So, we seem to have filled up the 4th thread. Anyone want to join me here?

OP posts:
DontDoItDi · 23/08/2015 09:24

W8R2 this morning. Hot and sweaty. Bleah. But I ran a fairly straight route today and didn't have to wait to cross any junctions, and (according to freemaptools) I jogged 4.2 km in 28 minutes. So not too far off.

Deianira · 23/08/2015 13:26

Bit of a mess-up here, so am effectively posting with no good news, in order to shame myself into not doing it again. Really needed to run today as I did my first two early in the week and then massively procrastinated my third - today was really the latest I could put it off to! But then managed to put ALL my running gear in the wash this morning so that it's somewhat unlikely I'll manage to get anything dry by the end of today. Definitely feel guilty - if I'd just done the run yesterday then there would be no problem!

Congratulations to all those still going and increasing their distances and times! DontDoItDi - particularly interested in your 4.2km, did you have to do anything extra to cover enough distance in the increased time, or have you found it's just increased naturally? My first two 25 min runs were the same distance, so I'm wondering if I'll need to actually try and speed up a bit for the third.

DontDoItDi · 23/08/2015 18:28

You can do it Deinara, tomorrow if not today! I don't have the laundry problem because I have a heap of T shirts and socks, and the jogging shorts don't often see the inside of the washing basket Blush

I’m not even sure if I really am running that much further because I don’t have a very accurate way to measure. But one thing I’ve started to do over the last week, is to have a couple of short bursts (maybe a minute each) of slightly faster running and then slow down to a jog again. I think that has been helping me go a bit faster overall.

rowingboat · 23/08/2015 21:09

Hi everyone
Dontdoit thank you! You sound a bit more cheerful than when you were getting bored with your route. Where do you run?
Glow where are you? Sounds lovely, I mean running back along the beach! Is running on a beach ok. Bit sandy?
Deianira sorry hope I spelt that right? You sound very game of thrones. I hear you. I struggle with washing my running stuff between runs. I just bought a new pair of joggers, which are a bit suspect, but need to wash the others. Poo!
Fuzzy you sound a bit further ahead than me, but I hope to be able to do more soon. Thanks for the info about visual migraines. I was ok today, but it could have been a hormone blip. I don't know much about your programme, is it on the web?
I did my week6 run 1. Probably should have gone out later, it was a bit hot. Looks like it will ramp up in the next two runs.
How do you guys know how far you have run? I'm still doing time, it's easier at them moment.

rowingboat · 25/08/2015 16:52

Woohoo run 2 of week 6 under the belt. I stopped to talk to someone in the way back/com down and stood around for a while have now seized up. Tin man emoticon. Smile

GlowWine · 25/08/2015 19:49

rowing well done! Ah yes seizing up - after my run along the beach yesterday I stopped at the shop to get rolls for breakfast. Stood in line, walked back home, forgot all about stretching out, was reminded about it much later when I was really creaky getting up!
I'm in Holland at the moment, so far the wind has been really light but tomorrow could be a challenge. I try to go the easier path against the wind first and then come along the beach with the wind behind me. It was gorgeous yesterday morning, see pic (if I can manage) Running along a beach is fine as long as you are able to stick to the hard sand near the water. I walked across the soft bit, and took the photo. I have managed to keep running for the whole 5k in past years, just doing all of it along the water's edge, but this year I'm not as fit and heavier tooBlush. Sand is not a problem really, but getting you feet wet, as I did skipping from one sandbank to another, is not so nice

You're also asking about measuring distance. I think most people use apps on their smartphone that uses the GPS signal, and I have a GPS watch I got years before I switched my phone. BUT do run by time and don't worry about distance or speed. I did for months, sticking to 30mins but noticing eventually that I was getting further and further in the time and I wanted to know. So I manually plotted it on MapMyRun on the computer and then got the watch for Christmas.

Deianira · 26/08/2015 10:25

Thanks for all the encouragement - sadly once I start making excuses I seem to be unable to stop, so I only finally did w7r3 this morning. It was horrific, which is a good reminder to me of why skipping runs is such a terrible terrible idea. Still, at least it's done now! Onwards and upwards.

For measuring distance I'm still using Runkeeper on my phone, as I was using it previously and like to keep a regular log of runs. But I agree with GlowWine - focus absolutely on the time first, as distance varies so much anyway at this stage. Sometimes in the same amount of time I run .5km more/less just depending on weather, energy levels etc., so it can be far harder to keep steady. Once I'm doing 30-40 minutes every time I'll start taking the distances more seriously, but for now it's just for me to keep a vaguely curious eye on really.

That looks like an amazing location Glow - I am jealous!

rowingboat Yes, I quite often have to avoid washes in order to have enough kit... I've managed over 2 years to get together enough tops/leggings for 3 runs a week and some left when the wash goes on, but sports bras are my problem item. They cost SO much that it's hard to build up a decent stock, so they may not always get washed with the rest... Blush. Good luck with the last run of W6 and W7 - despite my excuses I am actually enjoying 7 more than 6 as it's nice to be doing the same thing now, and I also had problems with getting stiff even between intervals, so longer runs are definitely working for me. Hope you enjoy it too!

Deianira · 26/08/2015 10:27

Forgot to say, thanks for the tip Don'tDoItDi - I've heard from other people that they did similar quick minutes mixed in with 'normal' minutes to increase their overall pace, so might try that once I'm on the full length of time! Sounds like a nice steady way of doing things.

DontDoItDi · 27/08/2015 20:28

Love your running location glow. Our local parkrun is along the coast too though not quite as pretty, another reason why I’d like to try it. But it’s a bus ride away so not a route I can run regularly.

Week 9 Run 1 this morning – that’s 30 minutes! Still did 4.2km(ish) I do try not to worry too much about speed or distance. When the running time gets longer I slow down to make sure I finish so I don’t always go any further at least not right away. I mostly run on suburban streets and sometimes I plot my route on a mapping website which isn’t very accurate especially if I am looping round closes and going back on myself to avoid crossings, or just going round and round the duck pond. Hopefully it will build up later. Mostly I want to get to 5K so I can try the parkrun!

TheoriginalLEM · 27/08/2015 20:39

Can i join? I have been running a couple of months now - can manage 5k but its SLOW. I have started getting hip pain again :( I have had gait analysis and have support trainers. Doesn't help being a size 20 and aged 45 Blush. I run to help with my anxiety.

TheoriginalLEM · 27/08/2015 23:30

sorry didn't mean to kill the thread

Deianira · 27/08/2015 23:52

Welcome TheoriginalLEM! Don't worry about silence in the thread, I think a lot of us wait to post until after we've run so we can report on that (certainly I do, I feel guilty posting without a proper run to record!) Glad to have you with us however, I am always encouraged to hear that people are running a full 5k - makes it seem less impossible for me! Hip pain is less positive though - do you know what's causing that? Did your gait analysis flag anything up?

DontDoItDi · 28/08/2015 15:39

Welcome TheorginalLEM. The thread's going through a quietish period. Impressed that you're doing the full 5K after only a couple of months! I do find running relaxing tho I'm not sure how much the effects last afterwards.

weaseleyes · 28/08/2015 16:15

Welcome! I am wild with jealousy you're managing 5k!

I had a week off running as I went away for a few days. As these days involved rather excessive eating, I feared I wouldn't be able to manage the usual 30 mins, but I did. I'm still only managing about 3.5k (even less today as I went so slowly out of anxiety!), but I've added another lap of the park to my route and I'll just see if I can manage to speed up a little to cover more ground gradually.

I have another week off work, then I have to start my next phase of serious dieting. I think if a someone in a bootcamp was made to carry all my excess weight in a rucksack whilst running it would be seen as cruel and unusual!

Deianira · 29/08/2015 14:14

W8R1 today - after all the faffing about last week I was VERY slow, but I finished, at least! The first attempt at a new distance is always so exciting - although, also, really grim. Hopefully the next 2 will be nicer, before the big 30 minutes hits!

DontDoItDi · 29/08/2015 15:17

I know I shouldn't worry about distance but feeling pleased because I did 4.6K in 30 minutes today! Never gone that far before! Now my legs are very tired.

Deianira I forgot to say - I'm glad you got out on Wednedsday after all. And today too Smile

TheoriginalLEM · 29/08/2015 17:06

the 5k is taking me nearly an hour though. am thinking i should stick to a time and try and speed up.

DontDoItDi · 29/08/2015 18:06

TheoriginalLEM I don't think it matters which way round you do it, whether you speed up or run for longer. When I've done the last C5K run (only one to go!) I'm going to try the C25K+ podcasts - there's one for going faster and one for running longer and I'm planning to have a go at both of them (not on the same day obvs Smile) and just see what works. Running for nearly an hour is really good exercise anyway so I'm impressed!

weaseleyes · 30/08/2015 11:23

After being spectacularly slow on Friday I was back to normally slow this morning. I found this rather exciting as it proves I have two speeds. OK, neither are impressive, but I feel it's progress! I can now dream of reaching fairly slow one day.

GlowWine · 30/08/2015 13:40

Hello everyone I'm back on British soil now. Back to pounding my familiar local pavements. Today I could still not motivate myself not to do any walking. I made sure I 'ran' for 5k, by covering more than 5.5 with about 3 short walking spells... Those who commented on my holiday location, yes it was so scenic but running 2.5k into a steady headwind really killed me Grin and did nothing to improve my stamina to keep going for the whole 5k....

Hi TheorginalLEM and welcome. I'm in my mid-40s too so I think you're in good company here.

Everyone else, you're all making great progress, more so than can be said for me! Deianeira glad to see you managed to pick up where you left off!

rowingboat · 31/08/2015 12:37

Hi all
Well done to anyone managing 5k, can't even imagine at the moment.
Again it's been another password changing, forgetting and giving up saga this week, otherwise I would have osteo before now.
I hope this password stays for a bit.
I finished week 6 on Friday and did the 22 minute run, was ok. It was a lovley evening, with the dog walkers out, but before the time that the muggers and murderers come out. It was getting a bit too dark by the time I went home though.
Do you intend to run in the dark come autumn/winter?
Join a gum and run on a treadmill until spring?
This weekend I have had a tummy bug thing and a sinus thing so put off my run until today. Only managed 18 minutes of the 25, so ugh the redo week six until I feel a bit better (got walks in it still)
Is it better to keep running when ill or scale back ? Don't want to get worse.

GlowWine · 31/08/2015 19:03

Rowing yes I run in the dark. It does restrict my options somewhat as I need to stick to lit roads, and I also adjust my schedule to Saturday and Monday daytime where I can fit it in as it gets colder. Or I stop running altogether November to February as in the past two years! I have never yet tried a treadmill, but a running friend who really lives in the sticks, has no lit/paved options and finds her routes get too muddy reluctantly switches indoors.

MrTCakes · 31/08/2015 20:12

Hello, can I join?
I have just completed week 1 and found it ok (haven't run for 10 years!). I wanted to ask, is anyone else only running twice a week? I could do 3 runs but 2 of them would have to be on consecutive days which would hurt... or will twice a week be ok?

Deianira · 01/09/2015 09:41

Thanks for the encouragement all - I am trying really hard not to let myself get 'stuck' again and keep progressing, but it's so hard sometimes to keep going and get out for a run when there's so much else on! I'm really impressed with how well everyone else is doing - it inspires me to keep trying to sort myself out!

rowing I normally do one run a week in the dark once it gets to winter - so one is in the morning at/after sunrise, one at the weekend (normally just before lunch), and then one in the evening before dinner (6ish), as I'm bad at doing 2 morning runs a week. I always stick to running around the neighbourhood for the evening one even though it's not that late, not least because I don't want to fall over in a hole or anything. I'd agree with Glow that it also tends to be the one I drop in a busy week, as it is a bit of a pain. I am very lucky though - I can adjust my work schedule a lot as it's very flexible, or work from home a couple of days a week, so I can occasionally also do a lunchtime run during the week which helps.

I don't run when I'm ill if at all possible - recovering/getting a minor cold, maybe, but occasionally those develop into bad coughs if I push it, so even then I try not to. And, like you've found, my performance is so awful if I do keep running when ill that it's not really worth it - it just seems to delay getting better for no especially good reason.

Welcome MrTCakes! As may be apparent from the above, I do quite often run twice a week because I manage to provide myself lots of excuses not to do the third - but I really don't recommend it if there's any way to avoid it. I find both runs are much harder with only two, and I never feel quite ready to increase the distance/times. Three seems to be the perfect balance. If you are running 2 days in a row, can you do one morning, one evening to space them out? Or would they be at the same time each day? That might be quite hard on your muscles etc. while you're just starting.

GlowWine · 01/09/2015 10:23

Good morning everyone - just a quick note to share my success: after struggling for weeks running with walking interruptions I finally finally ran 5k in one piece today. No stopping, except the stupid loops I need to do once at the traffic lights for crossing a major road... And I felt just FINE Grin
