Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Hhhmmm, off to google gait analysis.
What's the betting I gave to go miles and miles for it.

Fishandjam · 05/02/2014 22:40

Let's hope it doesn't involve a train journey Thursday Sad

cinnamongreyhound · 05/02/2014 22:41

I think shoes make a bigger difference the further you run tbh and could well be your problem.

My first proper running shoes were saucony and I loved them. Only went for Nike for second pair as they were on the sale. I could do upto 8miles ish when I went but still didn't enjoy running on a treadmill in the shop about 20 times first in my old shoes, then in 3 pairs of new ones and a combination of one of each but only 30s at a time :)

My trails are brooks adrenaline ASR and I love them!

Get the f**k out of town!
Not only have I found somewhere I can get analysed, I found out that there is a park run much much MUCH closer to me than I realised!!!!!!
Yahooooooooooooooo!
Thank you guys. I mean, I know you didn't google it for me, but this thread is definitely keeping me enthusiastic and motivated.

I was so jealous of all you park runs too! This is great news! Now, who can I rope in with me...

Amen to that fish. Poor Dawlish.

EATmum · 05/02/2014 23:18

Definitely think my new purple shoes and the saw-me-coming-custom-insoles have made a big difference, but it only became an issue with longer distances. No more purple toenails, which is nice Smile
Having nice kit/shoes is really motivating I think. Although I do somehow have way too much pink (note to manufacturers: there

EATmum · 05/02/2014 23:19

Oops There are other colours. But I wear a horrible pink sleeveless jacket for its useful pockets and the fact that I can most certainly be seen. Running in the evening, I think that's crucial.

Fishandjam · 06/02/2014 08:08

EAT, I'm hoping to stop the purple toenails too. Not a good look!

Fishandjam · 06/02/2014 08:09

Thursday, great news about the closer Parkrun. How's the weather doing today?

EauRouge · 06/02/2014 08:15

I still get purple toenails even with my expensive shoes but I can always paint them. If they fall off I'll be annoyed!

MoreMile have lots of different colours, good prices too. Might have to treat myself if I can't get the stink out of my long sleeved top.

Fishandjam · 06/02/2014 08:16

I may regret asking this Eau but why does it stink?

Have you tried Napisan?

EauRouge · 06/02/2014 08:29

It's the sweat smell, I've washed it umpteen times but it won't come out. Yesterday I soaked it with some tea tree oil so hopefully that'll do the job. It's not so bad on my own but I'm going to start becoming really unpopular at parkrun if I don't sort it out Grin

Fishandjam · 06/02/2014 08:49

Ah yes, I know that smell. Tech fabric seems to hang onto it more than ordinary fabrics. Definitely try Napisan. Soak overnight then wash with a bit more.

I hadn't thought bootcamp on Tues was particularly tough but I'm bastarding sore today - fronts of thighs and backs of knees especially. DD is off nursery with runny bum (though fine in herself) so at least I'll have a mobile day rather than hunched over a desk.

ThursdayLast · 06/02/2014 09:20

Hmm, conditions down here are definitely favouring a Pilates class tonight over a run Grin
I've also discovered that sport relief are doing their run in about three easy locations for me, so I think I might use that as an introduction to races. If the weather ever let's me out again that is.

Sirzy · 06/02/2014 11:30

I am considering doing one of the sports relief 5k races too.

Ach, ,loving the trainer worship on this thread.

I was very sensible, I went to a running shop, I let the bloke gait anaylyse me, he gave me three pairs of shoes, the first pair I put on completely fixed my pronation issues, the second pair were cool but felt wierd on my feet, the third pair were gorgeous looking and comfy but neutral. I bought the first pair in a boring white/turquoise colour because that's what they had, and left.

I now keep peeking back to see if I can get my existing pair in a better colour... or the gorgeous new balance pair on special offer to give me a 'just in case' spare... You're supposed to rotate trainers, right? Grin

TwelveLeggedWalk · 06/02/2014 12:13

Oh, and on the kit thing - I've done a fair bit of work with Tech kit manufacturers (for another sport, not running, but the principles of base layers are the same) and I think most of them would faint if you put Napisan on their kit! Have always been told to use non-bio only, and not fabric conditioner, to stop the technical fabrics degrading and to prolong breathability.

That won't help with the stink though - I think sticking them oustide in the sun is the only thing for that. So roll on July!

cinnamongreyhound · 06/02/2014 12:52

I have a purple toenail too, already lost it once and now it's really thick! Trails don't bother it but they have a more pointed toe iyswim.

I alternate my trainers definitely and having another pair is fab in this hideous weather!

EauRouge · 06/02/2014 13:05

We're all doing a Sports Relief race together but we're only doing the 1 mile one because the DDs are quite young (I'll probably end up carrying DD2 for most of it).

Thanks for the tips about the kit. Would putting it on a sunbed work? Shall I turn up at a tanning salon and book it in for a session?

TwelveLeggedWalk · 06/02/2014 13:31

OOh, are you convincing me Cinnamon?!

TwelveLeggedWalk · 06/02/2014 13:33

Ha ha Eau It might work. THe non-bio/no fabric conditioner ting might be bollocks... you never know. All it means is that i've always washed our tech kit really carefully, it has actually lasted well, and now I can't justify going out to buy new pretty things!

Maybe I should stick ours on a sunbed and then I can go bonkers in Sweaty Betty Grin

EauRouge · 06/02/2014 14:10

Mine's only a cheap Karrimoor one so I don't feel guilty about treating it badly in the hope of making it smell better.

I've just got some new Nike capris and they are soooo comfy. Such a good fit, way better than the cheapo ones I have now. And there's a pocket for my phone so I can go trail running without worrying too much about getting lost or falling in a ditch.

A new long sleeved top would look much better with them than the Karrimoor one...

Sirzy · 06/02/2014 15:30

Too cold for capris yet! Just for 2 pairs of proper running tights which are sooo comfy though

OP posts:
EauRouge · 06/02/2014 15:37

I've worn my full length tights once all winter and I was roasting. Don't think I'll wear them again unless the temperature goes below zero. I must be much hotter than you (temperature-wise, I mean Wink )

Sirzy · 06/02/2014 16:59

My legs always seem to end up cold for some reason!
