suspect there are a few of us preparing for a spring marathon - any interest in chat about training schedules, black toe nails and so on?

hhmmnn.. maybe i need to try high5s then

it's not funny Grin

LadyBlaBlah · 26/01/2015 12:20

Just reporting running activity........and I've definitely been hindered by PMT this week - does anyone else get this? I lose all motivation and the "force yourself out" feeling is increased 10 fold.

Buuuut I did bikram yoga on Friday and my long run yesterday (12 miles at good pace) and so only missed my short run on Friday. And, I.Am.Not.Beating.Self.Up.About.It.

PMT nearly over and will be back on it this week.

I will have to start with the gels soon so I read the info with interest. I'd prefer not to vom as I'm running to be honest.

isittheweekendyet · 26/01/2015 13:23

Morning hips, and welcome. Also a first time marathoner here so am finding the thread very motivational!

I uses sis gels and haven't had any unfortunate side effects yet Grin

Went out for a quick 5k at lunchtime after yesterday's long run, and ended up running my fastest 1mile ever at 8.16!! Not sure that'll ever happen again, some days are just easier than others. Have so much respect for those of you that can run that pace all the time.

Pleaseputyourshoeson · 26/01/2015 15:48

Mitchy - from www.power cap.co.uk
Gels - I use SIS or if I'm organised Push energy gels as they don't have any icky stuff in them and are all natural. But you can only get them online I think. I tried a High5 one that came free in a race bag and didn't have any ill effects.
5k from me on day 1 of my period. Uncooperative feeling body today. Mind was up for it but body felt like it was saying nooooo. It was like running through treacle - a fatigued feeling body and my knees feel as if they are impact tired. Wee twinges here and there. I even took a couple of 10 sec walk breaks - my idea of ' interval training' today hahaha! I felt like a pet being pulled on the lead that doesn't want to go to the vet! It was horrible hehheh! Still I went. Hoping tomorrow I'll feel springier.

JennyOnTheBlocks · 26/01/2015 16:00

since my hysterectomy last May, pmt etc is no longer the bane of my life (obvs), but i used to get far more leg-heavy when I was on my period, as well as the usual cramps etc

it was SiS gels that made me windy, will check out Push ones, thanks for that

Mitchy1nge · 26/01/2015 21:52

thanks please :) have ordered this: www.powercap.co.uk/runningcaps.htm hope is the right one

happy birthday to ME

That's the same as the one I have.! V handy for rooting for things when you are camping, reading in the dark and of course... Running! I've done a few spooky night runs in the woods and it's been great!

BafanaThesober · 27/01/2015 08:58

Have saved a link for that cap.
Looks like a good idea for camping as well.
Leg is really sore this morning, hopefully it will ease off during the day, 6 miles planned for this evening.

Have a good Tuesday everyone.

Mitchy1nge · 27/01/2015 09:43

yes happy Tuesday everyone

will prob do 5 or 6 tonight at running club, left calf is incredibly tender and feels a lot like the right one did when it started falling apart Confused hopefully it will just sort of adapt if it gets plenty of rest and the runs are easy?

OP posts:
isittheweekendyet · 27/01/2015 16:40

Happy Tuesday! Hope any runs go well.

Rest day for me. The plan says to do 4 miles tomorrow, 5 on Thurs and 10 at the weekend but dh is working all weekend so am considering doing the long run tomorrow as have a day off. This just messes with my OCD-ness of a long run having to be on a Sunday!!

leemur · 27/01/2015 21:43

Hope the legs are Ok Mitchy and Bafana.
I did 3 and a bit miles this evening - gentle fartlek. It was my first speedwork -like run for ages and I wanted to test my leg. It felt Ok but slow!
I am kind of planning to do a long run home from work tomorrow but nervous about the weather forecast. We're forecast a fair bit of snow so may not make it home! I can stop off at a train station if it gets too bad and get the train back. I think the forecast is for it to stay cold all weekend so I don't think there is much point in postponing it as it won't melt.

Happy running folks!

Mitchy1nge · 28/01/2015 12:28

it's incredibly sore, given how little actual running am even asking it to do

it's also the 'good' calf, so seems doubly unfair, have been crying about a bit this morning but doing a long one tomorrow and will just have to see how it goes

there's no point going back to the physiotherapist, the main treatment is Not Running but I do have some new calf sleeves which might support it a bit, and it might just adapt especially if I do keep to just one long run and one or two easy short ones which was my intention, but it's not my fault running is so moreish

OP posts:
isittheweekendyet · 28/01/2015 16:44

Hope the calf improves soon Mitchy. Have you tried using a foam roller? Painful but I've found any kind of massage helps loosen up my calfs when they're right.

Did my long run today - 10 miles in very windy conditions Shock Glad the long run is done for the week but my mind's well messed up doing that mid week and not the weekend!!

Mitchy1nge · 28/01/2015 16:56

argh no, really? surely not the bit that hurts?

I suppose I could try rolling around it, the sides maybe or my shin?

OP posts:
BafanaThesober · 28/01/2015 17:13

Foam roller is deeply painful, but certainly helps.
I have been foam rollering the sore leg morning and night, and the not sore leg nightly to try and sort it.
I also have a hockey ball to use on the pressure points in my glut.

My pHysio said - it's sheer bloody determination rather than any natural talent or ability that gets me round. And my body fights against every step at times!!
However - it is addictive, and I do love it.
6 miles last night with my club, and it felt fabulous.

Rest night tonight,

Mitchy1nge · 28/01/2015 17:17

am not rolling the bit that I think is strained, am sure that is a seriously bad idea!

will see how tomorrow's run goes, but I suspect I'll be crawling back to physiotherapist Confused

OP posts:
Mitchy1nge · 28/01/2015 18:51

am such a melodramatic wuss, foam roller would probably help but am taping it up for now like physio used to

hipsdontlieunfortunately · 28/01/2015 18:51

Really interested to hear how any of you manage with gels if you have IBS. I really struggle with my stomach sometimes and feeling nervous about gels reacting (especially on a long run!!) Anyone any tips?

I did 6 x 1k reps at a running club last night (my dp has been member for years and I've eventually been persuaded to go). Was really great running in a pack and definitely pushed me on to speed up. Any other tips on keeping yourself motivated? I dread training alone as end up taking it easier than I should.

BafanaThesober · 28/01/2015 19:42

I would be trying to "very gently" roll the area that is sore, otherwise you risk the area healing with the knots still there?? Or have I totally got that wrong?
Have just realised that my entire leg is now covered in bruises, oops, possibly a bit over effusive with the roller.

I haven't ever taken gels, also suffer from ibs, at the moment it's just hi 5, I will be interested in that too.

Am also rubbish at running by myself, I run with my club at least once a week, and then run with people from the running club on the other days, generally all my runs are with people, some people I push to run faster, and others challenge me, my best pal and I are running Paris together, so we do our long runs together at the weekend.

Mitchy1nge · 28/01/2015 19:54

when it happened before at no point did the physio recommend the foam roller, although to be fair I didn't ask - it was just a lot of ice and rest and KT tape and as it got better calf strengthening stuff and stretches, it took ages to heal

if it IS what it feels like it's a tear rather than a knot, there's some swelling, but I'm hopefully just panicking about nothing

OP posts:
BafanaThesober · 28/01/2015 20:36

Oh totally listen to the physio before me :-)
Taping and icing will no doubt be the best course of treatment for it.
A very lazy evening watching call the midwife. Got to love a rest day!!

Pleaseputyourshoeson · 28/01/2015 21:23

Don't massage over the injury with the roller, just around the injury. Ice the injured bit Mitchy.
Well my body feels wrecked. Recovering from last weeks long run seems to be harder than expected which leaves me wondering if my body can handle it. The muscles aren't sore but my knee and ankle bones are. One knee aches on the inside - limpy until warmed up and the other knee is itband-y and the front of the ankle is tight achy when running. I had a go at single leg calf raises and can see that my right leg is not able to do them because of my knee. Hmm. I'm icing away. And have tried to ice and foam roll and do hip/glute exercises all week. Taking ibuprofen. I've swum twice, done two boot camps and two short 5k runs this week. And long run again to come. I hope its all just 'adaptation' . And joyfully my new custom soles have given me long blisters on my arches. Aaaaargh. Depressed!!!

leemur · 28/01/2015 21:56

I'm a roller novice so have nothing useful to add!
That all sounds sore and frustrating pleaseputyourshoeson . Hope all your care pays off.

I managed my 11 mile long run this evening. We're under the amber snow warning but it wasn't too bad. The worst bits were where there was just slush. Once I got a bit higher it was snow which was better. My leg twinged a bit during the run but doesn't seem too bad now.

I'm debating whether to buy a running jacket. I usually just use a gillet as I'd get too hot in a full jacket but there have been a few times recently when it would have been good. Just debating whether it's worth the money for a few days a year!

LadyBlaBlah · 28/01/2015 23:16

Phew....that took every part of my being to get out tonight but I DID IT....8 miles and a sleet, driving hail and snow combo.

I get a slight perverse momentary intense pleasure in being the only runner out in those conditions like I'm super human or something. It obviously passes quite quickly and I'm reminded of my actual life Smile

I hope injuries of all clear up and let's pray for not too much snow....what will we do??

LadyBlaBlah · 28/01/2015 23:18

I have a proper nike running jacket leemur and I love it. Really love it.
It has gadgets and really keeps me warm, dry, cool all at once Smile
