Anyone else training for a half marathon?

golemmings · 23/07/2012 22:25

I graduated from c25k earlier this year and ran my first 10 race in June. A friend has told me that I can do a half marathon in the autumn so I've signed up for one.

I'm a week into the training programme (using the rw one for 2:00-2:15 finishes) and I'm finding it really hard going.

Is there anybody else who is doing a half who wants to share moral support/abuse/highs/lows?

Good luck kiwi! Stick to the shady side and enjoy it!

After running with DH in Friday (he complained the pace was too uneven so I don't think it will be a regular occurence) I dipped out if yesterday's run but I'm off to do 10 miles this morning. Still trying to figure out a route. I have a 9 mile route so I either need to stick a random half mile spur in the middle or a loop of the village at ththe beginning or the end or come into the village via a stonking hill... I'm tempted to run the mile loop around the village to start then I know that when I leave the village I just have to redo last week's run.

Thanks! I am back from 10km. Not a fast course as it was nice - all off road, on tow path and round field - but very uneven and in places not even on a path, just grass. I knocked 1 min 20 off my PB which is Grin but missed out on sub-45 which I was aiming for by 13 seconds. Sad

Still I will just have to enter another one now Grin

KiwiPanda · 09/09/2012 10:44

Oh and lemmings I would definitely do the loop first so you know how close you are to home in those last few miles when it all hurts!

Lexilicious · 09/09/2012 11:05

I've just done 15k near my inlaws house - 1.52 but it did include some getting lost on unkept public footpaths along very brambly field edges.

was hot too. Feel really whacked and my knees are seriously complaining. Glad I have a good reason to tone it down those week to ease up before the race.

so... exactly 7 days from now, we'll be off on the downhill to the Tyne!

golemmings · 09/09/2012 11:16

Oh kiwi, how bloody frustrating. But well done on the pb.

I've done my 10miles. Averaged 9.30 min/mile which pleaSed me and I'm not totally dead. I could possibly kept that up for another 3mi under race conditions, bringing me close to a 2hr hm. Not sure my phone battery would last another half hour though which is annoying. I may have to think about a garmin for Christmas...

I've just entered another race. I may need some kind of addiction therapy :) It looked so good though! It's Cabbage Patch race which is fairly local to me. 10 miles and previous winners include Mo Farah GrinGrin

onedev · 09/09/2012 14:32

Sounds like you're all doing brilliantly today - well done!

humblebumble · 09/09/2012 16:14

Hi all,

Well done everyone, lots of good long runs.

I did a 10 mile run at an average pace of 9.42, I was trying to make sure I didn't run too fast. It even felt good running up the 3 hills. I felt I had lots left in the tank. The weather was perfect 20 degrees and blue skies. Very happy today.

Hello runners! It sounds like there's some great and speedy running going on.

I did a 10 miler this morning. I hadn't run for 2 weeks, and was jet lagged having just come back from the UK (I live in the US) but managed a chip time of 2 hours and a few seconds (I was aiming for 2 hours, but a loo stop robbed me of a couple of minutes). I was 1.59 and a few seconds for 10 miles on my Garmin so I'm happy.

My half is on 7 October - has crept up sooner than I realised. And I've just signed up for another half in January with a friend who needed something to train for.

humblebumble · 09/09/2012 18:20

neither which half are you doing in October? I'm doing the Staten Island one on the 7th.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 09/09/2012 18:48

humble - so am I! Do you live here too?

humblebumble · 09/09/2012 20:09

Yes, I do!! How fun. Small world. Do you do any of the NYRR runs? I am doing the 4 mile next Saturday. It will be my 9 for the 9+1. Then I am qualified for next years NYC marathon, gulp!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 09/09/2012 20:14

A small world indeed! And I'm a NYRR member Smile

I did the Bronx 10 mile this morning, which was my fourth of the five Borough series this year so I should be in for the NY half next year. And I'm volunteering at the Fifth Avenue mile for my 9+1. I mostly do the shorter Central Park runs (up to 10K), but DH and I have done the 5 borough series together this year.

humblebumble · 09/09/2012 20:36

It was a perfect day for the Bronx run. I got my +1 yesterday for handing out bib's to the runners. When did you pick up your number? Wouldn't it be weird if I was the one who gave you your number.
You'll qualify for the marathon next year too?
Most of my 9+1's have been the shorter runs as well. I signed up for the mile, but I have friends in town and I also really want to do a long training run that day and it would be too much to do both.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 09/09/2012 20:44

Grin DH picked up both our bibs on Friday.

I do qualify for the marathon, but sadly we are leaving the US in March.

So, how is your training for SI going? Today was my first time out in 2 weeks. DH has just been looking at the course and reading bits out like "hilly at mile 8" and "you pass the finish with a mile to go". Friends of mine did it last year and said how tough it was Shock.

humblebumble · 10/09/2012 01:21

neither are you heading back to the UK? and would you fly back for it?

My training seems to be going okay. I also didn't read up on SI Half before I signed up, I hear the 8 mile hill is quite big but the rest of it is okay. I have heard it isn't very pretty ... oh well ...

Lexilicious · 11/09/2012 20:09

Back in blighty... Smile ... It's still a bit hot this week. I just did a very pleasant evening 5k that (massive hubris alert) didn't tax me at all - splits either side of 7min/km. two more light runs on Thursday and Friday and then it's the race this Sunday! I am right now quite unexcited. Mostly because I am trying to ignore the fact I am not organised about travel etc. I know everything is booked that needs to be, but haven't actually read all the info.

Idocrazythings · 11/09/2012 20:37

Been a little sad to check in last few days…might have to withdraw from GNR been back to doctor now on a second course of antibiotics and he mentioned the "p" word (pneumonia). I wouldn't let him tell me I couldn't do it, but Im really not sure, today, if I will. I don't feel particularly sick just coughing. Going to have a 15min run tomorrow, see how I feel after that, then decide what to do SadSadSad

KiwiPanda · 11/09/2012 20:46

Oh Ido I'm so sorry. You must be really gutted after all the training that the prospect of pulling out looms. But remember that your health is most important thing and there are plenty of other races. If you do have to pull out then find another race fairly soon and enter it so you don't loose momentum too much and feel like it was all for nothing?

Huge sympathy though x

Lexilicious · 11/09/2012 20:59

Sorry to hear that Ido - you know you can defer your GNR place to next year don't you? It is not worth risking your health if pneumonia is a possibility right now. Not at all.

Idocrazythings · 11/09/2012 21:04

Thanks kiwi; that's what I'm really torn up about- and I'm asking myself if I do it (even just to participate have given up on my 2.20 goal) will I make my recovery time even longer and put myself out of action for weeks/months. Might try to get another opinion tomorrow as its not like I'm laid up in bed or anything.

humblebumble · 11/09/2012 23:24

Ido you poor thing. Please get a second opinion. I echo what the others have said, it is more important for your health to not run and to find something else that you can aim for in the next month or so. Just think by this time next year with all the running you will have under your belt you will probably be able to do it even faster than 2.20!

Lexi I also had a good run this morning. It was just 3 miles, but it felt great. I think after the long run at the weekend it was just what I needed.

onedev · 11/09/2012 23:59

Sorry to hear that Ido but I echo the others as your health is more important.

I'm away with work this week so not ideal prep for the GNR but hopefully should be ok.

Good luck to the rest of you. Smile

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 12/09/2012 03:13

Ido - sorry to hear that you are so poorly, and that you might miss your run. how disappointing, but as others have said your health is more important. Is there another run coming up you can do in a few months so you can set yourself a new goal?

humble - I'm still in 2 minds about coming back for the marathon. Mainly because I'm not sure whether I'll manage the training.

I was going to have a sofa evening, but DH dragged me out with him and I ended up running 5 miles. Central Park was heaving with runners this evening, most of whom ran past me Grin.
