Is it possible to get fit and hopefully toned at 33 ?

I'm overweight but I'm working at it. I have lost 1 stone so far, 2 more to go. I'm training for race for life with the app get running. When I'm not running, I'm doing some cross training and at least 2-3 times a week 30 days shred.

Anything else you could advise me to do ???

Well done on all your efforts and hard work. :)

To answer the question in your message title, I'm 48 and fairly fit with toned legs and arms... though my stomach is still work in progress!

I've never done the 30 day shred but from what I've read, doing that regularly should help a lot with general toning? Can you up the frequency at all?

For toning arms and shoulders try using some weights (tins of beans make a good starting weight), for legs do lunges, for stomach try planking.

I enjoy walking and cycling, (every day) I use the rowing machine at the gym and do some weights there (2 or 3 times a week) and if it's not a gym day I do a few exercises at home for arms, legs and stomach.

I am 32 and fit and toned.

I co Callanetics and it is the best way to get a toned body. I have been doing them for ten plus years and have a flat stomach and toned body.

Well done on all the hard work you have done so far! That is great, keep working it at, it is possible.

I got fit in my early 30s. I'd never exercised regularly before that but started regular kayaking training sessions at 32, completed 2endurance kayak races, started running, got to 10k... And then got pregnant. Twice. At 37 I'm picking it back up again. DS is 5mo, I have my first kayak race next week and I'm doing a 10k run un June. I'm paddling once a week and running 2-3 times a week and shred is sadly neglected down the side of the sofa.

33 seems a perfectly sensible age to start! Good luck and enjoy it!

lovesineffable · 26/03/2012 22:24

absolutely it is possible, whatever your age or current condition you can make improvements..and 33 is spring chicken age in my book!

BikeRunSki · 26/03/2012 22:27

I was fabulously fit and toned in my early thirties. I had DS at 37 and DD at 40 and it has all gone downhill from there.

lovesineffable · 26/03/2012 22:31

bikerun..please dont despair!
I know it's tricky with little ones, lack of time/sleep/energy etc but it is possible to turn things around, you can get back into the exercise habit later on when circumstances allow:)

BIWI · 26/03/2012 22:39

Well I'm 52 and have just started back at the gym! No reaon on earth at your age why you can't get fit

lovesineffable · 26/03/2012 23:09

yay Biwi! :)

ceeveebee · 26/03/2012 23:33

I got fit and toned when I was 33. Combination of running 4 miles 3 x week, powerplate 30 mins 3 x week, walking everywhere and watching calories. Lost 2 stone, went from a 12/14 to an 8 (am 5 ft 1) and was supertoned. Then got pregnant with twins and am starting all over again.....

BIWI · 27/03/2012 07:57

Yay indeed!

sherocks · 27/03/2012 08:23

Thank you all so much for sharing your experience ! It is really encouraging !! I stayed on the cross trainer yesterday for 30 minutes (its the first time) and then went swimming for 30 minutes.
Tonight I'm planning on running and doing the 30 days shred.

I put on 3 stones over the last 4 years due to depression, way to much alcohol and inactivity. I want to lose the weight and I want to look good !

Go sherocks!

AwkwardMary · 27/03/2012 08:32

Of course! I am 39 and have begun to diet a bit and to ride to school instead of car....it's been a week and I swear you can already see a difference!

sherocks · 27/03/2012 08:40

I'm really motivated, I'm also doing ww which helps a lot where the calories are concerned !

just stay focused until your new healthy habits become second nature, the longer you do it the less likely you are to slide back to your old ways!
Well thats how i see it anyhoo :)

Quodlibet · 27/03/2012 13:44

Brilliant achievements sherocks!

You might find that you get a motivational 'slump' - personally I find my exercise drive drops off when I have not been specific about what I want to achieve. Something I find really helps is to make diaried exercise plans (eg Week 1: Monday run, tues shred, weds swim etc) with workouts all blocked in, and then you're never reliant on doing what you 'feel' like doing, if you see what I mean. Also, put in some targets (eg 'run 5km by X date') as it feels really really good when you smash them.

sherocks · 27/03/2012 14:17

Hi quod,

I just did that ! Tonight is running and 30 days shred. I aim to be able to run 5 k by the 12 of may !!!

OP posts:
Quodlibet · 27/03/2012 14:36

Sherocks I reckon you'll be pleasantly shocked at your body's capacity to adapt to that target. I ran 5km for the first time in my life this year in Jan and am still really happy that I can do it. Impressed by running AND shred - my schedule is either/or!

sherocks · 27/03/2012 15:54

I hope so,I have treated so badly over the years ! I can now run for 45 seconds at 10 km/h when before it used to 7.3 max !!!

GinPalace · 27/03/2012 15:58

Sherocks - you can certainly achieve what you are aiming for - well done for making a difference already! You will be getting toned underneath the remaining weight you have targetted for loss, so just think of the remaining weight as falling off to reveal the toned muscles beneath - this is what it will be like if you keep going. Your gorgeous muscles are just hiding temporarily. Grin

GinPalace · 27/03/2012 16:00

My mum did a very similar thing in her 50's. She couldn't run slowly for 30 seconds when she started. She went on to compete in various veteran running comps and did the Amsterdam half marathon and she is a titch with tiny legs so if she can do it you certainly can. Grin

Pagwatch · 27/03/2012 16:05

I started a thread on here a few weeks ago about committing to training for the first time properly at 50. I am now down to 9 stone 6 and I have fucking awesome abs. I am going bikini shopping on Thursday.

Yay me
Yay Biwi

sherocks · 27/03/2012 16:17

Wow you are certainly giving me inspiration !!! It will be nice to see some muscle for a change !! I was never the sporty type more the lazy type but I'm really getting addicted to running/exercising. I love feeling sweaty !
