Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Fab ThursdayLast, easily a sub 30 min 5k too :)

EATmum · 14/02/2014 19:19

Fab Thursday. Feel revolting today - smallest child has had vomiting bug (maybe one of the cats too - is that even possible?) and I've got a stinking cold. The weather is providing horizontal rain for our pleasure. How quickly will my ability to run fade away if I'm not out there?? Can't believe I'm actually missing it - the old me would have been delighted to have such a good excuse! Hope everyone else manages a brief dry spell for running this weekend. Smile

ThursdayLast · 14/02/2014 20:48

Thank you both, I was delighted!
EAT, as long as the enthusiasm is there I think it's all good. I presumed pregnancy would rid me of my fitness bug, but I found myself getting frustrated in the early days of summer last year when I couldn't go out because of the EMCS. A real eye opener.

I hope you (and your cat) and your LO feel better soon. There's so many horrible bugs going around at the mo Thanks

Fishandjam · 15/02/2014 18:38

Great work Thurs! I still haven't been out. Really not feeling quite the shilling at the mo - probably just tired due to wretched non sleeping children whom I'm tempted to sell to white slavers.

One pair of off-road shoes fit, hurrah! So no excuse now...

Get rid of 'em Fish. I often threaten to leave DS out for the gypsies Wink

I squeezed in a 56 min 6miler today. It was blue skies all morning and I felt it just would've been a waste not to go out, but of course it started hailing as soon as I got halfway up the hill out if the village Sad

I'm getting excited for the sport relief now, thankfully I've rustled up a free sponsors (thanks mum)

Fishandjam · 15/02/2014 20:17

It's been fairly bright here today, but blowing an absolute hooley. Part of what put me off going out! But if I can blag it, tomorrow I'll go for a run along the Delph and admire the floods.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/02/2014 20:24

Well done ThursdayLast! Our parkrunners where complaining about the wind today but we did get some pb's. I'm going tomorrow with a club mate for 10miles, maybe a bit more if I can persuade her :)

Fishandjam · 15/02/2014 20:26

At least your Parkrun's operational. Several near us are cancelled due to excess sogginess.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/02/2014 20:29

The park ranger came over to see me today as he was so surprised to see us! He said they almost closed the park because of the wind. It'd take a lot to get rid of us!! I had to move a few branches of the route but otherwise we were ok. Very sandy soil so doesn't get too muddy. A friend had a test about 20 miles away so did parkrun there and she said it was super muddy!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 15/02/2014 20:35

You are too good cinnamon Grin

I will do at least 10 tomorrow. There, I've said it now Grin

TwelveLeggedWalk · 15/02/2014 23:11

It's been over a week. I've had shin splints, PMT, work crisis, DH working away, storms, gales and floods.

I need a mahoosive kick up the backside to go out tomorrow or I am never going to get my mileage back up. I am actually starting to think I cannot do this.

TWELVELEGGEDWALK

YOU CAN DO THIS

Grin
OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/02/2014 08:08

Come on 12legs Smile

I am up, half dressed (running tights and pj top make a great look) and have had breakfast. It's dry and the wind appears to have dropped (hope I am not tempting fate). I've had a busy week too and have only done parkrun, despite all kinds of good intentions. Let's go together this morning and we can compare notes when we get back Smile.

EATmum · 16/02/2014 08:58

I'm out later today and need the same kick. Although if I don't run I'd have no excuse for not going swimming with the rest of the family which is pretty motivating. Sun is shining; that means it's warm out, right?

Snowdown · 16/02/2014 10:02

Sun is shining - the long run will be a beautiful thing today, come one twelve legs give it a go....getting out the door is the hardest bit.

EauRouge · 16/02/2014 10:14

Yay! Lovely weather for long run day. Although I'm tapering now so only planning 8 miles today.

Twelvelegs, this is going to be the only decent running day for weeks, get your shoes on and make the most of it! Even if you just do some walking intervals it'll be better than nowt.

Fishandjam · 16/02/2014 10:23

Can I have a kick up the bum too? My slot for running today will be after dark (DH has the DD nap slot for a bike ride) so I need extra encouragement!

twelve, a rubbish run of as little as 1k is better than none at all.

ThursdayLast · 16/02/2014 10:27

Kick up the bum for all!
You all inspired me this morning and the dog and I have just returned from 7.5miles in about 1hr15.

It's glorious out there Grin

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/02/2014 11:05

Wasn't it lovely out today! I did just over 11 miles in 2 hours, including a very muddy mile around a flooded meadow which slowed me down quite a lot.

I stopped at the 5 mile point for a drink and a gel and 2 dog walkers came past - one of them said "I though you'd stopped for a cigarette break" - hilarious or what eh?

cinnamongreyhound · 16/02/2014 12:15

Come on TwelveLeggedWalk, it's lovely out there!!

Sunday evening is a tough time for a run but you can do it Fishandjam!

I did 9.5, so not quite as far as I wanted but went with my clubmate and she wasn't up for more but it was gorgeous! Took my little dog and dh took the kids and big dog to work. We had a couple of stops but did it in 1hr 37 so not bad. Now need to shower but I have a warm little dog in my lap and Sunday brunch is on Grin

Snowdown · 16/02/2014 13:17

Went out and did 11km and a new PB, it feel incredible to be running in the sun again. Just what I need to pull me out of my mini rut!

EauRouge · 16/02/2014 13:53

I went out and did 14km, not very fast (1:31:04) but I'll be fast enough to get in under the time limit in my HM. Only 2 weeks to go so will be tapering now. I really need to make sure I stay hydrated over the next couple of weeks, I'm terrible for not drinking enough.

EATmum · 16/02/2014 14:35

Was a good day wasn't it? Did 12 miles, though the last was bursts of running with walking. As I'd not been out for a week, I figured that was ok. Then had to walk a mile home, so by my reckoning I did a Half today! Definitely helped to have sun on my face and other people out enjoying it too - even if they were mostly looking at the riverbanks that aren't and taking photos of the flooding! Hope everyone has had a good run so far, and good luck for later fish. Smile

TwelveLeggedWalk · 16/02/2014 16:19

Thanks all. Did 3.5 miles plus a bit of walking, and two near misses with aggressive dogs, so timing is a bit all over the shop but at least i got out!

Sirzy · 16/02/2014 18:27

I managed a mile yesterday in 11 minutes which I was happy with. Really need to fit in a long run but with half term no idea when!
