Come and join us if you're thinking about starting, have started or have finished and are loving running! Lots of support, advice and general cheering on for everyone. Find the old thread here.

Thanks all. No, haven't had gait analysis done. Where would I do that? Did W2 R1 tonight and similar problem with right shin. Not quite as bad as yesterday, but enough to spoil the run and make it difficult.

pennygallops · 16/04/2013 22:12

I think I've missed a few posts but lots of you seem to be getting out and about enjoying your running.

Well done sarahwithafringeontop - 6k is good going. I've started doing sit ups to try and tone my tummy. Legs and bum are looking ok in leggings - not too wobbly. Grin

I had a lovely run last night - not particularly fast or a great distance (about 5.5k). I went out about 8pm, it was still light and the sun was just beginning to set. The temperature was positively mild and only a slight breeze. Just right for running.

cinnamongreyhound · 16/04/2013 22:28

That's great fromheretomaternity!

Well done SarahWithAFringeOnTop, increasing distance is good and part of increasing speed too I believe.

I run in the forest when it's light in the evenings Shewhojuggles, I don't think surface will make a difference it's just the extra weight I put on it I think. When I stand on one leg (to put trousers on etc, not because I'm weird and stand on one leg often!) it hurts and I guess it's because running has one foot on the floor at a time whereas walking you have both on the floor at once.

Loving the weather too pennygallops, I went in short sleeves last night and will be getting my 3/4 leggings out tomorrow I think Grin

Shewhojuggles - you shouldn't be trying to strike with your heel first. You should be aiming to land lightly, but on the ball of your foot.

BIWI · 16/04/2013 23:25

Look:

"So, no matter WHAT kind of shoe you?re wearing (which I?ll cover next), it?s important to stop stomping your heel into the ground, and instead focus on having your foot strike the ground more towards the middle/ball of your foot. Shorter strides, bent legs that are underneath you rather than fully extended out in front of you on impact, standing straight up, arms pumping, and trying to lightly bounce off the ground without your heel coming into contact with the ground."

Did week 3 run 2 this morning. Could have quite easily have stayed in bed, but persevered and felt better for doing so. Yay!
Glad you're getting out a bit cinnamon probably best to take it slow, you don't want to do more damage.

Shewhojuggles · 17/04/2013 15:13

Thanks BIWI. I think i must have misunderstood, i have been listening to the NHS C25K podcast and i though Laura said strike with the heel first. Going for W2R3 tonight so will listen a bit more carefully!

BIWI · 17/04/2013 15:40

I don't use the NHS podcast, so can't help on that one!

But my osteopath also told me the same thing about not striking with your heel, so I'm presuming that it's good advice.

racingheart · 17/04/2013 20:39

Hi,
hope you don't mind a newcomer joining in, but I've just started C25K this week with DC. DS1 and I love it, but DS2, who is quite sedentary and unfit, really hates it. I don't really know what to do (posted a long post earlier but not sure if it'll put people off. I don't want him to hate sport and running, but also realise that he is unlikely to have much motivation until he feels fitter and stronger, so he might need me to nudge him along until that day.
Any tips from C25K runners would be very welcome.

(By the way, on the where to strike your foot, I've been running in those barefoot style trainers, the ones with the curved soles, and they are so comfortable, as they hit the ground in the middle of your foot and rock it forward.)

UmBongo · 17/04/2013 20:50

W3R1 done. I have been trying to concentrate on where my leg and the ground were meeting, I think I land quite flat, I tried landing on the ball of my foot but it felt really odd.

I say, though, it is just a tad breezy out there. Hmm I am glad I kicked myself to go out, but I didn't want to!

cinnamongreyhound · 17/04/2013 20:55

Well done for going out JH1967!

Laura does say strike with your heel Shewhojuggles, you're not imagining it Wink

Welcome racingheart, sometimes children need a gentle nudge but it could be that running isn't his thing. My ds1 doesn't want to go to gymnastics every week but he comes out every week telling me how awesome it is and is getting better and better. He loves his bike but won't go far! Give it a few weeks and he may become a bit more positive about it :)

I went to my handicapped 5k but started and couldnt carry on. Ran for 10 mins there and most of way back so definitely an improvement but still painful. Monday 13 mins, today 23 with a little gap in the middle!

Morning peeps glad to hear the injury is improving cinnamon. Very windy here...

cinnamongreyhound · 18/04/2013 07:29

We've got the wind now, got really windy overnight. Beautiful sunshine this morning though :)

Sore this morning so may have done too much, getting better as I'm moving around though, phew!

OP posts:
SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 18/04/2013 20:39

Windy here too but not as much as last night when it was blowing a hooley! Went out for a quick run this evening - wasn't sure how much I could manage as I've been fasting today, but forgot to worry about being knackered as I was keeping one eye on a very large black cloud! Was sure I was going to get soaked but somehow it went away and missed me (phew).
Glad to hear things are getting better cinnamon

dementedma · 18/04/2013 20:53

Tried another run but bloody shin and calf pain wrecked it again.getting fed up. Got good trainers and running slowly for very brief spells but still in agony.

yetanotherworry · 18/04/2013 21:11

I'm thinking of joining this thread after having done my first run this morning (w1r1). It was lovely running out in the sunshine and wind. I plotted my route when I got back and discovered I'd run about 3.5km so was very pleased and then remembered that this distance included warm up/cool down walks and 90s rest periods :)

pennygallops · 19/04/2013 20:15

Come and join us yetanotherworry, we're supportive, friendly and some people are very informative.

I've been for a run tonight, early evening with my DS. It was warm and sunny! I even had to take off my long sleeved top and just wear my vest. My DS was feeling a bit tired so we only did 4.5k in about 35mins. Slow and steady. But it was nice.

We are marshalling tomorrow at our local parkrun, hopefully cycling there. Grin

dementedma · 19/04/2013 20:26

W2R2 done and no shin pain. Wahey! Did an hour and 7k in total once the walking there and back was added in

pennygallops · 19/04/2013 21:09

Well done dementedma and yeah to no shin pain.

cinnamongreyhound · 19/04/2013 21:24

Welcome yetanotherworry!

Glad the shin pain is better dementedma, I know what it's like being in pain.

I'm timekeeper tomorrow pennygallops, lots of responsibility Confused but I fancied having a go. Going to try to run before or after, not see yet. Hoping to go for 30 mins solid, got a 10k in a few weeks and I was really hoping to do it sub 1hr before I injured myself :(

OP posts:
fromheretomaternity · 19/04/2013 21:41

Great stuff dementedma! 7k is a lot... don't overdo it!

I went out tonight for W3D3- enjoyed being out on such a lovely evening. Knee started to hurt - I remembered BIWI's advice partway through and tried to land more lightly, which I do think helped a bit.

I also downloaded Map My Run so I could look at my route afterwards and see how far I'd gone. (Not very far... 4.2k). It lets you see other people's routes as well - I spotted a nice one nearby I might try next time!

UmBongo · 19/04/2013 21:44

I hope you enjoy officiating tomorrow cinnamon. I have just done W3R2. I had to look back to wednesday on here to see if I was on R2 or 3! [daft as a brush emoticon] I did 5min instead of 3min at the end and tacked on another 2mins too. I felt really pleased with myself, but the main reason was that I accidentally ate 2 slices of lemon drizzle cake that a friend had made. (I was at her house - it would have been rude not too!)

The wind has died down here thank goodness. Pleased dementedma and cinnamon are on the mend.

squistle · 19/04/2013 21:58

Hi everyone Smile

Just started out on my 5k running adventure! I downloaded the zombies, run! app and I am really enjoying it so far. I'm on W1R3 and all I can say is that I can just about run a bath hehehe. Thank goodness for compeed blister patches! Look forward to catching up with you all Smile

pennygallops · 19/04/2013 22:50

Good luck with the time keeping cinnnamon and the running. My DS is looking forward to seeing the sub-20min runners in the morning. DD is even joining us - think she fancies the bike ride and the hot chocolate.
Welcome squistle the program really works and you'll be running 5k in no time.
Sounds like a good cake unbongo and well done with the extra bits of running.

jchocchip · 20/04/2013 08:03

Laura does say to strike with heel, I don't know if it is a beginners thing, but I do have a tendency to revert to heel strike as I slow down. Also still have pain in ball of left foot. Have remembered to slather on the ibruprofen gel today and I will try and avoid heel strikes this morning! Better get dresses and get to parkrun in time for a warm up!
