Hi all, glad every one is getting on so well.
finished W4R2 this morning and went really well, no trouble like Monday, so it really is all in the head :)

cinnamongreyhound · 01/05/2013 13:10

That's great JH1967 :)

Wk 2 r 3 done today :) I have done three days in a row because of work and having a bit of extra time but i feel ok with it , rest day tomorrow I think .

I am already getting scared at the idea of 20 mins running , long long way to go yet .

BIWI · 01/05/2013 15:25

I managed my run today! According to mapmyrun I did 4.85k in 30.42 seconds, with an average pace of 6.20. I calculate that I should therefore be able to run 5k in 31 minutes, which I'm really pleased about.

I'm stretching like mad to stave off the shin pains, so fingers crossed that works.

Only one more run and I've finished the C25K. I'm amazed. Shock

BIWI · 01/05/2013 15:26

Sorry. I didn't, of course, run that fast. 4.85k in 30.42 minutes! Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 01/05/2013 17:30

BIWI when I decided to carry on running past 30mins to get to 5k I then decided to go until I got home, I went into some trees and when I came out the other side according to runkeeper I had run to a nearby village and back! My total 37min run covered 16 Km!! Not quite as silly as your 30.42secs but close Grin. Well done on getting to the end, do you have any plans when you finish?

Hello all , I need some advice about pace . I seem to have got s bit obsessed about doing a little bit more every time .
Because its the treadmill it is too easy to keep looking at the pace and distance .

I am walking at 4mph and running between 5.5 and 6 . Does this sound about right to everyone or too slow / quick ?

Patosshades · 01/05/2013 19:21

I decided to jump in and have a go. I started this morning but I think I need to learn a bit about pacing, by the time I got to my 4th run I was dizzy and feeling ill. Not a great start. Do you all eat before you go running?

Chopstheduck · 01/05/2013 20:29

I walk at 4mph but only run at about 5.4 mph. That is a 35 minute 5k. I think to do it in 30 mins, you need to be running more like 6.2 mph. So really that is pretty good going. As long as you aren't causing a lot of pain or aching, I'd say go for it!

Patosshades, I don't run well at all with food in my stomach, so prefer to leave it a couple of hours. We're you hydrated enough?

BIWI · 01/05/2013 20:52

Patosshades - I prefer to run fasted.

BIWI · 01/05/2013 20:53

cinnamon - I'm not really sure! I'm mainly concerned at the moment about keeping injury-free and avoiding shin splints. I'm not bothered about running longer than 5K - mainly because of the amount of time it's going to take. So I suppose in the short term, it's seeing if I can improve my time. I'm not doing the race (for Woolly Hugs) until October so I have got plenty of time to build up my pace.

UmBongo · 01/05/2013 21:23

Patosshades I have my tea, put the children in bed, wait for dh to appear and then go out about 1.5hrs after my tea. I don't do very well if I try and go out without food. Pre-children I used to cycle quite a bit and if I went out for a day ride in the morning I would have to have a big breakfast (scrambled eggs and beans and toast if I remember rightly!) Or I couldn't carry on!

SilentLurker · 01/05/2013 22:57

I managed a 6k in 36mins! Really delighted. Think I need to be well hydrated with a very empty stomach and having just eaten something hugely sugary. I'm away this weekend and next I'm going to do my park run. Gulp. It's my first admission to anyone except my husband that I'm trying to run. Yikes!

SilentLurker · 01/05/2013 23:19

Travelling, I'm mainly treadmill too and find that I'm slower than on the road - average 9k ph compared to 10kph on roads. I've gone obsessed about pace and obsessed about duration at various points. Not found either really pushes me on. I tend to find that I run without really progressing for a few runs and then it leaps on and I run an extra k almost by accident or I speed up slightly.

cinnamongreyhound · 02/05/2013 07:05

Hi all didn't run yesterday, friend let me down and the had a huge row with dh and ended up running a few mins in tears so decided to go home!

That's a good pace travellingwillbury, I run at about 6.5mph but its taken me a while to get there! If its comfortable then go with it! It may come down a bit when you do longer runs or you may just be a quick runner :)

I would also suggest checking your hydration patosshades as it does affect my running. I cannot run on an empty stomach, I was running only evenings so it didn't matter but now I go weekend mornings I set my alarm an hour before I go to have a piece of toast and Jam and cuppa. I generally try to leave an hour before running after eating but it doesn't usually bother me until past 30 mins if I don't but my dinners tend to be small.

Well done silentlurker that's great, parkrun with be no probs and most people will be in awe that you run if they don't already know!

jchocchip · 02/05/2013 08:05

My advice for beginning parkrun is to put a slow run in the first time then you will get a pb the next time! I nearly killed myself running too fast the first time - it felt really good but I struggled to improve on that for ages. I decided that trying to knock 5 or 10 seconds off each week is the way to go for me. No way is knocking a minute at a time off sustainable..

Oopla · 02/05/2013 13:10

Bloody runkeeper decided to freak out on me lastnight so my first 25 minutes walking/running ended up being wiped. Stayed out longer to sort of compensate.

Was lapped by loads of real runners and shouted at by some yoofs driving by. Still- felt GREAT when I rounded the corner home.

Feeling big aches in the muscles down the front of my thighs. Is this the burn? Grin

travellingwilbury · 02/05/2013 14:51

Hi all , I hope you are having a better day today cinnamon and your dh has stopped being a plonk ( I assume it was all his fault ;) )

I have got a stinky cold , so I have had a rest today but I want to go again tomorrow , any advice ?

And just to annoy me a bit more , bloody lemsip has got calories in , how ridiculous is that ?

Patosshades · 02/05/2013 15:14

Thanks for the advice, going to try again in the morning.

BIWI · 02/05/2013 15:51

travellingwilbury - if you've got a temperature, it's not a good idea to exercise.

And no need for Lemsip - all it is, really, is paracetamol! Take some ordinary (and much cheaper) paracetamol, and that will bring any temperature down that you have.

travellingwilbury · 02/05/2013 16:16

Thank you biwi , I know its just paracetamol but it makes me feel better drinking hot lemsip wrapped in a blanket , saddo I know !

I will see what tomorrow brings , fingers crossed I will be all fixed .

BIWI · 02/05/2013 16:20

You are a marketing person's dream Grin

Hope you're feeling better.

BIWI · 02/05/2013 16:20

Sounds to me like an excuse for some hot lemon with whisky in it ...

Chopstheduck · 02/05/2013 16:47

travellingwilbury, I'm full of cold too. I took some cold and flu tablets to dry it up a bit, co-codamol for my shoulder/back and just went for it. It was a bit tough, too hot, and I went off road, where it is very hilly. I did feel better for it though.

I've realised though, running off road in the sun is even harder than in the bloody snow! My trainers are sliding on the gravel, some parts are sand, and others are dried up ridges which I nearly twisted an ankle on! I think I prefer the racecourse, but there are lots of races on atm, and I would be dodging the poncy picnics and horses some days Grin

5madthings · 02/05/2013 18:05

Is there any logic or reason for a bad run? I just got back from a 6km run, was planning on doing 8km but just felt crap. I have a niggly sore throat and have been feeling tired but running didnt feel physically like it was too much but i just didnt get into a good rythm and ended up with a stitcj, feeling a bit disappointed tbh but will maybe go for a short run tomorrow and then do a longet run on sunday.

Every now and then i have a crappy run and cant see any reason for it, odd.
