Anyone fancy starting couch to 5k on 26/8?

I've done virtually no exercise since I left school, I'm now 27 Blush. I weigh over 14 stone and I'm horribly unfit. I have family history of heart disease and high blood pressure, and I've finally realised I drastically need to do something to improve my health and fitness. DH is running his second London marathon next year, and tbh I find it embarrassing that A) I weigh more than him and B) he can run 26 miles, I'd struggle to run 26metres without being breathless.

I'm running in the evenings after DCs have gone to bed, I'll do Monday, Weds/Thurs then again on Saturday. Anyone fancy joining me?

I'm planning to do run 3 later this morning. Really didn't feel like it today, so came on here for inspiration - and it's worked. DS (11) is coming with me.

Morning :) Just back from W1 R3 along the beach with a full gale blowing against me. I actually missed the first run and walk segment because I couldn't hear the bloody app over the wind! Had to add a 60 sec run into my cooldown, just as I thought it was all over, aaaaagggghhh! :o

Neck is a little bit sore, probably partly because I had to hold my phone and look at the screen thanks to noise.

Good luck to other Sunday runners and everyone else - enjoy your rest day :o

Well done FunnyRunner and everyone else. I'm just back too - rewarding myself with a cup of coffee and a bit of Mumsnet. Impressed at you running into the wind and on the beach!

So today was W1R3 - found it much easier than last time, back wasn't as sore, the jogging almost looked like jogging (as opposed to the limp/shuffle I was doing before) and I got a bit further along the lane than last time. Week one done!

IWish - my 11 year old runs at a similar pace to me (he needs to get fitter too!) but I can imagine that two little ones would slow you down quite a lot.

Thanks all, I'll do run 3 tomorrow then start week 2 on Wednesday, I guess I won't be far behind.

Going to start wk2 today :-) fingers crossed for everyone...

Let us know how you find it gin.

Good luck to everyone starting wk2, and keep going those still on wk1.

I was feeling great, but having not run properly since weds my energy levels have slumped again. I've also joined the Christmas grooming thread in Style & Beauty, its the perfect time as its coinciding with starting exercise.

Week 2 run 1 done this evening Smile

No ds's and no local small boy accompanying me today!

I have noticed how the nights are drawing in and am glad that I got going last week - dark nights could easily have been my excuse for not starting!
I am going to have to invest in some more appropriate running clothes - it's getting chilly as well as dark.

I'm not sure that I understood Laura's tip to help with the breathing - breathe in for 4 steps with your left foot and out for 4 was beyond me! Trying to think about my breathing got me all muddled which is a shame as it's something that I'm sure I could improve on.

Wk2 R1 done - not as bad as I thought for the first few, but the last run had me properly puffing and huffing...

Hopefully Wednesday for me to run again, but I'm giving blood tomorrow so might postpone until Thursday.

I forgot to say that I overtook a learner driver Grin

Think they must have been on their first lesson and just learning the concept of clutch control (they were barely going at walking pace!) but nevertheless!!!!!

Oh the shame... Decided to have a nice bath and my legs went all wobbly. Had to get DH to help me out Hmm

Iwish, did the learner realise he was being overtaken?!?

Well done gin and iwish.

I've started wk1 again. After much umming and ahhing my mum has finally decided to start too, so I'm back at the beginning offering moral support. My knees are absolutely killing me, but tonight was the first time I've managed all of the running sections.

I hope you'll still have me even though I'm behind.

How's everyone getting on, any injuries or problems yet?

I've really messed my knees up, they're grinding when I bend down and so painful. DS told me off this morning for walking like a robot :o

I've got long term SI joint problems and it is achey today which isn't great.

I'm thinking that I might have to fork out on a new and decent pair of running shoes sooner rather than later. I was going to wait and see how I got on, but I don't want this to be my downfall so new shoes might be the key to being able to continue.

Other than that and slightly stiff hips (much less stiff this week) I'm getting on ok.

I won't be able to do week 2 run 2 until Thursday though as DH is out tonight and tomorrow.

Can I join? I really need to run again. Finished it last year but then lapsed.

Did week 5 day 1 today and it hurt but felt good. I know I am a bit aheaf but you are all shiny and new and the other group has been around a while.

Welcome HalleLouja Smile Week five already? Shock You can give us tips.

Well done gin and Iwish on starting week 2, and Seven for keeping going. I think it's fine to re-do week one - the main thing must be to get out regularly.

After a two-day rest, I've completed week 2 run 1 today. The first half was really difficult, but I got into my stride in the second half. DS started high school today and he was really nervous (and therefore so am I). Running helped take my mind off it for half an hour.

Hello all! Did wk2 run 1 yesterday and am rather achy today. It went pretty well though which is a relief as I was sort of dreading it. :)

I haven't really run all year but seem to be ok on the first run on week five. The 20 minute run isn't too bad.

Tips. The run keeper ap on both android and iPhone is great though seems to add extra mileage to my runs Grin

Get proper running shoes. I got my gait analysed. Sports direct is your friend. The running gear is great and cheap.

I do Pilates too and think that helps with strength.

If I can run anyone can. I never thought I would enjoy running but trust in the programme.

Well, I'm going out tonight for wk2r2 - and will be flying along on the news I may have a new job (subject to references - which should be good, I hope!). Interview was at 10, lasted 2 hours and they rang me about 2pm to ask if they could take up my references. In the industry I work in this is basically an offer if the references are good :-)

I will be buying some nice running shoes with my payrise (possibly not more per hour but 5 hours extra a week and £100 / month less petrol :-)

That's fantastic gin! Congratulations Smile

Thanks for the tips HalleLouja. I bought proper running shoes the last time I did C25K about five years ago. They probably need replacing now, but I can still tell the difference if I go out in different trainers.

I felt a right berk on the treadmill in the shop, but it was well worth it.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 04/09/2013 19:47

I'm thinking of getting new running shoes ASAP. I have 3 choices (I think)

  1. a shop where you walk on force plates for gait analysis

  2. a shop where they watch you run down the pavement and back a bit

  3. (I think) a shop with a treadmill where they watch you run.

All 3 have glowing testimonies on their websites but does anyone know which might be best?

I'm hoping to get out tonight for week 2 run 2 if DH isn't too late home - it could be my first dark run!

Iwish, sorry I have no idea which might be best. Let me know if you find out as I need some new shoes also. And a new sports bra. Made from girders, preferably... I am large of nork and my current one is very old, so is not a very good fit.

Good work gin. I've been out this evening and it did feel really sticky.

IWish - I don't know which is best, but I did the treadmill in the shop thing. The man took a video of my feet, and showed me how I was flexing my ankle sideways a bit. The trainers have been fab, and I'd definitely go back.

Week 2 run 2 done - my first run in the dark and my first run all on Tarmac.

I actually enjoyed it Shock

Prudence was it a chain running shop that you went to? If not, I don't suppose you happen to love in Cardiff do you?

Next run is planned for Friday - the weather forecast is for heavy rain so that'll be another first!
