it yet

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 11/11/2016 23:57

I can't swim without a noseclip Hissy. But lately I've been putting a discreet dab of vaseline up each nostril as well - in fact, you've made me realise why I've been sneezing today - I didn't bother the last couple of swims. I find the skin inside starts to get itchy and cracked without it.

Hissy · 12/11/2016 15:59

News: all hail the nose clip revolting contraption that it is it works!

I can breathe!!

Did 100m warm up, week 2 programme 900m and then a slinky leisurely 100m cool down

I also beat my time for 1000m (just) but I'll take it!!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 12/11/2016 22:03

Yay the disgusting noseclip!
