Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Hiya coco, all runners welcome Smile
I'm having a day off today Brew

cinnamongreyhound · 19/02/2014 15:40

Welcome cocochops! I have a garmin 110w, it's basic- time, distance, pace and lap pace as well as a hrm. I wanted one that wasn't like a small computer on my wrist but like a watch, it does all I want but I know most of the other people I run with have more sophisticated garmins. This one is the one I have but this is the one I wanted! Couldn't find it in this colour for a decent price and didn't want a black one Blush

I've got the forerunner 10. Cheap and cheerful, does everything I need. I'm not sure what the extra features are on the 110, I think you can see more on the screen at one time but you can scroll the screen on the 10 while you are running so I've never found that a problem.

cinnamongreyhound · 19/02/2014 18:27

Me too Sirzy!!!

Mitchy1nge · 19/02/2014 18:33

I have the one in your link sirzy, am just getting to grips with it but so far am very impressed - you can switch the GPS off (if you are running on treadmill for example) and it will still give you a close enough idea of your pace and stride length and cadence even without a foot pod! Also it magically and automatically uploads to garmin connect without any effort

and it's all purple and nice

I also have a grubby FR10 in green for sale if anyone is interested

Mitchy1nge · 19/02/2014 18:36

that is a bit pricy on your amazon link though - I paid £180 and you can get the garmin hrm and strap much more cheaply than that combined price Shock

Sirzy · 19/02/2014 19:07

£180 sounds slightly more doable. Best get saving!

pay yourself by the mile Wink

MerryBuddha · 19/02/2014 23:50

I have the older version of this, had it for over 4 years and love it. Sometimes take a couple of minutes to locate at the beginning otherwise never had an issue with it. Won't buy a new one unless it stops working, as it does everything I need it to do.

Day off today, but planning 3 miles tomorrow.

Mitchy1nge · 19/02/2014 23:52

ohoh but on the new one the satellites are pre-cached somehow so it just goes INSTANTLY

which is a massive help if you run with other people

my other one took AGES sometimes

TwelveLeggedWalk · 20/02/2014 00:18

Anyone use a watch and Runkeeper?

cinnamongreyhound · 20/02/2014 07:45

Had a lovely early morning run this morning, although the dogs were a bit slow towards the end, may have worn them out this week!!! Was light about half way through too, yay!!!

Cocochops · 20/02/2014 08:27

Thanks for all the watch advice ordered the garmin 10. cinnamon you have made me feel guilty I was going to go for a run this morning but was so tired I didn't. Can't go tonight as dh is out so must be disciplined and go tomorrow am.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/02/2014 08:31

I almost always run with a friend in the mornings which helps with motivation and I have to walk the dogs anyway just a bit earlier get up!

EauRouge · 20/02/2014 09:14

Yes, the satellites can take a while sometimes on the 10 but there have only been a couple of occasions where it hasn't picked up by the end of my warm-up walk. Once it didn't pick up until I'd already run 1k. But mostly it's fine.

Coco, once you've got to grips with it there's a MN group on Garmin Connect if you want to join.

I haven't been for a run for a couple of days, DH has been away for work again. Hopefully I can go tomorrow and then again Sunday. Then it'll be an easy week before my HM.

Sirzy · 20/02/2014 11:03

2km in 14 mins this morning,

I can do the pace. I can do the distance. Now just need to get them both at the same time

OP posts:
Mitchy1nge · 20/02/2014 11:46

I can't see the MN group these days, or the MFP one, which is very annoying because I made them! The only group I can see on Garmin is some random one that I joined because they had a picture of a tiger Blush

they are doing big changes to the site so maybe that's it, but I miss seeing what everyone else is doing, it's a quietly helpful extra bit of motivation I think

EauRouge · 20/02/2014 12:27

They've been tinkering around with the site, haven't they.

I can see the group, but only my activities and yours, no one else's.

Mitchy1nge · 20/02/2014 12:38

maybe we are the only ones uploading our runs? I can't see anything at all :( maybe it will all reappear when the new site is launched?

EauRouge · 20/02/2014 13:12

I've forgotten who everyone else is.

ThursdayLast · 20/02/2014 13:47

Well done sirzy, you are motoring.
I just sneaked (snuck?) in an attempted 30 min 5k before my pasty lunch. I had the pace, but didn't quite run far enough before i turned back to make it a full 5k.
Never mind.
I just use apps on my iphone, nothing fancy, runkeeper at the mo.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/02/2014 14:52

How do you find the MN group on Garminconnect? I've tried to search but couldn't find it!

ThursdayLast · 20/02/2014 17:07

Ooooh DP just printed off my parkrun barcodes Grin
Can't go this week, but excited for next!
