Hi all, I'm back from hols (with four extra lbs-birthday chocolate and booze) and getting back into normal running. Good to see you are all hard at it, well done to all the people who have graduated or who have just got started.

I am trying to step up my distance gradually this month, so that I'm doing 45mins for my long run by the end of the month. I'm on 30-35mins just now, and have mentally signed up for a hilly 10k just before Christmas, and I'm aiming for under 1 hour.

I'm also going to step up to four runs a week, to see if that helps my endurance.

EeTraceyluv · 08/08/2013 17:45

Week. Six. Done.

watchingout · 08/08/2013 18:42

Well done EeTraceyluv!

Dingle - 3.2 miles > 5 km so you've done it!!

ThanksThanks

FoundAChopinLizt · 08/08/2013 21:15

Back from running class-9.3k in 55mins, was a lot of running around town which is quite hilly. It was a mixed ability class which spurred me on as there were some really fit runners there (including dd!). That's by far the longest and farthest I've ever done so really chuffed.

amigababy · 08/08/2013 22:15

fantastic Chopin that's really inspirational!

FoundAChopinLizt · 08/08/2013 22:32

Thanks Amiga! I still can't believe that a podcast can actually brainwash me into being a runner..Shock

CounselorTroi · 08/08/2013 23:37

can I join?

w6d3. Have had to do this over and over and over. Finally able to run 15 mins without stopping.

Rotten run tonight when 2 charming locals shook a can of coke, threw it out of a car and aimed it at me. Running shoes covered in coke. Why do men think this is ok? What is it about people in running gear that makes dickheads crawl out of the woodwork?

DramaAlpaca · 09/08/2013 00:42

Week 7 done & dusted!!! Only six more runs to graduation!! I won't get anywhere close to 5k, but I'll be happy to be able to run for 30 minutes.

CounselorTroi welcome to the thread - what a horrible thing to happen to you on your run. Hope you are OK.

Great to hear how everyone is getting on. We are all making such good progress. I love the support on this thread.

LauraPashley · 09/08/2013 07:46

Oh counselortrol Sad Sad that is rotten. Sweeping generalization time, but men can be total arseholes can't they. I hope it doesn't put you off.

I'm a beginner compared to most here, just did w3r3 last night, found it a thousand times easier than w3r1 but that is their cunning plan isn't it?! Wk4 will kill me all over again!

cinnamongreyhound · 09/08/2013 08:08

That's awful CounselorTroi, most trainers can be machine washed in a pillow case. It's not just men I think it's people, my friend has had a couple of bad experiences. I'm luck I've only had a few beeps from cars and nothing more. Probably makes people feel inadequate that you've got off your bum and they haven't Flowers

Glad to hear everyone plodding on, this thread moves so fast! I'm on holiday from work, supposed to go training weds but so wiped out from the zoo I didn't. Been feeling horribly nauseous on and off and felt really shite last night so didn't go again. Looks like parkrun for only my second run of the week :(

FoundAChopinLizt · 09/08/2013 08:17

When I was running last night, there was a man half in half out of the pub with a fag and a beer shouted 'you've got no life' at me.

I wonder how he worked that one out?

Seriously, getting fit does seem to wind some people up..Hmm

scarecrow22 · 09/08/2013 08:36

Counselor another person who is Shock and Angry at that story. Agree with sentiments about inadequacy Wink Please join us on thread where only cheers and encouragement are thrown (maybe pombears but I have never figured that out despite a year of full time MNetting) BTW you are at same.stage as me and just a run or two behind BakingTins, BIWI and DramaAlpaca Smile

CounselorTroi · 09/08/2013 08:42

You're all so nice.

BIWI · 09/08/2013 09:09

Thankfully I haven't (yet?) experienced anything like that, Counselor - but I do always worry, possibly irrationally, when I run past non-runners in the park - especially men on their own with large dogs!

wem · 09/08/2013 09:22

CounselorTroi, how awful Angry. I've never had anything like that either, I suppose an advantage of going out at 6am when the only other people around are dog walkers and other runners.

I'm happy today because after a tough week when I seemed to hit a wall and for the first time couldn't keep up with the plan, I tried week 8 run 2 and managed the whole 28 mins :) Worked it out on mapmyrun afterwards and covered 3.76km, not including warm up/cool down. So not particularly quick, but keeping the same pace as on shorter runs which I'm pleased with. Still got quite a way to go for a 5km run though, I'm going to run out of podcasts!

EeTraceyluv · 09/08/2013 09:23

I always think people must be thinking I'm either a bit mad or horribly superior when I'm running but I always smile in a 'blimey what am I doing eh?' way at those I wobble past Grin

watchingout · 09/08/2013 12:01

I get a regular toot from a neighbour as he drives to work and the other day I saw him to talk to, whilst on warm up walk. He said " it's obviously working" Blush which was lovely to hear even though he is plainly blind as a bat I think negative words/actions could spur me on more in a "screw you" kind of way

cinnamongreyhound · 09/08/2013 16:35

Quite :( that you feel people think you're superior for going for a run.

Had a fab day today and actually feel I could run when we're home but not sure I'd be able to parkrun if I do. I've done Friday am and sat am but not fri PM and sat am, hmmmmmm decisions decisions!

OP posts:
EeTraceyluv · 09/08/2013 17:03

Maybe superior is the wrong word - I think they may be looking at me going 'get her - bloody fitness types' Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 09/08/2013 18:05

No I think it is right just sad that you feel that way because you're doing something for yourself. I'm sure there are people who will think that of runners. Someone from my club said that only 10% of the populations do regular exercise so we're in the top 10% fittest people Grin

I had a good run just now. Second one of my 10K programme, but was still only 5K. I noticed its supposed to be 4 runs a week now though!

Two things I found motivating this evening. I did. Completely different route, which was a circular one. Ended on a steep uphill climb, but I'd planned that to be the walking cool down. It was just interesting doing a different route I suppose. Secondly, this programme goes by distance, not time, and I found it more motivating in that if I want to finish sooner, I have to try harder! When I was going by time, I felt like it didn't matter how fast I ran, I'd still have to 'do the time'.

Probably nobody else has stupid thoughts like these, but definitely an improvement for me.

I still can't do a parkrun tomorrow! It's the only time we can get to Ikea to order our new kitchen. Next week maybe?

hairtwiddler · 09/08/2013 20:23

Hello all! Welcome newbies! I am coming to you from a few days in fabulous whitby. Packed my running gear with plans to run along the coast but have come down with a mistake cold and am just a river of snot. It hasn't stopped me scoffing fish and chips mind Wink. Hoping to get a few runs in before we go on holiday next week. But at the moment I'm in no fit state. You are all doing brilliantly, fab to hear all the progress.

hairtwiddler · 09/08/2013 20:24

Miserable cold. It wasn't a mistake, although not deliberate either!

cinnamongreyhound · 09/08/2013 21:18

Get well soon hairtwiddler!

I went and did my 6.5Km route with the dog, first one with him off the lead and he was good. Chased a deer right near the end but didn't go too far away!
