suspect there are a few of us preparing for a spring marathon - any interest in chat about training schedules, black toe nails and so on?

I found one but it's sold out, but there is another half so I could do that but push myself a bit instead? am not sure if that's quite how it works

Can I join in too? Am doing the brighton marathon. My first marathon. Am getting really worried because I am sloooooooooow! Have got up 16 miles on my long run, with a short stop for toilet breaks. But keep worrying that I am too slow. I'm running at about 11.45 for long runs, aiming to do marathon in 5 hrs. I did half in 2.30, but is this too slow?

Mitchy1nge · 15/01/2015 12:05

am aiming for that sort of time! in fact about 5:15

obviously would be amazing if could zoom round somehow at my 10k pace but in the real world am planning 11:30-12:00 as my pace - the distance is already a huge demand for me without the stress of trying to maintain any speed

they do say to double your hm time and add 30 minutes, will you do another half a bit nearer the time to check that you are on target?

OP posts:
mumpossible · 15/01/2015 20:13

That makes me feel better! Had visions of me running all alone while everyone zooms off!

Have been looking for another half but not sure when!

InnocenceAndExperience · 15/01/2015 22:20

I just want to get to the start in one piece and get round. It took me 5.22 the first time, 9 years ago, so I'm not over-promising on this one!

However, the thing about running slowly is that you are running for a long time!

Did a 10k tonight. Meant to do it yesterday but all too easily put off by TOTM cramps.

Mitchy1nge · 15/01/2015 22:32

it obviously didn't put you off, would be really pleased with 5:22, don't think mine is an especially flat course either

am struggling to stick to The Plan though (which don't even have, just a sort of vague idea of staying around the half distance for next few weeks) did 8 sort of fastish miles today and someone suggested that could substitute for the long slow run (but that was meant to be 12) I could do 12 tomorrow with a couple of stops (a minute or two, am going out with a group doing a slow 10k) but is not quite the same as going continuously, will I get all the wear and tear and none of the benefits? there won't be an opportunity over the weekend

is a bit annoying that was in a nice running routine before Christmas and now when I need to knuckle down and be consistent I seem to have all sorts of problems (lately my back)

InnocenceAndExperience · 15/01/2015 22:43

I think I would have been faster in a bigger race but it was in the New Forest and I was on my own for a lot of the time after the fast runners zoomed off. I'm hoping that the extra crowds at Brighton will spur me on! I also know a few others who are running this time.

Mitchy1nge · 16/01/2015 12:16

oh god I bet I will be all alone at the back and the last one in, after clock has stopped running at 6 hours

oh god

hate going through things alone!

lovealotbear · 16/01/2015 12:19

Would love to join in too. I am first time marathon runner and will be doing Brighton Marathon. I am following my training plan as best I can but struggling to fit it in with everything else! The last two weekends I have done 10 miles and I am aiming to go up to 11 miles this weekend.

Mitchy1nge · 16/01/2015 12:30

hello! welcome! just think how much tougher it will get Grin which programme are you following?

seems to be a lot of you doing Brighton

LadyBlaBlah · 16/01/2015 12:41

Silverstone half in March then Paris marathon in April.
Shitting it.

Doing about 17 miles a week atm at 9 mins.

Need to drastically up my distances ??

Pleaseputyourshoeson · 16/01/2015 19:09

I'm doing my first marathon on Good Friday. A tiny race. I got up to 15 miles on long run before Christmas and then knee began to play up, it get stiff, inflamed after and a bit of IT band issue too so I took the Christmas hols v easy and now finally invested in custom orthotics which I have yet to run in. Just did a 10 mile kong run this week and hoping to build up long runs again by a mile a week. Knee not perfect but it seems to settle by next day. Am foam rollers get etc and hoping I can stick with it and not get any more injuries and that my knee will hold up to see the marathon through. My race has all of 100 entrants! I figured low key might be best for me!

InnocenceAndExperience · 17/01/2015 17:00

Very slow 13/14 miles today. Had to do a bit of walk/run to keep going!

leemur · 18/01/2015 07:30

That's good mileage innocence
I managed 4 miles yesterday but there was a couple of inches of snow on the ground which made it quite hard going! I think I'm over my cold mostly now so should be training as normal next week - weather permitting! I think it's going to be pretty icy. I think my leg hip/leg niggle might still be there after nearly a week off but it's very intermittent so I might ignore it and see what happens.
Happy long run of you're heading out today!

InnocenceAndExperience · 18/01/2015 08:56

leemur I feel more positive about it today because I feel a bit stiff but nothing worse, which is a relief as it was a jump in mileage from my previous 10.

I normally do my long one on Sundays so I'm also a day ahead!

Mitchy1nge · 18/01/2015 09:23

am about to do my long one, although have been ready since 7 so am obviously in no hurry! I HATE THE COLD.

I should do at least 13 but have told self I only have to do 10 (so can finish the week on 29 miles which is ok) unless I'm really truly feeling it, and I can walk if my back hurts too much. It will be too cold to walk though. I am a summer runner :(

How do u plan out your 15 mile plus run? I'm doing an autumn marathon and worried about this- do u plan a loo stop??

Mitchy1nge · 19/01/2015 12:19

I've never needed the loo during a run before (although v often spend first few miles of any length run thinking 'I need a wee I really need a wee I need a wee AND a poo' but is psychological) we don't exactly have public loos so not sure what I would do, pause my garmin and wee in a ditch? Confused

OP posts:
isittheweekendyet · 19/01/2015 16:41

How was the long run mitchy?

I've also never needed the loo on any of my half marathons but do go about 15 times before the race starts! Wonder if I'll need to go as I start my longer training runs??

Mitchy1nge · 19/01/2015 17:35

it was only ten miles but each one was surprisingly enjoyable and I went so slowly I had lots left in the tank for a 'sprint' finish for the final mile! it's a good route because some of it is in town and I see lots of other runners, and the few miles of road are not too scary - I will experiment next week with adding what I hope will be three miles on to it, and that will be it until after my next HM which is Feb 8th

then am not sure, will consult club friends and see if they have routes I can do (am a bit rubbish about roads) but everyone is training for marathons right now so it's good idea to connect with local runners on garmin or similar so you can get ideas for routes

how's everyone else doing in this wintry weather? Despite the cold I was quite excited to run with a tiny bit of snow on the ground today Grin

OP posts:
LadyBlaBlah · 19/01/2015 23:03

Had a slippery run on Friday, slowed me right down with icy paths all the way. Then a hideous (gale force?) windy, sleety, snowy coastal long run on Sunday.

I'm wondering why I'm putting myself through this right now Confused

Remind me why I'm doing a marathon someone please?

InnocenceAndExperience · 19/01/2015 23:03

Didn't get time for a run today, so 'grumpy'. It was beautiful here this morning!

Mitchy1nge · 19/01/2015 23:11

some inspiration
