Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Loving that positive mental attitude, and wish I had it. I think "I've done 8 miles, but I still have to do more than half of that again and I'm near to total collapse" ...

EauRouge · 10/01/2014 17:58

What was your pace like for you? What's your fast 5k pace? I did a 5k the other day with an average 5.31p/km pace but my pace for the 9 miles I did last weekend was 6.36, so a heck of a lot slower.

Sirzy · 10/01/2014 18:03

They are great time eau and eat. I can run fast or I can run for more than 1km I can't do both!

Have to admit that I only work in miles. Am old! I'm averaging about ten and a half mins a mile. Which us ok. Gets pretty slow towards the end (basically just leaning forwards and working with momentum!)

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 10/01/2014 19:06

Sorry to hear about your back, fish. At least it is not going to stop you doing what you want (I hope).

Well done to everyone who has had a good run out - even those who didn't have the run they planned.

Eat, that is fab! I love the feeling of going further than ever before.

Ran Thursday before work - I always find that an early run really starts my day well, but unfortunately the way we have childcare arranged, I drop the kids off, so run after work. That's when it's really easy to sack it off!

A long run planned tomorrow - not sure when or where though: I have just realised that dd1 is going to a party on Sunday and I thought it was tomorrow and I would run while she was there. Now at more of a loose end but need to keep DCs organised for a bit while DH sorts the garden out. I hare the endless negotiation that comes with having very young children :(

Sirzy · 10/01/2014 19:09

I have just changed to miles on runkeeper to look what my pace is and i am just over a 13 minute mile at the moment.

Wow I'm really impressed with all your distances and times. I managed a 27 min run after I'd done the Tesco shop. Loaded the shopping in the boot then off I went. Killing 2 birds with 1 stone in my lunch hour Grin

Tiredemma · 10/01/2014 21:00

I've heard people say that if you can do 8 miles then you can do a half easily, because the race atmosphere gives you that extra boost. I'm not taking any chances though, I'm going for a 10 miler on Sunday.

This is quite true-

I did a 10k race in June 2012 whilst training for GNR Half Marathon- I then found a 10 mile race in the August. the 10 mile race was hard (harder than the GNR in my opinion) but once I knew I could run 10 miles- I knew I would get the extra 3 required for the GNR.

I thought I was going to die at mile 11 of GNR- but I obviously didnt. The atmosphere of the race gets you to the end.

Fishandjam · 10/01/2014 21:02

Well done to all on their distances and times. I am badly outclassed on this thread!

Argh, can't do Parkrun tomorrow (or indeed next Sat) - kids' party tomorrow and DH is off on his charity training day the following one. Will have to do an equivalent 5k on Sunday and have Runkeeper log my time. Poo!

EauRouge · 10/01/2014 21:30

Excellent, does that mean I can sleep in tomorrow? Grin

Finally picked a charity for my half marathon, I'm going to raise money for the Birth Trauma Association. Anyone got any fundraising tips?

Tiredemma · 10/01/2014 21:49

yeah-

sleep in- have a curry, get drunk!

EauRouge · 10/01/2014 22:17

I wish! I'll need the rest after being kept awake by DD2 all night, again. If those molars don't come through soon I am going to lose the last shred of sanity I have.

karatekimmi · 11/01/2014 08:03

Oops, my babysitter turned up so I could run, forgot to tell them, so I went sale shopping instead Grin

The other car has broken down now, so I won't be park running, I'll drop DH off at work and run round the lake there! A bit gutted I'll miss the park run though!

EATmum · 11/01/2014 10:27

Eau, hope you had a better night's sleep. I remember that phase and it's not pretty.
I too am thinking about nailing myself to some kind of mast by starting to fundraise for my half marathon. I've not so far because then I could back out without shaming myself publicly (which when I write it down sounds rather pathetic). I'm thinking that I'll raise funds for the clinics where I work (where we provide free osteopathic healthcare to people in need), but I'd also appreciate any fundraising ideas that anyone may have.

louwn · 11/01/2014 10:53

Coo I am training for a marathon and have a similar goal but same pace -10k in 50 mins which is also an 8 minute mile. When I run with blokes from work we do 4 miles in about 32:30 so about 8:08 min/mile. Am determined to get to the magical sub 32 though....then we'll start running further! My fastest 10k time was about 52 minutes so knocking a couple of minutes off doesn't sound particularly unrealistic, feels hard tho!

louwn · 11/01/2014 10:55

My other goal is to get a sub 2 hour half - thats at the beginning of april so we shall see. Just about to head out for a 10 mile run in a few minutes!

karatekimmi · 11/01/2014 12:26

I made DH get a taxi, so I managed my parkrun!! not a fast time, but that's my 3 runs this week done!

karatekimmi · 11/01/2014 12:26

... my 3 runs done for Jantastic. posted too soon!

ThursdayLast · 11/01/2014 16:05

I'm jealous of your park runs. My nearest is over an hour away Sad

However, I just did 6miles in an hour! Woohoo!

TwelveLeggedWalk · 11/01/2014 18:31

I'm in awe of an 8 min mile. I just did two and a half at 9.50, which is a personal best by a long eh, by Massively cheating - running down hill to th sea, along the seafront, then meeting up with dh so I don't have to do the slow uphill bit on my time! Grin
Will have to get back to hills tomorrow to make up for it...!

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 11/01/2014 20:25

Park runs sound good - well done, everyone. I'm lucky that we have one in our village. But I tend to do a long run on a Saturday so don't want to push myself on a short run or a short part of a longer run, so haven't done it yet. Have done a few lasted year in the city though.

Louwn, it sounds like you and I. Have some similar goals. Well, I'm definitely not in the darkest for an 8 min-mile race, but am doing a half in March and aim for sub2 hours. Ran that distance this morning, in 2:03:50 and have done it in 2:02 something a few weeks ago. But too lazy to do anything but easy runs at the moment, so not sure I'll break 2 hours :(

Hope everyone who's planning to run tomorrow has a good one :)

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 11/01/2014 20:26

Twelve, downhill is the new black!

CooEeeEldridge · 11/01/2014 22:05

Ooh twelve love how you just casually drop in how you can run on the beach?! Well jel!

I'm glad you have a random distance / time aim louwn, I also would like to be able to go a half in under 2 Hours, I just don't have the desire to enter one though...?! Have you got one planned in?

Is anyone doing jantastic? I wasn't going to bother due to tonsillitis, but if I can do an 8 tomorrow, I should catch up?

CooEeeEldridge · 11/01/2014 22:07

Sounds like you're doing fab elvis! Well done on today!

Sirzy · 12/01/2014 14:28

Another 3.5km done today, decided to wait until after the frost had gone before going out!
