My local.parkrun has about 400 runners as well. I couldnt go the last two weeks due to do working and a bday party but planning to go next saturday, ds2 wants to come along, he is 10, nearly 11 do i have to register him or can he just come along?

cinnamongreyhound · 05/05/2013 20:56

If he wants a time then you need to register him and print his barcode 5madthings. Juniors get a t-shirt after only 10 runs so worth registering him :) but he can run without and will be marked as unknown in results table.

DONE IT Grin Not the whole lot yet, just W5R3 and I did twentyone minutes! I am now as far as I have ever got with the plan and this time I don't have any ankle pain, foot pain or a baby brewing. So I am on course for w6r1 on tuesday. GrinGrinGrin

Hi wizzler welcome and GO FOR IT! Most of us on here would previously have described ourselves as non-runners. (some, including me still do) I run on a night when my 2 are in bed. And yes, you now have to do it cos you have written it down! Smile The other option is frighten yourself into carrying on by signing up for a 5k run like race for life.

5madthings · 05/05/2013 21:49

I made myself do it as in a moment of madness I signed up for the link ndon bupa 10k to run as part of the woollyhugs team, I couldn't let them down so it gave me the kick up the backside I needed.

5madthings · 05/05/2013 21:50

The London bupa 10k that should say...

jchocchip · 05/05/2013 23:33

Well done 5madthings. I will do a 10k soon. 10yr old should be fine at parkrun but have to supervise under 11s - supposed to have an adult nearby. We have a lot of children running, I know, quite a lot of them lap me Grin Need to sort foot out, its not too bad after 5k but think it would be worse with running further. Will go out jogging tomorrow because of the bank holiday but will cycle/swim/ eliptical the rest of the week to give it a rest...

jchocchip · 05/05/2013 23:36

Oh massive belated congratulations to cheerup for graduating (sorry missed post earlier)

pennygallops · 06/05/2013 00:43

5madthings I would register him. Children only have to do 10 runs and they get a free T-shirt. Mine wears his with pride! I ran with my DS for the few weeks, then he felt confident to let me run a head of him and now he beats me week in, week out. Glad you had a better run.
Well done umbongo you're nearly there now!
And another belated congratulations from me too cheerup
Well I'm going to try 12k in 75 mins tomorrow - just because...

JH1967 · 06/05/2013 07:10

Welcome wizzler and go for it! I,ve just come back from W5R1 and am on a high Grin
I'm just thinking about 5k atm, but never say never....

cinnamongreyhound · 06/05/2013 07:55

Well done UmBongo, that's great! You're over half way now :)

Well done JH1967, glad you're enjoying it!

Morning girls

Just back from an early morning run, and it was lovely, sunny but not too hot and I really enjoyed it. Didn't enjoy it too much with a cold last week, so it felt really good to actually be enjoying it again! New PB too!

I run facing traffic. I usually stick to paths but mornings like this when its still so quiet it's nice to run on the road rather than up and down dropped curbs and some of the areas are semi rural and only have paths on one side anyway.

Well done on graduating, cheerup! Good luck with the 12k penny gallops, and glad to see your injury is getting better cinnamon. :)

Chopstheduck · 06/05/2013 08:23

Btw, how old are these children doing 5k? I started out running with dt1, but once it got to over 3k he couldn't really do it any more - he is just turned 8. I have promised to take him to the track for some speed running, but he'd love to be able to do a 5k with me. He is way faster than me over 1k distances but can't pace for longer.

pennygallops · 06/05/2013 08:57

Wow, chopstheduck your run sounds great. It's great to have a good one, isn't it?
chopstheduck at my local parkrun there was a little boy of 5 who completed the run in about 40mins on Saturday! My DD is 8, she completed her first run in 34 mins - did a bit of walking along the way. My DS is 10 and zooms round. It took my son a few weeks to get the pace right. I think they learn to breathe, pace themselves and run off a stitch.

CoteDAzur · 06/05/2013 09:21

May I join you? I'm an ex-graduate of C25K who was benched for over a year due to a hip injury. Now I'm slowly doing C25K again. I finished W5 yesterday, still pain-free Smile

BIWI · 06/05/2013 09:28

Just off for my last run - can't believe I will have completed C25K! I never, ever thought I would manage this.

Off now before it gets too hot ...

(And that's something I haven't imagined myself saying for a long time Grin)

BIWI · 06/05/2013 10:46

I did it! 5k in the 30 minutes!

pennygallops · 06/05/2013 11:30

Congratulations BIWI - you are now a graduate of C25K. Flowers
Welcome cotedazur, glad to hear you are pain free.

I have just got back from doing 12k, took just under 1 hour 20 mins. I have signed up to a local 10k race in September but I'm becoming tempted by a half-marathon (possibly next year).

BIWI · 06/05/2013 11:41

However, my C25K app seems to be stuck on Week 9/Run 1! This is what happens, isn't it? You get trapped in Week 9 forever Grin

jchocchip · 06/05/2013 12:04

Hip hip horray Flowers well done biwi :). You could download speed training or stamina next;) my earphones (nonstandard) are lost so more often than not I run without music these days. Maybe that's what I need to do...

pennygallops · 06/05/2013 12:08

I used the speed and stamina podcasts for a bit. Then my own music and just an extra km here and there to build up to 10k. But now I run without music, use my watch to set my pace. But if I'm going to keep increasing my distance, I may return to listening to music.

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 06/05/2013 12:35

Well done BIWI!! That's fantastic! I still can't do 5K in 30 minutes, takes me about 35 Blush Maybe that's because I'm an old fogey...

I stuck with the W9 podcast for a while but then moved on to the NHS stepping stone and the speed and stamina ones. Then I bought one from the audiofuel website which I found quite good. the only thing now I have found is that the village where I live isn't big enough and for a 40 minute run I have to do loops as I can get from one end to the other and back in about 30 min (and as I'm slow, you can see it's not very big!!)

cinnamongreyhound · 06/05/2013 16:44

Wow even earlier than me Chopstheduck, think I was going as you got back! Well done! It was getting warm by the end of my run.

Welcome CoteDAzur, glad to hear you're so far through and still pain free.

Fantastic BIWI!!!!!

Can you do a loop round rather than out and back SarahWithAFringeOnTop?

My run today was nice, didn't quite go as early as I planned but was still home about 9.15. I did 7k which is not bad and actually could have gone longer but we were going out. My leg hurt and I found if I didn't concentrate on my stride I limped but I kept up and below 6 min km throughout some of them down to 5m30 :) Feel I should be ok for my race in 2 weeks though.

I'm also still tempted by a half marathon pennygallops but having had this injury its made me more unsure about making the commitment. It would be July so not that far away really! Would like to be pain free before starting extra miles.

BIWI · 06/05/2013 17:49

Sarah - not sure about the old fogey bit, really, as I'm 53 ... Grin

5madthings · 06/05/2013 18:09

Are there specific apps to help you increase your pace? And how long does it take to see an improvement in pace?

biwi you are almost the same age as my mum Shock Grin

apatchylass · 06/05/2013 18:37

Hi

Can't believe how quickly you all seem to gain fitness - some of you are going from no running at all in Feb to 10Ks now; or losing 35lbs since Jan - wow! RFeally impressed and amazed. How do you all do this?

I'm in wk 3 and have had to scale down the regime as I can't run 3 mins without a break, so am doing 3 sets of 2 mins running, 2 mins walking instead of 2 sets of 3s.

I'm late forties and about 25lbs off my ideal weight and 10lbs overweight according to NHS. I also do a strenuous circuit training class and Zumba every week. Both leave me a bit breathless - I'm definitely the least fit in circuit training. Shouldn't be quite such slow progress, should it?

Also, eating 5-8 a day and drinking lots of water but still snacking on carbs all the time, especially when small things get me tense or down.

Had a lovely run today in sunshine in the woods, and for the first time my legs felt tired before my breath gave out, so I guess that's progress, but I panted like a dog for the whole thing, even the walks.

Any advice?
