How much exercise do you actually do?

That's it really. I think I've got in with the wrong crowd at my running club who all seem to workout 2 or more hours a day. Please tell me I'm not the only one not doing that.

I used to do at least an hour a day at the gym when I worked p/t.

Now I am f/t (but can work from home if I choose) and I do around 4 gym sessions including 2 spin classes.

Showy · 04/01/2015 10:50

I workout hard most days. At least 6 days out of 7. Sometimes don't exercise on a Saturday if we're busy. I do an hour minimum, no more than 90 minutes. I do plyometrics and high intensity intervals at home. I also run, climb, cycle and walk a lot. I lift weights 4x a week on top of this. Chuck in gardening, chasing after dc, running errands, housework etc and I'm pretty active. It makes me feel mentally well to stay as physically active as possible.

whimsicalname · 04/01/2015 11:56

Thank you all. I live in a very high achieving part of the US and whilst the running club I'm in is very welcoming of all, there's no group of women who were all college athletes so really very good. I shouldn't compare myself!

Fwiw, I run 25-30 miles a week and do a couple of hot yoga classes, bodypump, a spin class and a 1000 yard swim most weeks so I'm not a complete couch potato! And now I'm trying to summon strength to run 10 miles in freezing rain. Brrr.

I do five strength training my program that's written for me takes an hour. Then Hiit on the other two days. Also have dogs they are walked daily but I never have counted that as excercise also cycle to and from gym. I work part time evenings I hit the gym early 8am when my kids leave for school I head straight to the gym.

lljkk · 04/01/2015 17:10

those of you that do 2 hours/day type numbers, I'm very curious about your vital stats like resting heart rate, BMI, dress size, usual time to run a mile, cholesterol, etc. Anyone care to share?

Sirzy · 04/01/2015 18:31

My bmi is 27, dress size 10/12 and just over 10 min miles (just checked that on runkeeper and quite impressed with that I normally work in km so hadn't realised I was close to being into the 9 min miles!)

But that is down from BMI 42, dress size 20 and 15 min miles 18 months ago!

blueshoes · 04/01/2015 18:41

I work ft. My BMI is 19.4, dress size 6.

I do 45 min of zumba a week when I can fit it in. On work days, I walk briskly for a total of 50 mins a day as part of my daily commute to a fairly sedentary office job. I try to do 60 sit ups and 10 star jumps in the evenings before bed that will take me at most 2 minutes.

Mitchy1nge · 04/01/2015 18:58

my cholesterol is weirdly high, body fat weirdly low (technically 'underfat'), a single mile I can do in about 8 minutes which is not that impressive all other things considered (my fitness, how long have been running etc) but Garmin says I average 6.2mph which is about 10:00, I wear clothes my lanky 15yo daughter has outgrown, resting heart rate under 50 but very safely above 40

Mitchy1nge · 04/01/2015 19:00

I don't often work hard for 2 consecutive hours or more each day, just little and often

Sirzy · 04/01/2015 19:03

Just checked my resting pulse and it is currently 68

Suzannewithaplan · 04/01/2015 19:09

RP mid 40's
bmi 19.2

Azquilith · 04/01/2015 19:09

I do nothing. Work FT then my toddler goes to bed about 8 then I work again. BMI about 21. Ah the days when I could do 2 hours exercise a day.

53Dragon · 04/01/2015 19:11

I'm 53, BMI 24.8, resting pulse 46. I used to do a lot more exercise but at the moment I usually do fairly full-on paddling sessions per week - one about an hour, the other 1hr 20. 1x 1 hour Circuits session focussing on core strength & stability, ride horse once or twice per week. Sometimes cycle, do other physical stuff like mucking out, walking around re: job etc. Always try to use the stairs.
Hate running so asked ds2 to buy me a skipping rope for Christmas. OMG... skipping - so much harder than running!

MewlingQuim · 04/01/2015 19:27

I would struggle to fit in 2 hours exercise a day now I have DD. Mostly due to the hassle of organising babysitters.

I used to do 5 martial arts classes a week. I also used to walk to work and back every day and walk the dog so probably about 10miles a day. I sometimes wonder where I found the time and energy

At the moment I do a 30 minute run, a yoga class and swim once a week each. I am a dress size UK8, BMI 20.

dancingwitch · 04/01/2015 19:33

Now I have DC and I spend 3hrs a day commuting on the 3 days I work & have a toddler with me on the days I don't, none. I was doing Zumba twice a week but that involved DP being home from work by 7.20pm which isn't really possible so I stopped that. I'm currently speaking to our cleaner to increase her hours with the specific aim of freeing up some time to exercise.

ISpyPlumPie · 04/01/2015 20:21

I'm another one responding for balance (saw this in Active, don't usually come on this board).

I don't do any formal exercise atm. The school run (about a mile each way) and general running about after DC is as active as I get. BMI is 22, dress size UK10, resting pulse etc unknown.

So far I've got away with it - never been overweight, haven't had a day off sick in a decade and got through pg and birth unscathed (although I know there are a huge no. of other factors, including downright luck, when it comes to this). I am however very aware that this won't continue and now I'm mid 30's I frankly need to sort myself out. I think if I do it in a dramatic new years resolution, complete change of routine then I'd be unlikely to keep it up but I am planning to try a few new things out and hopefully find something that sticks.

blueshoes · 04/01/2015 20:41

ISpy, I am now in my mid-forties. I got away with it until I hit 40 and then realised that if I carried on in the same way (eating what I like, little exercise), my weight was going to creep up.

I now eat less, but don't exercise much more due to children and ft work sucking much of the free time out of my life.

lljkk · 04/01/2015 20:41

Those resting pulse rates from the super fit are terrific (chart for comparison).
(Actually those RHRs are amazing since even the youngest athletes on that chart are higher).

I know I'll never join your ranks, but good adverts for value of cardiac fitness.

Mitchy1nge · 04/01/2015 21:10

I think some of us (me) are just old, it declines naturally with age doesn't it?

Showy · 04/01/2015 21:16

I am 34 with a BMI of exactly 20 and am a size 8 (but I have put on 6lbs of muscle in the last few months so my BMI probably doesn't give you an idea of my frame tbh. I am pretty muscular and not skinny). Resting heart rate is 53.

Sunbury1986 · 04/01/2015 21:25

To be fair to all... You can walk run or bike, or swim every day for 30 mins. Break it up or do it all at once. I'm not trying to spoil things but you Spend time online so swap it for moving. Xx

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/01/2015 22:39

Absolutely but all those require you to leave the house which, for most of us with small children in bed, simple isn't an option. In fact I'm going to start a new thread about at home exercise as it's something I really need to sort out but really dislike exercise DVDs!

iamthenewgirl · 04/01/2015 22:42

Two hours a day?!!! I take it that none of them work or work part-time?

Suzannewithaplan · 04/01/2015 22:46

re resting pulse, I think this is partly genetic/inherent, so some have naturally higher or lower pulses, although all will decline with increasing cardio vascular fitness.
Mine is on the low side even if I'm not doing much cardio.

afaik maximum heart rate declines with age (irrespective of fitness) but I dont think resting heart rate does

MollyAir · 04/01/2015 23:07

God, Sirzy, well done!
