Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

That is fabulous, twelve. Way to go!

I think that the thinking behind hill training is that you put the same amount of effort in running uphill as you do when on the flat, so you would naturally slow down. And also that if you have trained on hills you would be more confident racing on them...still not doing hills!

Well done twelve!
The weather and baby stuff has been against running today, so I did a home workout instead.

EATmum · 08/01/2014 18:25

Elvis I'm heading home now - bit disjointed as well as unglamorous! I run to the station then get the train to a stop about 4 miles from home, then run that bit. So I'm now 'glowing' on the train (think packed, commuters) and I forgot my headphones which is a disaster - a colleague has let me have some old ones of hers, but as well as making me look like a cyberman the volume is knackered so I can't listen to my audiobook. I have a suspicion that this won't be a day for record breaking ...!
Nb well done to everyone who has been out - however much I moan about it, I do feel so smug after. Smile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 08/01/2014 20:04

EAT you have inspired me. I was wondering how to fit some running in now I am back at work - I am out of the house from 7-7 - but I hadn't thought of running from the station to my office instead of taking the tube. Genius Grin. I will give it a try.

MrsShrek3 · 08/01/2014 22:40

hi all
ran for an hour yesterday, no clue how far. a few sprints and a few jogs thrown in the mix.
And ds1 beat me Blush Grin (never run with your athletics club trained teen?)

Fishandjam · 08/01/2014 22:44

Well done twelve!

Bad luck mrsshrek Grin

EATmum · 09/01/2014 09:38

OhOne, that's nice to hear!
I tried doing a faster run yesterday as I didn't have time for a distance run. I managed the first two miles at under 9 minutes a mile, and seriously thought I was going to collapse. How do people running so much faster than that keep going. I'm guessing they may be just a little (huge) bit fitter than me ...

CooEeeEldridge · 09/01/2014 14:00

Had one of those annoying runs today, couldn't finds rythm, laces came undon, tracker inexplicably didn't track, and then got bumped into by a car!!! Car shoots out of car park right in front of me so I go round the back, it then reversed into me!! Caught my bum (poor car) / hip really, no harm done and driver looked v shocked - good! I was Angry but no breath to moan so just Grin and carried on.

EauRouge · 09/01/2014 14:26

Bloody cars, I hate it when they just pull out like they own the road. Pedestrians have right of way! Sorry your run wasn't too good, better one next time.

I had one of those ones today where you just can't slow down, no matter how knackered you're getting and no matter how hard you try to set a sensible pace. Fortunately I was only planning on 5k and I managed to keep it up, so I got a new PB! 27.35. Pretty pleased.

karatekimmi · 09/01/2014 21:03

eau no I find it easy to slow down Grin sometimes when I realise it, I find I'm only a tiny bit faster than walking!!

Fishandjam · 09/01/2014 21:44

Well done on the PB eau!

[Shock] at your car interface cooeee. Glad you're ok though.

No running for me today as it's bootcamp at work on Thursdays. (And Tuesdays too but I missed it this week.) So 45 minutes of sprinting, lunges, squats, burpees, star jumps, sit-ups, push-ups, planks, V sits, kettle weight whanging and other excessive physical jerks. I will hurt tomorrow...

ThursdayLast · 09/01/2014 22:22

I'm with karate on that one eau, I don't think I've ever had a day where I can't slow down!
Lovely lovely Pilates class back on tonight, so I'm feeling all stretched out and limber for my no-excuses-f**k-the-weather run in the morning

ThursdayLast · 09/01/2014 22:22

And that boot camp sounds amazing

ThursdayLast · 10/01/2014 10:32

Checking in, 4.25 miles in 46mins but that was 3 intervals of ten mins running, the rest walking.
I use Adidas micoach on my iPhone, anyone else?
The run today was lush, hardly any wind, a must sitting in the valley making everything look pretty and some friendly dogs on the way Smile

Sirzy · 10/01/2014 11:04

3.5km done in 22 mins. Very happy with that :)

CooEeeEldridge · 10/01/2014 13:59

Well done Eau!

Did a steady (ie slow) 5 miles today, been very disjointed this week. Does anyone find that when they have worries it affects their running? Have some work stuff going on and it really seems to impact my running.

On the plus side I managed to avoid any car interfaces today Grin

CooEeeEldridge · 10/01/2014 14:00

I use run keeper on my iphone, find it v good, it also syncs with my fitness pal too.

Sirzy · 10/01/2014 14:00

I use run keeper too, didn't realise I could sync it with MFP though

TwelveLeggedWalk · 10/01/2014 14:02

I spent all day on my feet yesterday and got home at midnnight, so will aim to do a short easy run tonight.

Have just entered the Great South Run though. EEEK!

Fishandjam · 10/01/2014 14:33

I've just got home from the consultant re my back. According to the MRI, I have some degeneration in my lumbar vertebrae. (Boo!) And there's little medically that can be done. (Boo again!) But it's nothing sinister, is unlikely to spread, and I should go about my normal life with painkiller assistance where necessary. (Hurray!) And doing things like running won't make it worse - it's just bad luck in my genetic makeup. (Hurray again - I think!)

Parkrun tomorrow then.

EauRouge · 10/01/2014 15:00

Yay for the (sort of) good news! Ready to get muddy again tomorrow? Grin

karatekimmi · 10/01/2014 16:57

Wimped out of a run tonight and had a chicken burger and chips instead!! I will be doing the park run tomorrow, weather permitting, and there is a 10k fun run on Sunday I want to do, and I have my parents coming up to babysit.

karatekimmi · 10/01/2014 16:58

Oh and I use Adidas micoach too, I used to use their programmes, but just use free run to track my route and I like the run score!!

EATmum · 10/01/2014 17:19

I did an 8.5 mile run today in 1 hr 26 mins. Am pretty smug about this as it is my longest run ever - though if I'm ever going to achieve this half marathon they are going to have to get quite a bit longer yet! Now though I'm on the sofa shivering and feeling completely done in. I'm hogging the fan heater. Also strangely un-hungry (which I usually am ALL the time).

Sorry to hear about your back Fish. My back is mildly rubbish and has been forever, but I think it has been improved through running. My osteopath said about 2 years ago that I was seeing her for problems about every 6 months, and suggested some exercises to strengthen the muscles that might make a difference. I did the exercises (inconsistently and certainly not recently) and then took up running about 18 months ago. I have to say I assumed I'd be seeing my osteo a lot more after that, but actually I've not been back since. Though I could use some treatment on my calf muscles ...

EauRouge · 10/01/2014 17:34

Well done on the 8.5 miles, that's a bloody brilliant time as well. I've heard people say that if you can do 8 miles then you can do a half easily, because the race atmosphere gives you that extra boost. I'm not taking any chances though, I'm going for a 10 miler on Sunday.
