Marathon Training

Have anyone else just started marathon training and wants to support each other?

I made up a 2L jug of squash and did my best to get through it each day. On a normal day I barely drink 200ml Blush

Hydration is essential for carb loading though - and I recovered so much quicker after B'mouth. I was also fitter... I did Brighton on two runs a week training and a crappy knee injury. Oh, and carry on with your marathon diet for a week after the run. That helped too.

Will stop waffling before I convince myself to do another marathon

Anglaise1 · 05/01/2016 12:35

I think carb loading helps, but I hate doing it. I have terrible GI problems so before a big race am supposed to eat nothing but rice and ham or pasta and ham for at least 3 days.
But runners like Seb Coe and Brendan Foster just ate normally. Foster ate what his wife did, just a little more. Before a race he drank tea, ate toast (with honey if it was a big race) and after a race drank a shandy. Simples!
And many of today's athletes still can't better his times even with all the nutitional advice dished out.
I drink lots of water, just not enough when I do a long run because I don't feel thirsty. I think I'll be OK but often get a headache an hour after finishing because I didn't drink enough during the run.

Pippioddstocking · 05/01/2016 21:51

Summer - my closest time is 418 but my last 5 have been trail so I'm hoping that road should make a difference .
When I got my 4.18 my 10 k time was 54 minutes and half time was 1.50 so 4.30 should certainly be achievable for you .

Sandunes - really interesting about the water and carb loading . I have to admit to not having the best diet in the world . I often forget to eat meals and snack on the go ( all the wrong foods) . Perhaps I should include diet change in this new plan. Did you stay in Brighton the night before?

SandunesAndRainclouds · 05/01/2016 23:06

I live near Brighton, so luckily slept in my own bed the night before!

Carb loading only works if you also deplete - similar to the 5:2 diet. I'm crap at eating regularly so figured I was probably depleted anyway 😀

You need the fluids to make the sugar part of the carbs stick properly in your liver. I gained quite a lot of weight in the 2 or 3 weeks before the big day.

Fascinating stuff.

yetanotherdeskmove · 06/01/2016 09:37

What do you mean about depleting sandunes?

I tried a mile at tempo pace last night, I thought I was going to die Grin

I need to sort out my diet too, but we have a lot of snacks left from christmas. dilemma........

Anglaise1 · 06/01/2016 10:04

yetanotherdesk my 2016 motto is 'Eat to run, not run to eat' the latter of which I was doing rather too much of pre Christmas. I want to lose a few pounds just to get down to ideal running weight, not easy with marathon training but I think 1lb = 1 minute off marathon time. The problem is not to lose muscle in the process.

CMOTDibbler · 06/01/2016 10:24

Wow, is that right Anglaise? I'd better get on and lose some more fat!

yetanotherdeskmove · 06/01/2016 10:57

That’s a good motto, I’m very guilty of looking at my calories burned on Strava and thinking ooh what can I eat for that??

OP posts:
Anglaise1 · 06/01/2016 13:26

Talking of calories burnt on Strava, when I don't wear my heart monitor it has me down as burning around 630 cals for 10kms. When I wear my heart monitor with my Garmin the calories burned go down to around 420 Confused
I must stop looking at it too.
Food is Fuel, Food is Fuel, Food is Fuel....

yetanotherdeskmove · 06/01/2016 14:25

mine had me at 588 for 5m last night but I do take it with a pinch of salt tbh. I find it too uncomfortable to wear an hrm when running so don't bother any more.

Ideally I have about 3/4 of a stone to lose but I have maintained this weight for about 2 years now so not sure if it will shift without a drastic change to my diet which I'm not ready to do yet.

OP posts:
Anglaise1 · 06/01/2016 14:45

I'm 5'8 and 60kgs, would like to get to 57 - 58kgs. Saying that I did a 10k PB at 45 mins just before Christmas at this weight, but maybe it would have been even better if I'd been a little lighter. I have no idea what my perfect running weight is, even having read all the Matt Fitzgerald books on the subject!

yetanotherdeskmove · 06/01/2016 15:39

I'm 59 kg but only 5ft3. Well done one the 10k time, I'm a way off that!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 06/01/2016 17:14

Depleting carbs means you eat none at all for a set period of time, and then you add carbs into your diet for a set period of time, then don't eat etc etc. The depletion tricks your body into storing extra sugars. I didn't do this, I just massively increased how much I ate in the weeks of my very long runs and for the week before marathon day.

The motto food is fuel was in my head a lot. I've had issues with food for a very long time and it took a while to reset my mind that it was 'OK' to eat.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 06/01/2016 17:15

Sub 50 is my aim this year. My 10km PB is 52mins so a little way to go.

SummerHouse · 06/01/2016 19:59

Oh a pound = a minute! I am totally done with dieting other than to eat more healthy with less empty calories. I guess that's a diet!

On a totally different note.... Foam roller? Any thoughts. I just look at them and wonder what to do with it. I am also not liking the ice idea at all.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 06/01/2016 21:53

Foam roller = torture, but works.

Ice bath is pretty much the same torture, but works like a dream (for me anyway). The trick is to put about an inch of tepid water in the bath, sit in and then run the cold tap.

SummerHouse · 06/01/2016 21:55

Thanks sandunes I am not liking the sound of it but I think I need to try it.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 06/01/2016 22:18

It's really not that bad if you run it while sitting in it. I keep a jumper on 😂

Getting into a fully run ice bath makes me sing opera by that I really mean shriek

yetanotherdeskmove · 09/01/2016 12:19

Shudder at ice baths!!!!

I had a great fun, wet ten miles this morning. I embraced the rain :)

Hope you all have good running weekends.

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 09/01/2016 12:43

It didn't rain on me at all today Grin. And I've come back to an empty house as ds is off at bike race training, so a few minutes of peace as well

Anglaise1 · 09/01/2016 17:25

16 miles in the wind and rain. I hope the conditions are better for the marathon itself! Managed to hold the speed quite well this week despite the wind.

MrsHarveySpecter · 10/01/2016 11:12

Hi everyone. I'm currently training for the London Marathon, my first. All going well so far except for a minor strain which is responding well to treatment. I'm enjoying the training. It's a bit of me time between full time work and two small DCs. I'm missing a more varied exercise routine though. Prior to marathon training I ran once or twice a week with spinning, bikram yoga and baby pump classes. Now it's just running, weights at home and just one yoga class. I'd love to take up swimming (I'm a terrible swimmer!) but maybe that's one for after 24 April!

Imbroglio · 10/01/2016 12:18

I've found spinning valuable cross-training so maybe keep that in? I also swim but its more for general fitness/relaxation. I always sleep well after a swim!

Boobz · 12/01/2016 10:32

Hello - can I join? I joined the normal running thread briefly, but this looks more relevant to me.

Am running the Rome marathon on April 10th.

Am following Hal Higdon Novice training schedule - am on week 7. I am also at a fasting clinic in Germany, so am surviving on less than 200 cals a day. So far I have been able to keep up with schedule, but have 6 miles tomorrow (am on Day 8 of my fast, so very much burning fat reserves at the moment!) and on Sat I have 12 miles (but will have "broken" the fast the day before with some apple puree and buts) so will be interesting to see if I can do the run or not, having fasted for nearly 2 weeks.

And then back to normal next week (food wise) - and will be almost half way through training.

Have not done a marathon before but best 10km time is 44 mins, and best half mara is 1hr 43 so am hoping for a sub 4hr debut. Was a lot fitter before though - am building up after a rubbish year health wise last year.

Will see if that running and food Radio 4 broadcast is a podcast now - sounds interesting.

Boobz · 12/01/2016 10:33

nuts not buts
