Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Just did 3 miles in grey, spitting with rain, 20 knot wind... And it was definitely the best of the day. Sigh.

cinnamongreyhound · 06/02/2014 18:01

Just presenting you with all the facts TwelveLeggedWalk Wink

I had my full length on today Sirzy as my 3/4 were in the washing and I was too warm. Don't wear my full lengths very often, although I did last year!!!

Had a lovely run with my friend and dogs this morning and it was nearly light when we got home, yay! It was dry here until almost 1 but been horrible since. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop raining!!!!!!!!!!!

Sirzy · 06/02/2014 18:18

I am hoping to get out for a run tomorrow, this week has been hectic so I have only managed one run - thankfully a good one.

Your smell will either be acid or alkaline - so to get rid of stinky kit run some white vinegar directly onto smelly bits, then put some in the conditioner section in your machine and wash using normal detergent, try this a few times if it doesn't improve then use bicarbonate of soda - make a paste and rub it in. I use bio powder on my kit - pricy stuff and some of it has been on the go for 5 years - it needs to be hardy - I wash it 2-3 times a week!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/02/2014 20:03

I managed a drizzly lunchtime run today. I am starting to fee less embarrassed about walking through my workplace in running gear Grin

EauRouge · 06/02/2014 20:20

The smell's caused by bacteria, isn't it? The bicarb would kill bacteria though so will give it a go if the tea tree doesn't work. I always used to use tea tree on cloth nappies but apparently my pits smell much worse than baby poo Grin

I haven't been for a run since my aborted attempt on Sunday. WIll try to get out tomorrow. I hate this weather.

Fishandjam · 06/02/2014 20:33

I do at least wash my kit without softener. But I don't have any really posh stuff; some ancient Ron Hill Tracksters and a couple of tops. If my proper running tops are dirty I use old hiking t-shirts, and they've taken everything I can throw at them for many years. I acknowledge that Napisan may be the Devil's work as far as the really rinky-dinky gear is concerned, but if it's the difference between getting some more miles out of a garment or chucking it, well just call me Lucifer. (I have mega stinky pits too.)

Fishandjam · 06/02/2014 20:40

PS wore my new trainers out and about today to bed them in a bit; I'm not a casual trainer wearer at all so I felt a little odd. But they are damn comfortable. Hopefully I'll get a chance tomorrow to try them out properly, assuming it's not raining horizontally and my stiff leg muscles have eased off a bit!

twelve, have a Brew and then a Wine for your stiff-upper-lipped 3 miles.

Finally managed to get out this week Smile
A fairly sedate 4.5miles in 46 minutes, with walking intervals. But the sun was shining, and I managed not to suffocate in spite of my sinuses feeling rotten and sneezing ferociously at least 10 times!
Lovely

Sirzy · 07/02/2014 13:33

4.5 miles in 46 minutes sounds great to me!

I have just done 3.6km in 27 mins but really couldn't get going today at all. First km was good (7.17min km) but the rest was awful

Glorious sunshine here. No childcare. Argh!

Sirzy · 07/02/2014 14:22

Oh no twelve, I hate it when that happens. I can't wait til DS is old enough to come for a run with me (hopefully he wants to!)

Fishandjam · 07/02/2014 14:25

Pah, I was going to come on here and boast about shaving 2 minutes off my 5k time, in my first run with the new trainers (35m 25 secs) but thursday's 7.2k (4.5 miles) in 46 minutes rather puts me in my place! Grin

Still.... 35.5 minutes! I am astonished. Takeaway for tea tonight, methinks. (Probably because I'll be knackered by then - it felt like a hard run, new trainers notwithstanding.)

Fishandjam · 07/02/2014 14:26

bummer twelve. Can you go out later?

Sirzy · 07/02/2014 14:29

Fantastic Fish, well done. Enjoy your takeaway!

Aaaaaah, don't compare yourself, a good time is only a good time for the individual!
(But thanks for the ego boost Smile)
I love that 'new kit' feeling, especially trainers, I'm sure it helps you fly!
I also hate those days where everyone is just too busy to get an hour to yourself too twelve.

EauRouge · 07/02/2014 14:40

35 mins, that's brilliant!

I managed to get out today and got a new 10k PB so pretty pleased.

Fishandjam · 07/02/2014 15:08

Ooh, well done eau! How fast?

My legs are beginning to send me a few "WTF?" messages so I think a hot bath and ibuprofen might be added to the schedule for tonight.

EauRouge · 07/02/2014 15:18

59.34, just squeaked in under an hour! I had this horrible vision that I would get 1.00.01 and sink to my knees, shaking my fists and shouting 'KHAAAAAN!'. But I'm already the village weirdo so it's probably a good thing that didn't happen.

Sirzy · 07/02/2014 15:46

Well done Eau!

cinnamongreyhound · 07/02/2014 18:24

Well done everyone! I agree with ThursdayLast, you can only compare to your own times not everyone else's. No point in my trying to keep up with my club mates, the fastest female is 5 years older than me and her best 5k time is 21mins! All I will do is feel defeated and probably injure myself if I try to do that but I know that I am slowly steadily improving and that's good enough for me. So well done on your 35min 5k Fishandjam, 2mins off a pb is 2 mins off a pb no matter who you are!!!!

EATmum · 07/02/2014 23:34

Frustrating run for me today. Only wanted to run 3 miles, but had to walk about 3 times in that period! Given that I ran 11 miles without a break on Sunday, I just find it baffling. Thought I'd conquered the inconsistency but clearly not.
In mitigation, I gave blood yesterday - so wasn't planning a long run today. But I think that 'being careful' mode meant that I just didn't engage with it all. Ah well - onwards. Long run planned for Sunday ... after Saturday night drinking cocktails with 3 of my best friends, what could possible go wrong

Sirzy · 08/02/2014 06:40

At leastyou managed to get out eat. Hopefully tomorrow is better!

I was going for an early run today. But listening to the wind and rain outside I may just stay in bed!

Gah, just managed 7.5 miles but it took a looooong time. It's v windy out there today, I extended my route in a direction I now know has lots of steep hills, I had to check my gps a few times to check where I was Confused
I just couldn't find my stride. Hey ho, still did it though and now in tend on sitting on my ass all day Smile

ThursdayLast · 08/02/2014 10:09

Oh and I was racked with the kind of sneezes that make you worry about your pelvic floor Shock!
